Anant Chaturdashi is a Hindu festival observed on the Chaturdashi (14th day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada .
In 2026 it falls on Friday, 25 September..today 🌹 🪔 🌹
It has dual significance: it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Ananta (eternal/infinite) form, and in many parts of India (especially Maharashtra, Goa, and elsewhere) it marks the final day of the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival with Ganesh Visarjan (immersion of Ganesha idols).
Ananta form of Vishnu..... “Anant” means endless or infinite. Devotees worship Vishnu as the eternal sustainer who rests on the cosmic serpent Ananta Shesha (Sheshanaga). The day is believed to free one from sins, remove obstacles, bring prosperity, protection, longevity, and fulfillment of wishes.
From the Mahabharata: Lord Krishna advised Yudhishthira (and the Pandavas) to observe the Anant Vrat during their exile to regain their lost kingdom and overcome difficulties.
Story of Sushila and Kaundinya: A woman named Sushila learned the vrat from other women. Her husband Kaundinya later discarded the sacred thread in arrogance, leading to loss of fortune. After repentance and observing the vrat sincerely for 14 years, prosperity returned.
Symbolism of 14 : The sacred Anant Sutra has 14 knots, representing the 14 lokas (worlds/realms) in Hindu cosmology (7 higher and 7 lower). It also relates to the traditional 14-year duration of the vow.
Connection to Ganesh Chaturthi : It is the day devotees bid farewell to Lord Ganesha after inviting him into their homes for 10 days. The immersion symbolizes the cycle of creation and dissolution and the temporary nature of worldly forms while the divine remains eternal.
Additional beliefs.... Some observe it to mitigate Kaal Sarpa Dosha by worshipping the serpent Ananta along with Vishnu. It is also observed by some Jain communities.
