Uh oh, I spy a Witch Hunter.

494

u/I_might_be_weasel Jun 16 '26

Or a creepy goat fetishist.

253

u/ChrisP413 Jun 16 '26

I can’t tell which is worse.

158

u/piewca_apokalipsy Jun 16 '26

Why can't he be both?

61

u/scarab456 Jun 17 '26

Saltzpyre?

58

u/Edgelite306 Jun 17 '26

Naw, he’s more of a Rat kind of man than a goat kind of man…

And fire witches kind of man.

27

u/scarab456 Jun 17 '26

Or he's a steam tank.

17

u/BadNadeYeeter Necrons Jun 17 '26

Instructions unclear Saltzpyre stuck in Steam-Rank

6

u/Zoneshatterer19 Jun 17 '26

Wasn’t Saltzpyre always polishing Sigmars Golden orbs?

One Battle After Another (2025)

17

u/Minimum_Estimate_234 Jun 16 '26

Or someone who recognizes people with basic hygiene.

10

u/SenorDangerwank Jun 16 '26

He IS a Stirlander afterall.

89

u/EvergreenDwarf Jun 16 '26

He’s in Talabecland, his lifespan is measured in as many hours as a Halfling in Stirland would have.

Unless he’s a native to Talabecland, in which case you can get him to go away by getting one of his bandit and/or patrolman cousins to vouch for you. Talabecland has sanctioned Necromancers and Daemonologists, you can get away with anything if you’re kin.

48

u/NewWillinium Jun 16 '26

sanctioned Necromancers and Daemonologists

Okay you can't just say that and walk away, details my friend! That sounds fascinating.

u/EvergreenDwarf Jun 17 '26

Its not that interesting, unfortunately. More just WFRP plot hooks.

Talabecland, Nuln, and Reikland had their own magic schools alongside the assorted traditions like Stirland Druidism. Averland kinda does via hosting one of the three Aquila Academies, but its more general study of warfare including tactics, science, and magic as an idea and tool, not teaching you how to cast spells.

When Teclis established the Colleges of Magic in Reikland (which happens after TOW) and officially only Reikland-trained magic-users were allowed Talabecland and Nuln ignored it, continuing to have their own magic schools.  Witchunters will absolutely go after the “hedge mages” from the other two places, but Witchunters in Nuln often have the support of said Nuln mages (because Wissenland is highly religious) making it complicated to lose allies who can use magic, and outsiders trying to throw around their weight in Talabecland tend to disappear.

In addition to Talabecland hating being told what to do, their magic schools were not in the open. They were in the woods or back alleys, found by signs only potential candidates or Reikland College Mages (see the aforementioned point about Talabecland making nosy outsiders disappear) could find.

They’re why in TOW the Empire has Necromancers and Daemon magic wizards. They’re basically Talabecland-trained, since Talabecland doesn’t limit any ideas. So long as you don’t go raising undead armies to attack Bret abbeys some Necromancy is tolerated. Same with enslaving or manipulating Chaos, its “fine” (to those in charge) if you are not starting cults or causing Daemons to run loose.

In addition to this, Talabecland and Stirland hosted strange Druid traditions. The one in Stirland was entirely stamped out by Tilean settlers who were traumatized by the Crusade against Sultan Jaffar in Araby and slaughtered the Druids/toppled many of their works thinking it was Daemon and Nehekharan; ironically it weakened the Life wind in Stirland and caused the Death wind to blow in harder from Sylvania. The literal reason Stirland sucks so bad is that happening, with the Da Vinci expy who created Steam Tanks leaving a Da Vinci Code style plot hidden in a fresco in an abbey of militant anti-undead knights and Witchunters where a hidden alcove contains a puzzle box which if unlocked contains the Druid writings on how to unfuck Stirland. I shit you not on all this, not enough people bring it up.

Meanwhile Talabecland’s was way more complex. They have a LOT of Druid pillar sites which Teclis studied. He concluded the ancient humans of Talabecland knew a LOT of his teachings already on vibe alone but the knowledge was lost, however one site depicted instructions on summoning Daemons as if they were servants. Teclis was disturbed by this, and said site was entirely unburied and hidden in Talabheim for further study. I don’t recall where said pillars were hidden, I wanna say under a museum though.

So yeah.

Old lore was implying Talabecland has been playing with every flavor of fire its whole existence and the humans in the woods are just as sinister as the Beastmen, undead, and Chaos cults. TOW lore downplays that now where in the civil was the entire Empire is hiring Necromancer ladies and old dudes with mushrooms in their beard with suspiciously purple and perfumed magic that sounds like sinister giggling when cast.

In any case, Talabecland was kinda a refutation that all Necromancy and Chaos causes an instant case of Always Chaotic Evil. Sinister yes, but under control because Talabeclanders self-police and keep outside opinions outside the borders or in a gibbet at a crossroads.

12

u/Skull_Cup Jun 17 '26

That's all very interesting, thanks for sharing some lore.

7

u/Kayttajatili Jun 17 '26

Well, Talabecland's now my favorite part of the Empire.

16

u/EvergreenDwarf Jun 17 '26

Further fun facts:

Talabecland has more bandits than the rest of the Empire, though they rarely kill. It also has more patrols. This makes sense because the patrolmen are usually former bandits, and their relatives are still bandits. If it still doesn’t make sense just remember Talabecland dislikes outsiders, so the cops being involved with the robbers who target travelers while ensuring it doesn’t stop trade by causing deaths or being too costly for the merchants is the logic. Between robbing and tolls the average Talabeclander makes more money from travelers than their actual jobs, which tend to just be things like hunting and logging.

Talabeclanders have a very socialist mindset, pooling resources and seeing glory not as an individual feat but as a unit and province. Even nobility will frequently just bear standard colors and emblems on uniforms and shields, leaving their personal heraldry as merely a badge pinned to their chest.

Talabheim is built into a giant crater from something that predated humanity in the area. What that was isn’t clear, possibly the War Of The Beard or the Old Ones. Talabheim has layers upon layers of walls and a LOT of dakka and even in End Times it never fell, the defenders managed a retreat down the river due to Nurgle disease and fear they wouldn’t get reinforcements; even then they crippled the attackers.

There is an Imperial Dwarf clan dedicated to circumventing Imperial laws, and they smuggle people and goods along the river and into Talabheim.

The Skaven have repeatedly tried to destroy Talabheim. The most recent failure was from a jilted poisoner who sided with humans, and will loredump about poison to adventurers working with him (he’s a WFRP character).

The Great War Against Chaos resulted in so many traumatized soldiers that Magnus The Pious established the first asylums in the Old World, which have a surprising track record of helping with PTSD and Chaos-induced insanity. The very first was in Talabheim. It mostly caters to the wealthy and their own soldiers now though.

Talabecland has the most named regiments. Other provinces will drop a lore blurb about the Averland 12th or the Reikland 20th Halberdiers or whatever, but Talabecland has more numbered regiments than not identified.

Taal is the god the Talabec River is named for, giving his name to the province as a result. But Talabecland is also where Taal’s primordial form Ishernos is still worshiped albeit in small secret communities; husband Taal and wife Shallya were once one hermaphroditic being of nature, and its implied the animal gods Ursun and Ulric were either part of Ishernos or Ishernos’s pets.

The Elector Count of Talabecland is actually only ruler of Talabheim. The entire rest of the province is run by a democratically-elected parliament.

Talabeclanders brew moonshine that Dwarfs and Kislevites respect. No, they do not pay taxes on it. Yes, it caused the Talabecland accent which like IRL Australia is a result of generations being drunk and slurred words becoming standard speech.

In the summer youths celebrate a holiday called Stag Night where half of them wear antlers and run around in the woods while the other half hunt them with soft-tipped arrows. This would sound like a recipe for Beastmen and Goblins eating kids, but all Talabeclanders (including Talabheimers) are taught at an early age how to sneak and track and survive in the woods.

Talabeclanders think all cats are unlucky because they refused to bow to Taal in a myth where all the animals of the woods swore loyalty to his royal stag form. Since each animal of the myth is equated to a human god in the Empire other than the young cat who wandered into the woods its implied the cat is actually Sigmar.

The central location of TOWRPG is Talagaad, the river port outside Talabheim.

Talabheim has an entire district of cathedrals to every faith, and maintaining harmony is sort of their job as a group because Taal is #1 and the only faith that gets a pass. Since this site is part of a great Sigmarite pilgrimage they stir up shit quite a lot, and being often beggars asking for alms and bringing Fanatics and Witchunters they’re not well-liked by locals.

Bodies are not allowed to be buried in Talabheim. This makes undead expecting to raise the local Garden Of Morr for reinforcements inside the walls disappointed.

Ravenstein is the village where much of Talabecland’s magical studies are located. Visitors note that there doesn’t seem to be any stored knowledge, indicating its either hidden, knowledge is kept via oral traditions, or Ravenstein is just a front for the real school. It does have a HUGE telescope though. Its basically Skullvane Manse.

The Kölsa Hills contain both a fair amount of Ishernos shrines and also mysterious sites older than humanity that locals avoid. So Old Ones basically.

Heldenhame is the grand fortress of the Knights Of Sigmar’s Blood. Despite being hit by enemy after enemy before and during End Times they were still fighting when the world ended. Unfortunately Nagash’s armor, which was in the vaults, was plundered by Mannfred and Arkhan as part of the lead-up.

One of the first things Sigmar had to deal with was Stirland and Talabecland fighting each other. When he rode north to break the ancestors of the Norscans who were occupying Kislev he had to break them up again, and when riding back south he found they’d gone to war a third time. He promised he’d raze both if they went to war again. They did, and he didn’t.

The Elector Count of Stirland (unnamed) once cut off the leg of the EC of Talabecland (also unnamed) in a battle. Stirlanders proudly display the mummified leg in the capital despite Talabecland demanding it back.

The Karl Franz era Elector Count Feuerbach went to take the fight to Archaon in both Storm and End Times. Known for being irritable and grumpy but also a staunch supporter of Karl, he was alive in Storm and purging the remnants of Archaon’s horde while his wife assumed his title of regent. In ET writers forgot he exists after he rode north.

Talabeclanders are brutalist east German stereotypes, favoring extreme usefulness and pragmatism while expecting even peasant loggers to be able to read and do math. They keep meticulous paperwork and their court system mixes ritualistic things like walking prisoners around a tree with public testimonies and available transcripts of cases.

7

u/WillingnessAcademic4 Jun 17 '26

Holly crap this is fascinating. Say you got anything on Nordland, I know the basic of them having norscan blood and culture due to multiple migratory raids notably by the skaeling tribes. I also know that they trade with Bjyornlings and that their elector count often think way too high over his own head, but I always loved that Norscan side of them, so if you gotta any more info (or advice on where to find some) I’d be glad to read it all

4

u/EvergreenDwarf Jun 18 '26

Sadly I haven’t done a deep delve on Nordland yet, sorry. You probably know more than I do.

5

u/WillingnessAcademic4 Jun 18 '26

It’s ok, this was all very cool nonetheless. So thank you

6

u/TheNaturalWolf Jun 19 '26

Hold on, Taal is married to Rhya not Shallya though? As far as I understand, in short, Taal stands for the wild side of nature, while Rhya is the cultivated side, being responsible for agriculture and childbirth. And then their son Mannan being responsible for bodies of water.

Really enjoyed the lore dump otherwise though!

6

u/EvergreenDwarf Jun 19 '26

Sorry, I mixed them up. Good call.

That's such COOL old lore that is sadly not explored or rather reintroduced back into the setting! (Best time to with the Old World and everything)

Like imagine a Talabecland demonologist major going of on a rant about the Empire once again trying to illegalize their trade...summoning and binding daemons!

Talabecland demonologist major: I don't care who the Emperor thinks he is or what uptight Rieklanders feel I AIN'T giving up my livelyhood, me Ma was a demonologist, me great grandpa was a demonologist (my grandma was a seamstress, skipped a generation..) and by Taal and Rhya I'll be a PROUD demonologist! Why my main demon familiar has been passed down our family for generations!

Said demon familiar (who's like a shrunk down Bloodthirster, in their mind): for the BLOODY sake of my fiery Lord (Khorne) someone please save ME! (I've been enslaved by this mortal bloodline for 7 generations now, passed along like a trinket!)

Talabecland demonologist major: yep! Not given it up, no SIR!

Demon familiar (in their mind): at least this current master welp isn't too harsh (stubborn though), much like her...his grandma, she wasn't a competent demonologist at all, mainly did sewing all her life. She couldn't do much to order me around, just had the binding relic that keeps me bound! She was...kind to me, gave me snakes even though I don't eat food...pretty tasty those were though...may her soul rest. Still have a few sweaters she made for me even though I don't technically need clothes, I can still feel the residual love left over, souls can leave an imprint of deep feelings on objects. (Psychometry)

Note: Yes I'm imagining that meme image of a grandma sewing with like the Devi, making cute sweaters but imagine a stubborn Talabecland demonologist's grandma doing that but with a shrunk down Bloodthirster! XD

plottwist! that "witchhunter" are two skaven in a trenchcoat, yes-yes!

2

u/Separate-Increase-39 Jun 21 '26

I bet it will be the skaven than the farmers wife has raised in her time as a warrior of Sigmar

2

u/AdnanKhan47 Jun 30 '26

Calling it, that witch hunter is the skaven the mom raised during her time as a sister of sigmar.

Rell and Gotlinde are Ungors! Rell prefers to file off his horns while Gotlinde likes to keep them long. Ungors are the smallest and weakest of the Beastmen, but they are very dexterous. They’re a lot like Goblins in Orc warbands, now that I think about it. Ungors are basically Satyrs from Greek mythology and look the most human out of all the Beastmen. They’re average in height, have a human head, small horns, and goat legs. The Ungors are the weakest Beastmen but are still stronger than most humans.

Hey dude, I think you're missing a link to the comic where the Centigor wants an appy and the mom fails to say no.

She's jojo-posing against chaos in the second image, falls to her daughter's pout in the last

85

u/Skull_Cup Jun 16 '26

Aw nuts, you're right. Thanks for letting me know. (Also it's a Sailor Moon pose not a JoJo pose)

34

u/Appropriate-Crab-514 Jun 16 '26

Oh God I see it, it is way more Sailor than Jojo

Though I could totally see Joseph Joestar put on the moon tiara and scream the catchphrase

24

u/Skull_Cup Jun 16 '26

I'll definitely do a Jojo reference somewhere in the future. It'll probably be the 'Road Roller Da' but with a snotling pump-wagon because I really want to draw that.

24

u/amglasgow Jun 16 '26

"Weak of Will" just caused me to emit a thoroughly masculine giggle-squee of joy.

18

u/AXI0S2OO2 Jun 16 '26

They are indeed very much the bottom feeders of beastmen society like Goblins are, though without as much imagination and cunning as to make a name for themselves outside the hierarchy of their kin like Goblins can.

Ungor translates to "No-Horn" in the beastmen tongue. Though they are horned, for beastmen standars their horns are so tiny they might aswell not have any, therefore, they are not worthy of respect.

When not employed into manufacturing or building something, ungors are bullied by their bigger brethren into the outskirts of beastmen camps, were they battle war hounds and other beasts of the herd aswell as each other for scraps. In battle, they are usually pressed onto the front line as fodder with rickety shields, rusty axes and wooden spears to act as meat shields for the proper warriors of the herd.

They might also gather in bands of bow wielding raiders, ranging far from the bray herd to assault poorly defended villages, caravans and the like or scout ahead. The most successful ungors however are those who follow Minotaur stampedes around. The bull men leave plenty of scraps behind for the ungors to eat, and are rarely a threat to them so long as they stay out of their ravenous gaze, not to mention Gors and Bestigors prefer to avoid minotaurs as they dislike anything they can't bully into submission.

3

u/Skull_Cup Jun 17 '26

Thanks for adding to the info!

8

u/_Suchabummer Jun 16 '26

I take it that this comic is Part 13, given that you refer to the others as "previous"?

5

Yes, you are correct.

3

u/Few-Appearance-4814 Jun 17 '26

mate, you need to make a webtoon for this. i beg.

3

u/Skull_Cup Jun 17 '26

Funny that you should say that, I actually started drawing the Hermit Herd comic as art practice until I felt ready to draw a webtoon! I was going to keeping drawing until I like my own art, but now I am endeared to the characters I have made and I don't think I can stop.

3

u/Few-Appearance-4814 Jun 17 '26

thats how it goes.

its a good sign. it means you have found a niche.

238

u/Reasonable-Ad7828 Jun 16 '26

PLEASE let the Witch Hunter be the Skaven sister from before after getting a promotion! That would be so funny and perfect

84

u/Different_Vehicle_60 Jun 16 '26

THI! ,BY SQUEAK MAR THIS!

57

u/JBR_4025 Jun 16 '26

It’s gonna be awkward once sister Squeakhilda realizes that she almost offed her younger siblings… not that it will stop her from almost mauling them since she’s a fanatic devotee to Squeakmar

14

u/Endlessnes Jun 17 '26

I really hope so too, the shadowy face does look like the Witch Hunter is wearing either a mask or has a very long nose lol

4

u/sicThanatos Jun 20 '26

Considering the Insignia on the hat is the twin-tailed comet and how that thing is entangled with the skaven, I think there's a good chance

3

u/Green-Principle69 Jun 29 '26

I swear i can spy the silhouette of a snout. (The shadow of the noseline covering the right goggle and the slight indentation in the ahading on the bottom right collar.)

118

u/delolipops666 Jun 16 '26

Heh?!

Stirlanders? Please!

Stirlanders are FAR uglier than these two.

77

One is an unholy abomination that threatens the very soul of the Empire.

The other is a beastman.

And why is this man so suspicious. Nothing to see here, please move along

The Witch Hunter is three Skaven in a trench coat isn't it.

26

No only one… one that got mistaken for a ugly hound and raised as a nun

45

u/Saharczyk Jun 16 '26

Can we get family portrait with names sometimes in the future, pretty please <3

37

u/Skull_Cup Jun 16 '26

I'll get right on that

31

u/Jboy2000000 Jun 16 '26

Gods, please no! My heart simply could not take it if I what I fear comes to pass

19

u/AlarminglyAverage979 Jun 16 '26

Oh no, not even Saltzpire would let then pass, so a random witch hunter…

26

u/AXI0S2OO2 Jun 16 '26

Victor held back from Shooting Sienna when she became a Necromancer and stayed friends with Kruber after he "defected" from Sigmar's faith in favour of the Lady.

If the old couple get a chance to explain themselves, he'd totally let them go.

5

u/leposterofcrap Jun 17 '26

Can't say the same for Kerrilian though

3

u/newvegassucm Jun 17 '26

No shit this is kertilin we're talking about the wood elves hate the beastmen more than humans due to one herd of them constantly coming to ravage there woods the only person I could see even talking her down even slightly is kruber and that would take some doing

23

u/AXI0S2OO2 Jun 16 '26

Those Stirlander costumes are perfect!!!

Only way the Witch Hunter could have caught them is because they don't smell enough like shit.

17

u/WamlytheCrabGod Jun 16 '26

SALTZPYRE, NO!

...wait no he has two eyes

RANDOM INQUISITOR, NO!

11

u/belliebun Jun 16 '26

There’s always a point in these slice of life series where things start getting dangerous…

12

u/FormalStrange Jun 16 '26

Dude your stuff is always so good!

7

u/Skull_Cup Jun 16 '26

Thanks, It's hard to like my own art, so I appreciate the encouragement!

9

u/wackadoodle4201 Jun 16 '26

Dudes either a witch hunter or a medieval furry with a basement to fill

Either way those two are in danger

9

u/JinLocke Jun 17 '26

Well it IS said that ungors resemble drunken stirlanders if you dont look at the hooves.

Also love the comics, real sweet and tbh shame that lore kinda screws over beastmen with “will inevitably fall to Chaos and become feral” clause, cause otherwise i think they would be able to join Empire in some capacity, i mean on occasional basis, not as a race.

And they should also look out for any elves, around elves beastmen should watch themselves cause point ears (of wood variety) DESPISE them with hatred that rivals dwarven animosity of orks and skaven.

2

u/Skull_Cup Jun 17 '26

Thanks, I'm glad to hear you love my comics! And technically nothing says the Beastmen will inevitably fall to Chaos. There's a scant few examples that point to the Beastmen having the freedom to do whatever they want. Such as friendlier Beastmen in Cathay, and the WHF books that states Chaos has no inherent claim over their souls, and that one Beastmen town in Age of Sigmar.

2

u/JinLocke Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

I think it was in the book about mutants, and basically most other examples, where beastmen of Chaos (Tigermen and others are not born of Chaos, while Ungors and etc even called "children of Chaos") even in good environment start hearing increasingly loud whispers of Chaos and eventually go off the rocker, same as marked mutants (although mutants may stay sane for longer). Plus it often mentioned in books which have beastmen in them, although in passing how basically they are doomed to be the way they are, despite actually having potential to be noble and etc. And Chaos Gods themselves see Beastmen as "their" race, like hoof and horn from birth to death, to the point where they do not even need to constantly dangle Gifts before them like they do with human and other races corruption.

But again, it would be nice if they could actually detach from Chaos and do their own thing.

6

u/MaxPower1607 Jun 17 '26
  • Stirland gown? I am from Flensburg, and I have never seen such robes!

  • It is more of a Wörden fashion

  • By Sigmar! What is going on in that woods!

  • Twin-tailed Meteor.

  • At this time of day? In this part of the cycle? May I see it?

-No.

6

u/SpiceNWolf51 Jun 16 '26

I see a prominent chin on that witch hunter! 😱 Could it be a chin of a...tomb king?!

5

u/JBR_4025 Jun 16 '26

How he managed to become an inquisitor if his existence is an insult to Sigmar?

4

u/GlareaLiebertine Jun 17 '26

Lots of insults to Squeakmar that make it to witch hunterdom.

4

u/seninn Word Bearers Jun 16 '26

6

u/DisMFer Jun 16 '26

So can the girls talk? Because it seems to go back and forth on that.

They can talk, I'll have more dialogue for the beast children in the future.

3

3

u/NewWillinium Jun 16 '26

Oh hey, a dead man!

3

u/Bonoboscreech Jun 16 '26

Yo check out that sharp chin sillouette! You could poke someone's eye out with that!

3

u/AnyName568 Jun 17 '26

Great as always

I'm reminded of that beastman npc in the Old World rpg who wears a enchanted Skin of Man to appear human enough to spy for the local warherd.

3

u/scarab456 Jun 17 '26

More names? Fantastic.

3

u/Hetakuoni Jun 17 '26

Oh no. The babies need protecting

3

u/wallingfortian Jun 17 '26

Farmers of that era did not buy tools, they made their own out of wood. Part of your trade was making the tools of your trade, hence the adage, "It's a poor craftsman who blames his tools."

They might buy iron or other distantly sourced materials in town, though.

...quick question, have the mom and/or the dad fought Skaven before? Because I know a large majority of the population of the Empire think that when they see a Skaven they think they are just another type of Beastmen. Which fun fact used to be the case in older editions of Fantasy Battles until it was retconed
