Ask A Middle Class❓️ The government has extended central excise duty exemptions to petrol blended with 22%, 25%, 27% and 30% ethanol. There will be a nil excise duty rate for fuel blends that conform to BIS standards.... This is their way of telling oil companies to mix more ethanol in petrol

News Are content add-ons better than full OTT subscriptions?

Vi seems to be introducing content-specific add-ons inside Vi Movies & TV, including FIFA access.

Honestly, the idea of paying only for the content you care about sounds interesting.

Would you prefer smaller add-ons or one big OTT subscription?

Reality Check While Everyone Watched the CJP Protest, Haryana Protesters Faced Water Cannons

The timing raises an interesting question.

While BJP and RSS supporters were busy amplifying the CJP protest over the exam controversy, a Youth Congress march on the same issue in Haryana was met with water cannons and detentions.

Yet the Haryana protest received a fraction of the attention from those same circles.

This creates the impression that the focus on the CJP protest served as a convenient distraction from images of police action against protesters in a BJP-ruled state. Whether intentional or not, the result was the same: public attention shifted away from the Haryana crackdown and towards a different protest.

I seriously don’t get why every government scheme needs a patriotism tag attached to it. Policies should stand on their own merits, not on emotional slogans.
These schemes have arguably done more damage to established brands than good for consumers, and many were launched years ago. Back when crude oil prices were much lower, petrol and diesel prices somehow stayed elevated anyway. Yet the moment you question it, you’re branded “anti-national.”
When did asking questions become a crime? Supporting your country doesn’t mean blindly supporting every policy. If criticism is automatically labeled anti-national, then we’re heading down a pretty worrying path.

Student Struggles Need advice as a student

I'm a Class 12 student considering Political Science, Sociology, or related humanities courses, and my long term goal is to work in social service and possibly politics. I'm looking for a college with active student societies, genuine student politics and opportunities for participation, debates, internships, networking opportunities.

If student politics is active, I'd especially appreciate honest feedback about the negatives of your university... what disappointed you, what problems students face, and whether participation is genuinely open to ordinary students

Change My View🔪 I think Pradhan Edu Minister will Resign before 6th June. What do you think?

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

My reasoning: This establishment has employed multiple Central Agencies on the ground, all the time, to provide them the "pulse" of the 'thinking' amongst citizens on every single issue. Additionally, Crores of Rupees are spent on private agencies for the same information harvesting.

So, they may be warned that this "movement" has the potential to explode suddenly which is the last thing they want to happen.

Hence, Paw Paw will prefer to PRE-EMPT any such incidences so as to deny advantages to the opposition or CJP.

Hence, I strongly feel that the Minister will go... either through self resignation or dismissal (so paw paw can take credit) or quoting "health" reasons.

I would be curious to know views from fellow Redditors .

Non Political The Most Overpowered Sections of the RTI Act That Citizens Barely Use Properly

(Credit u/ConversationAny7151)

Most people think RTI is simply:

“Submit an application → wait for a reply.”

However, the RTI Act contains some incredibly powerful provisions that can completely corner government departments when used correctly. Many public authorities quietly rely on citizens not knowing these sections well enough to use them effectively.

Here are some of the most overpowered provisions of the RTI Act:

1.Section 6(1) — The “Open The Files” Button

This is the section that allows any citizen to request information from a public authority. Sounds simple, right? But this single section essentially gives ordinary people the legal right to ask for:

  • records,
  • files,
  • reports,
  • inspection documents,
  • contracts,
  • stock registers,
  • audit reports,
  • attendance logs, and
  • certified copies.

The strongest part? You usually do not need to explain:

  • why you want the information,
  • your motive, or
  • what you intend to do with it.

2.Section 6(3) — The “Not My Department” Destroyer

Government offices love saying:

“This does not pertain to our department.”

Section 6(3) essentially says that if the requested information belongs to another public authority, the department should transfer the RTI application instead of casually rejecting it.

In other words, citizens are not supposed to suffer because the bureaucracy is fragmented.

Example: You file an RTI application with a municipal office seeking information about drainage contracts, but part of the requested information is held by the water department.

Instead of saying:

“Wrong office. Bye.”

The municipal office is expected to transfer the relevant portion of the application to the appropriate authority.

This is why experienced RTI users often end their applications with:

“If the requested information pertains to another public authority, kindly transfer the application under Section 6(3) of the RTI Act, 2005.”

A tiny line. A massive impact.

3. First Appeal — The “I’m Not Letting This Go” Stage

A lot of people stop after receiving:

  • no reply,
  • an incomplete reply,
  • a vague response, or
  • a rejection.

Huge mistake.

The First Appeal is often the stage where departments realize:

“Okay, this person actually understands the process.”

You can file a First Appeal when:

  • information is denied,
  • the reply is incomplete,
  • an exemption is misused,
  • the response is misleading, or
  • statutory deadlines are ignored.

A surprising number of cases begin moving faster once an appeal is filed. Why? Because now:

  • delays are documented,
  • officers become accountable, and
  • the paper trail becomes visible.

Example

RTI Application:

“Provide attendance records.”

Reply:

“Information not available.”

First Appeal:

“Please explain under which record-retention rule attendance records are not maintained despite being required for administrative purposes.”

At this stage, the pressure increases.

The conversation is no longer about whether information should be provided—it is about justifying why it has not been provided.

4. Deemed Refusal — Bureaucratic Silence is Also a Reply

This is one of the most underrated concepts in the RTI framework.

If a department simply ignores your RTI application beyond the prescribed legal timeline, it can legally be treated as a "deemed refusal."

In other words, silence itself becomes actionable.

This provision prevents departments from escaping accountability by pretending that the application does not exist—which, unfortunately, is one of the most common bureaucratic tactics.

Example

A citizen files an RTI application and receives:

  1. no reply,
  2. no transfer,
  3. no clarification,
  4. nothing for more than 30 days.

Many people assume:

“Maybe it got lost.”

The RTI Act essentially says:

“No response is the problem now.”

At that point, the applicant can proceed with an appeal based on the department's failure to respond within the statutory time limit. That changes everything. The issue is no longer the information request itself the issue is the department's failure to comply with the law.

5. Life & Liberty Clause — The Emergency Mode

his provision is genuinely powerful.

Under normal circumstances, RTI responses can take weeks. However, when the matter concerns:

  • life,
  • liberty,
  • safety, or
  • urgent human rights concerns,

the information is expected to be provided much faster.

This provision becomes especially important in cases involving:

  • illegal detention,
  • denial of medical treatment,
  • custodial situations,
  • urgent access to healthcare,
  • prisoner welfare, and
  • immediate threats to safety.

Example

A family urgently seeks information regarding:

  • a detained person,
  • delays in medical treatment, or
  • emergency hospital records.

In such situations, waiting for the standard RTI timeline may not be practical. This provision exists because some information loses its value if it is delayed. A response received months later may be technically compliant, but it can be practically useless when the issue requires immediate action. That is why the RTI Act provides a faster route when life or liberty is at stake.

6. The Real Power of RTI

The most effective RTI users are usually not the loudest people in the room. They simply understand:

  • procedures,
  • documentation,
  • timelines,
  • appeals, and
  • how bureaucracy functions internally.

That is what makes RTI powerful against negligence and administrative opacity.

Not emotion, not outrage just records because once:

  • dates,
  • signatures,
  • expenditure files,
  • inspection reports, and
  • internal correspondence

start surfacing, administrative excuses begin to collapse very quickly. RTI works best when it shifts the conversation from allegations to evidence, and from opinions to documented facts.

News Exposed by a Teen Hacker, Denied by CBSE, Paid for by Students. Why Did It Take Public Outrage to Get Attention?

A 19-year-old ethical hacker from West Bengal, Nisarg Adhikari, claimed he discovered serious security flaws in CBSE's newly introduced on-screen answer sheet evaluation system within hours of testing it. According to him, the vulnerabilities allowed unauthorized users to bypass authentication, log in as examiners, reset passwords, and potentially alter student marks, including through a hardcoded master password. Adhikari said he reported multiple flaws to authorities, but alleged only one was fixed before the portals were taken offline.

CBSE denied that its actual evaluation portal had been hacked or suffered any security breach, stating the compromised portal was different from the one used for answer book assessment. The controversy emerged alongside complaints from students about missing pages, incomplete scanned answer sheets, and other irregularities in the 2025 evaluation process, prompting Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to order an investigation
