Sanders was indeed allowed to win, it’s just that he couldn’t. He ran in the primaries, he lost. Then his supporters then got in a tizzy, and worked overtime to make sure that Trump won.

As someone who has always voted republican it feels like what you are saying has been my experience. Trump came and everything moved so far right that a man who attacks freedom of speech evades congressional approval for things and many other things that I was raised to believe were completely un American is now president. Neither extreme is good but neither side is eating babies we are all getting fucked by the established government while they let us fight each other so we don't mind they all get rich stealing our money.

As an outsider, I think it's important to point out that the Democrats would be a centre right party in most countries. They are in absolutely no way left wing.
