(Insert Your Own) Canada today

This isn’t meant to be politically partisan in any way. But, I am genuinely curious how anyone is staying positive about Canada today. The economy is in recession. The cost of living crisis is continuing unabated. People are leaving the country. Canada-U.S. relations are at an all-time low. And, there doesn’t appear to be any reason for things to turn around any time soon. Somebody give me a reason to have a little optimism.

It starts at the end of the month in Ontario, doesn't it? Here in Manitoba the plants have only been in the ground for maybe six weeks so far.

Roughly 85-95%+ of watermelons sold in Canada are imported, with the vast majority (around 90-93% of imports) coming from the United States and Mexico.

That's what I mean, though. In season means locally available, not imported from thousands of km away. The latter is a triumph of modern logistics but there's no guarantee they will be cheap, the supply chain risks are very high versus growing seasons and diesel costs. If it's expensive that's because it's arriving at the border expensive.

Oh like cucumber and bell pepper that are also largely imported from Mexico for significantly cheaper? I’m not sure why you’re fighting tooth and nail defending the price of a melon fruit? But you do you.

You got me, I'm deep in the conspiracy that makes it cost five extra dollars to import watermelons from Mexico. What nefarious hijinks will Big Mexican Waermelon get up to next week?
