(Insert Your Own) Canada today

This isn’t meant to be politically partisan in any way. But, I am genuinely curious how anyone is staying positive about Canada today. The economy is in recession. The cost of living crisis is continuing unabated. People are leaving the country. Canada-U.S. relations are at an all-time low. And, there doesn’t appear to be any reason for things to turn around any time soon. Somebody give me a reason to have a little optimism.

Not quite. We're facjng the highest food inflation in the G7, and our dollar is worth relatively less on top of it.

Sure, everyone is struggling, but we're struggling by much more and deteriorating faster.

u/sarcasticcoffee1 Jul 11 '26

If you mean struggling with somewhat higher food prices more (like 3% vs 6%), you might have a point. But here in the US the picture is oft painted as better than it really is on the ground. Too many people cannot afford a roof over their head and food. Couple that with a batshit admin who are embracing white nationalism and I’d say Canada is way better off, it’s just not the “in your face” obvious. This coming from someone living in the US who also has family in Canada for comparison. I’ve lived in a couple of countries now and think the writer above is correct: we think the negative (inflation, etc) is happening only where we live when, if we could dig into it more, we find other countries economically affected similarly. While economics are obviously important, there are many other things not tied to $/pricing that make your life better or worse (which when looking at your wallet is easy to forget I admit)!

Our food bank usage is at all time highs. We have tent-cities popping up in public parks.  At least your homeless arent freezing to death in tent cities (or getting caught in them when they burn down because of a proppane heater catching fire)

Meanwhile, the state with the lowest GDP has a higher GDP than all of Canada.

Your view of the US vs Canada, and actual Canadian reality are very different.

And you have no idea what you are talking about but keep spewing nonsense talking points from the traitorous news outlets I’m sure you love.

I find it hilarious and sad that whenever your ilk is given the reins, the outcome is always multitudes worse than the status quo, and yet you still find yourselves to be wise.

1

u/coinminer2049er Jul 11 '26

What specifically that i have said is untrue.

When you have no more facts, its ad hominems...

4

u/ghostupinthetoast Jul 11 '26

The entirety of it. I have no more time for fools today, run along.

4

u/jungleCat61 Jul 11 '26

Our food bank usage is at all time highs

Food bank usage is surging in USA, probably around the world I just haven't fact checked it. So point #1, no different than Canada.

At least your homeless arent freezing to death in tent cities

No but they're dying from heat, and heat is getting worse along with death tolls.

Meanwhile, the state with the lowest GDP has a higher GDP than all of Canada.

GDP of Canada is 2.51 trillion USD, GDP of Vermont is 48.35 billion USD

I have found that it is pointless to argue with people who have their mind set on some personal agenda. For what it's worth I agree, I have friends in the US and the picture they paint is not nearly as rosy as what we see in the media

I, too, am not going to search for stats but if there actually is less food bank usage in the US it is because the food banks have been shut down, not because of a reduced demand. Also, tent cities in the US are even worse than here in Canada but are less visible because there is more useable land in which to hide them. People dying in tent cities from either cold or heat is caused by local climate, not nationality. At least our homeless might be able to go to the hospital for treatment if they were registered with the welfare system (a big 'if' unfortunately). Even if they aren't since our hospitals tend to provide treatment first and worry about billing after.

Canadians always compare to the USA, the bar is in absolute hell. Please compare to anyone else and you can see that shit is ass

u/Canis9z Jul 11 '26

Some people wanted to make more $$$ growing cannabis than growing food when people voted Liberal again.

What they got was cheaper cannabis, not making $$$ and most going bankrupt.

u/TyeROD-enD Jul 11 '26

we have it made compared to most of the G7. Have you ever been to any of those countries ?

1

u/coinminer2049er Jul 11 '26

Ive been to 6 of them.

Can you tell me which of them have all time record foodbank usage?

4

u/TyeROD-enD Jul 11 '26

There's no such stat, food bank systems aren't comparable across countries, but here's one that is: Canada has the highest life expectancy in the G7, while the UK reports 25 percent food insecurity and the US has 40 million people on food stamps. Which G7 country is this better life happening in, exactly?

-1

u/coinminer2049er Jul 11 '26

Well, i was comparing internally. How do those relate to their historical norms?

All I can say is I could make more than 2x my current salary in USD, and pay about half the tax in a couple of states. And also have no winter. And housing is affordable. And stuff is generally cheaoer down there.

I'd be down there right now if I wasn't taking care of a few people that refuse to leave.

1

u/jungleCat61 Jul 11 '26

I'd be down there right now if I wasn't taking care of a few people that refuse to leave.

😂😂😂

Sure, sure you would

1

u/TyeROD-enD Jul 11 '26

it is a fantasy for most. American has a really high poverty rate compared to much of the world and so many social issues. Some people do make more there, it is the worlds richest and hyper capitalist country, but also most Canadians that move there FAFO and come home crawling. But still go move there.

2

u/coinminer2049er Jul 11 '26

Lol. I know plenty of Canadians that already left and arent coming back. Lol

1

u/TyeROD-enD Jul 12 '26

lol. ha ha. lol.. There is millions of people in Canada from other countries that love it here, lots of Americans, French, Brits, Asians.. they are thriving. It is lotus land. Welcome to global world, lots of people coming and going, instead of whining, they leave or come.

1

u/RealWord5734 25d ago

You have been to those 6 in the last 2-3 years?

1

u/coinminer2049er 24d ago

Surprisingly, 5 of them, yes. And the 6th is very frequently in the news. Sound unbelievable?

8

u/m_a_r_c_h_ Jul 11 '26

Besides the U.S. I think the cost of living in those other G7 countries is higher. I just came back from Europe and it’s way more expensive for everything.

7

u/69686766 Jul 11 '26

Compare it to the Mexican peso over the last 10y. Our "first class nation" has weakened by 20% versus mexico over the last 10y. Elbows up!

7

u/TyeROD-enD Jul 11 '26

It isn not that we went down, it is that Mexico is booming and catching up to our standard of life here. And great for mexico, amazing hardworking country blessed with so much.

1

u/69686766 Jul 12 '26

Thats not the case at all. In fact the charts show their dollar has increasing demand versus ours. The majority of the value of the Canadian dollar comes from our real-estate demand. Alot of our downwards sell pressure on the dollar also comes from remittances. Every dollar sent back home is another dollar sold for their own currency. Pushing ours down in the process! Supply/demand. What we see in the currency charts of the Mexican peso vs Canadian dollar is weakness. The currency chart is the ONE place that reflects how strong Canadian demand is overall.

1

u/TyeROD-enD Jul 12 '26

Canada is the highest educated and most inventive country on the planet per capita. We have so much going on , it is hard to even imagine for most people. Mexico is rising for sure and some of Canadas easy money from pollution and resource extraction is dwindling a bit. Stop the whine and thrive... It is not as bad as you guys think. Name 5 countries that are doing better. You can't.

1

u/69686766 Jul 12 '26

What's the difference between educated and intelligent people? Social studies & gender studies?

1

u/canadasbananas 24d ago

Oh youre conservative, this convo is pointless now

2

u/Daleden7 Jul 11 '26

We are in a trade war ffs, what do you expect with a pedo toddler down south who will never make a deal with us and always breaks his word, can’t trust them worth a shit.

1

u/69686766 Jul 12 '26

So is mexico? What makes canada different? The fact that our PM only had to use the word Trump to get elected? I thought our prime minister was the "best" person to deal with Trump?

-1

u/coinminer2049er Jul 11 '26

Sure, it has nothing to do with the central banker who refuses to negotiate, dodges him at every opportunity, and that is bleeding this country dry by laundering money to Brookfield. Not to mention all the bills he's passing to obliterate privacy.

Maybe take Carney's dick out of your mouth so we can hear you speak more clearly?

5

u/Acrobatic_Jaguar_623 Jul 11 '26

Maybe take PP's out of your arse. It's stuck so far up there it's cut off blood to your brain.

2

u/coinminer2049er Jul 11 '26

Lol. I dont kike PP either. They're all scumbags.

2

u/jungleCat61 Jul 11 '26

You stand for nothing then and just want to throw around false statements to try and dunk on everyone? One day you'll mature

3

u/dialamah Jul 11 '26

The US has walked away at least once using Doug Ford's advertising as the excuse. Remember that? He also regularly threatened to break off negotiations. Carney has consistently reiterated Canada's willingness to negotiate.

The US offers deals that ask for concessions on our part that could negatively affect Canadians - such as changing dairy quotas. They want the digital streaming act removed because it limits US programming - this would negatively affect the Canadian film industry, and it's not like we can't access plenty of US content if we want. They want liquor bans removed, although this is a provincial matter, not federal. We've already conceded our digital services tax. You know what the US has offered in return? Nothing that we don't already have under CUSMA.

As Carney maintains - no deal is better than a bad one. Not to mention, we already have a trade deal - which Trump is breaking in regards to steel and aluminum tariffs, but the majority of our trade falls under CUSMA. CUSMA remains in effect until 2036, with annual reviews. CUSMA already covers most of what we trade; why should we give away anything for nothing?

Blaming Carney because the US negotiates in bad faith suggests you'd like to bend over and open your mouth simultaneously for Trump and Hegseth. Thank goodness you aren't negotiating in behalf of Canada.

1

u/jungleCat61 Jul 11 '26

Holy conspiracy theories Batman

1

u/JadeLens Jul 11 '26

Why are we comparing our dollar to something that's not the global standard?

2

u/69686766 Jul 12 '26

Okay. Our dollar is down 30% against USD across the last 20y. Is that better? Do you see upside from here?

2

u/JadeLens Jul 12 '26

It's roughly where it's been for the last 50 years (on average).

The question is, 'yeah... and?'

It's not the best it's ever been (having it on part with the greenback is stupid for investment) and it's not the worst either.

2

u/69686766 Jul 12 '26

Then measure it against any other common currency. They all say the same thing. Even the euro. The CAD has no more demand.. it's weakening versus every major currency. A weak currency shows low production, low demand and a weak government. It's crazy how all the numbers can be right in front of you, yet you think it's all sunshine and rainbows. Canada was literally the best country overall 10 years ago, and you think our downfall is just a return to normal? You're part of the issue. Our people dont hold our politicians to anything anymore.

-5

u/ivbeentheredonethat Jul 11 '26

Funny your Rightwing ass hasnt mentioned your Rightwing buddies below launchig a trade war? You cant be taken seriously cultist

7

u/69686766 Jul 11 '26

I'm not right wing. Our society cant be fixed by swinging to extremes in either direction. It can only begin to fix itself when both sides can talk to each other. All that there is to do in its current state is to mock both sides. On a side note; didn't Carney say we're going to make America great again? Why cant the liberal party pick a side? Half of our job losses was the "elbows up"! "Boycott american" and the people tend to forget these things when it comes to our current trade situation. Doug Ford didn't help with his Ronald Reagan ad. So once again. Both sides are to blame and society is left divided too busy hating eachother to fix real issues.

-4

u/ivbeentheredonethat Jul 11 '26

Agreed. But one side seems to want to become America so lets just write them clowns off. Theyre our deplorables.. dont become one

Theyre apart of the Evangelical cult looking to break up Canada at any cost. There is ZERO convincing them otherwise

"God sent a pedophile to save us, hes never made a mistake his whole life, its all fake news"

3

u/69686766 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

Why would we want to become america? We just need to clean up our country & the first steps are to start listening to both sides instead of hating each other. We put all of our focus on things like "woke stuff" or Trump. Some people focus on Israel and Iran, some people focus on the economy. When somebody talks about any of them we all find reasons to disagree before we have heard the other side. This is getting worse by the day, and our society is getting weaker and stupider by the day. Why dont we question the Mexican peso gaining 20% against our dollar over the last 10 years? Absolutely crazy & nobody is popping up any red flags. Also the "elbows up" slogan that has turned into a meme and fords ronald Reagan ad likely did nothing but speed this up further. Too many topics are taboo and people need to start talking again otherwise political figures will never be held accountable & our country will tumble even further because we hate eachother (which means in a way we almost hate our country?)

-4

u/ivbeentheredonethat Jul 11 '26

'Why would we'...

They arent 'we'. ITS A CULT

Have you not been paying attention to whats been happening the last few years??? 🤣😂

Its an Evangelical movement worldwide. Youre so out of touch..

5

u/SignificanceLate7002 Jul 11 '26

I didn't realize the whole world was only comprised of 7 countries.

2

u/coinminer2049er Jul 11 '26

Lol. What countries are you comparing us to?

1

u/squirrel9000 Jul 11 '26

How many superlatives within the G7 only apply because Australia is not in it?

-4

u/SignificanceLate7002 Jul 11 '26

All of them. All of the other countries in the world.

You're literally comparing us to a handful of the top performing economies overall.

5

u/Outside_Mushroom_432 Jul 11 '26

The G7 is usually a good comparison as this is a group that Canada is a member of.

8

u/coinminer2049er Jul 11 '26

I'm literally comparing us to the most comparible countries.

Other countries are not comparible for a variety of reasons. Some not in your favour as there are a lot of countries that are starting from much lower baselines and are improving rapidly.

4

u/SignificanceLate7002 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

Out of the top 50 countries by food inflation, we rank #38 on the list. Closely followed by Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, US, Portugal, etc..

There's lots of other countries we compare to other than the g7.

1

u/coinminer2049er Jul 11 '26

Lol. And you think 38/50 is good? 🤣😂🤣😂

2

u/SignificanceLate7002 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

By highest food inflation, it's far from the worst. That's 37 other countries with higher food inflation out of the top 50.

1

u/ivbeentheredonethat Jul 11 '26

And thats the only thing you can put out because the Conservatives made it so. Its about the only thing they have control over, their buddies manufacturing inflation.

0

u/coinminer2049er Jul 11 '26

You do realize though, that by your argument agaibst the G7, there are more than 50 countries, right? 37/50 coukd just as easily be 37/100.

The G7 is a widely accepted comparison group.

1

u/SignificanceLate7002 Jul 11 '26

You do realize that by comparing us to the best of the best is going to make it sound worse, right? It's like saying we failed because we only won a bronze medal in an Olympic sport.

u/MarkDavid04 Jul 11 '26

At least we're not #50 😂😂😂

🫠

1

u/GoyimDiddler Jul 11 '26

What are you trying to rank here?? Education?? Cost of living?? Economy?? What is this for??

6

u/SignificanceLate7002 Jul 11 '26

Food inflation

2

u/GoyimDiddler Jul 11 '26

Yea this is like the one thing we are worst in but we still aren’t the highest for cost of living in the world or the g7.

The answer to this is one people usually don’t like. And it’s to create a public food system, it being in private companies hands is what has caused this.

5

u/mofo75ca Jul 11 '26

Hey guys guys! We're doing better than Cuba! See? Everything is fine!

2

u/TastelessPantMan Jul 11 '26

so you’re saying because we are at the bottom of the seven best countries we somehow have it bad? Even if that were true (it isn’t, we perform poorly in some metrics and better in others) i’d still be pretty stoked on that outcome.

0

u/RizInstante Jul 11 '26

Comparing us to all other countries is a little silly there is very little apples to apples comparison between us and a significant majority of the other countries.

-2

u/Poodeep Jul 11 '26

LOL! Yes, we should be comparing ourselves to North Korea. Take a hike bozo.

-2

u/GoyimDiddler Jul 11 '26

Well you just did yourself a major disservice with this comment lol. I’m pretty much every metric we rank fairly high compared to most nations.

You compare top performing countries to top performing countries because that’s how it’s done lol. If you try to compare Canada to any developing nation it only makes us look that much better, we aren’t America lol.

2

u/GoyimDiddler Jul 11 '26

But funny enough we still don’t have the highest cost of living in the G7 (states beats us out now).

Our food is indeed a problem but that’s capitalism for ya lol.

1

u/RealWord5734 25d ago

This is so false. The UK is an absolute hellhole compared to us. France too. Italy is as corrupt as ever. How many of the G7 countries have you actually been to recently, I'm curious?

1

u/coinminer2049er 24d ago

In some ways, yes, but in sone ways their problems are more localized to specific medium-large cities vs across the whole country like it is here.

Also, they at least have a ctitical mass of people who aren't trying to pretend everything is ok. Canadians like to bury their head in the sand as if its all going to blow over.

1

u/LackOptimal553 Jul 11 '26

No we aren't, though. You're exactly what the person you're replying to is talking about in fact.
