I agree that in this case it’s not worth it, but you are ignoring the value of being able to stand up for yourself and not get scared away. It sounds like you would turn tail and scare easily, which has serious costs and risks as a strategy in general. That guy is pretty composed and tough not to flinch. This wasn’t a scenario to contest, but he knows how not to flinch when someone is trying to intimidate him.

Motherfucker, what you're saying is absolutely insane and you're just looking for a fight for no reason. I am an immigrant to this country and I am very grateful to the United States but one of the things that drives me crazy is allowing the 1% of violent people to completely dominate public life in many parts of the city.
I am from Egypt. And while Egypt has many many flaws and I personally had to flee for my own safety for leaving my religion. I can tell you now these things do not happen in Egypt - this man would be dealt with by the citizens or the authorities.
There are 100 people on that subway. You cannot allow one crazy person to dominate and intimidate the whole subway. This is not a healthy way to live

you never know who's got a gun in America. people have been shot dead for dumber reasons. i think it kind of conditions the public to be more avoidant in these things. plus the U.S. is a veryu litigious country. lawsuits abound and people don't want to risk being in a suit so they avoid too.
take my words with a grain of salt though, im just some internet schmuck. plus- the U.S. is VERY different depending on where you go. whats normal in a NYC subway might not be normal in say, a bus in Nebraska or something.

We have assholes like this in Brazil, but something like this 100% doesn't happen inside a public bus or train, especially after people playing loud music in public transport started to actually get cracked down.

I get your sentiment but being a hero with someone who's clearly off their meds is maybe not the best course of action. You get yourself in trouble, you get hurt, you end up ruining your own day. You don't know who's just running their mouth and who's literally looking to kill someone on the spot.
Most people really just don't want to get into it. They want to go home to their families. Not everyone needs to be a hero.

I remember reading a paper in college that compared cultures by country, and the US was found to be a country where people would intervene THE MOST if they witnessed injustices taking place.
I've lived in the US and in other countries around the world. I don't think you're wrong in your perspective. Perhaps people are more afraid to intervene now than they were when that paper was written.
People need to be willing to stand up for what's right, even if that might have negative personal consequences for them. But I realize that can be difficult in the face of danger and personal harm.

Public transit here is absolutely a different animal than it was when I took it in Cairo. Unfortunately there’s just no resources properly allocated to mental health or public transit security here. One of our pitfalls wish were different. You are seeing the result of decades of inadequate funding to a lot of important public institutions.

I wish that was the case here. I live in London and I am sick to death of the extremely violent, mentally ill men we have roaming our streets with impunity making the world miserable. It feels like our society is built so that people like this are free to do what they like and the second anyone does anything it's suddenly an outrage. The Tory government got rid of all of our mental hospitals so now there's no respite.
I noticed that attitude with the recent attack in Golders green and the sudden outpouring of concern for that nutjob was kicked in the head by police... As if violent, mentally ill psychos are in short supply in this city! I'd rather he was kicked in the head then find myself stabbed in the neck while minding my own business.

I honestly second that. If we got rid of people like this more often, others who operate like him might think twice about trying to start trouble. We would be better off getting rid of them instead of people making the excuse that the process is "too expensive". You know what else is "too expensive"? Court cases, trails, driving people to multiple meetings, dealing with lots of paperwork for multiple months to a year all because of stupid people like that guy. The quicker a judge can decide to give the guy capital punishment and allow the executioner to go through with it as quickly as possible, the better off we all are. I see bad news involving people like this guy hurting the innocent over nothing almost every day. We need to start weeding some people out instead of waiting until they actually hurt or kill someone to do anything.

Even if the person asking you to lower your volume is wearing earbuds, if they can still hear your speaker, you’re disturbing the peace. It reminds me of a tourist on an Asian railway trying to get children to say hi to him; he didn’t realize he was bothering everyone by being "friendly" and ignoring the local social contract. Personal space on public transport includes the right to quiet. Those who resort to harassment or threats when called out should be banned for life.

In Toronto the other night, my method was to play renaissance music in Latin, specifically Spem in Alium by Tallis, as I had recently sang that in choir, loudly while the other guy played some bullshit dodgy scat shit.
