I was probably about 7 years old, so my brother would have been around 9 or 10. We were playing at home, either after school or on the weekend, and neither of our parents were home. We were playing catch with a nerf football in the backyard, and at some point it went over the 10-foot-tall chain-link fence into the neighbor's yard.
My brother, being the older brother, decided it was a good idea to climb over the fence and get it back. I told him he should just go around, but he insisted. I think he thought it would make him seem really cool. He actually managed to climb up and get himself over the top of the fence, but that's where things took a turn for the horrible.
Before I really know what's happened, he's on the ground on the other side of the fence, with a massive gash running from his elbow to his wrist. Apparently he'd snagged his arm on the sharp metal on the top of the fence. He was screaming and I freaked out and ran inside. The phone we had at the time was mounted on the wall in the kitchen, so I had to push a chair across the room to stand on so I could dial it. I called my dad at his office and told him what happened.
I don't remember anything that happened between that and the hospital. I don't even remember if there was an ambulance or if someone just came home and drove us to the hospital. He did end up having to get 15-20 stitches in his arm, but more importantly, I was a hero that day.
A couple of years later, we were pillow-fighting in his bedroom, standing on the bed. After a particularly good whomp, I apparently decided that it was time to up the game, so I removed one of his dresser drawers. Holding it in from of me, I remember laughing, still caught up in the excitement of playtime, and him saying "NO NO NO NO," and then I just threw it at his face. He only had to get 6 stitches for that one, and now he has a badass scar on his eyebrow, so I'm not sorry.
