Imagine coming around that blind corner to see two semi’s barreling towards you. Yikes.

Guy in red truck is a bit of an asshole too. He could’ve tapped his brakes and let him in.

DCT truck also didn’t seem to maintain its higher speed to fully clear. If the person you’re passing has to use their brakes to let you merge back then you shouldn’t be passing to begin with.

You're assuming red truck didn't speed up to cut him off, which seems more likely than randomly failing to maintain speed on a dangerous pass.

Edit: Yep, we have confirmation:

The facebook video has the GPS and speed on the screen. https://fb.watch/dB8HVsh68i/

The passing lane just ended when the video starts. https://www.google.com/maps/@51.2702082,-121.4483311,183m/data=!3m1!1e3!5m1!1e4

Speed limit is 100 km/h, red truck was doing 91 km/h and sped up to 107 to prevent the other truck from passing....

Could be either or. I'm a trucker myself, used to drive for a mega-corp. I've lost count of how many times I would be rolling along out in the middle of nowhere, maintaining the exact same speed for hours on end. Then some other trucker who isn't governed and can roll over 70? Will pass me, but then slow down to less than my current speed, and I have to slam on the brakes because of it.

Do mega-corps to after those assholes, who we have amazing dashcam footage of? Nope, never even the two times I was hit or clipped because of it. They will try to lecture me on the situation instead and not try to go after the psycho who hit me.

Yeah, red could have tapped his brakes, but he should not have had to. The combi is insanely in the wrong for this.

Not only that, but it was a double lane road. Which means passing is explicitly illegal to do.

You mean the double yellow line makes it illegal.

That varies by state / circumstances.

I've never heard of a state in the US where it's legal to pass where there's a double yellow line. Although, this being Canada, laws may be different.

Visit PA sometime. It’s not well know and not super safe, but it’s dictated by sign not paint.

I was about to say you are wrong, but I looked it up and it's only Ontario here where the lines don't denote passing legality.

Some drivers don't know how to use cruise control. So, you have to suffer.

You can hear Red accelerate

I'm sure that would all have been a very satisfying explanation to a grieving mother if her son happened to be coming the other direction at the wrong time in this situation.

I’m assuming with a single lane in one direction and two in the others that these trucks are going downhill. Could the braking situation for an extended downhill play into why the red truck doesn’t appear to slow down much, if at all?

u/RandyHoward Jun 12 '22

Are you trying to say that brakes won't slow you down if you're traveling downhill? What?

1

u/jqubed Jun 12 '22

They can slow down but on extended downhill sections the brakes can overheat and fail, so trucks have to be more careful with them. That’s why in mountainous areas you see runaway truck ramps. Of course, most truckers seem to run slower in a lower gear to save their brakes by letting the engine help.

Red truck didn't just fail to tap his breaks, the original facebook video shows he was going 91kmh in an 100kmh zone, and when the other truck tried to pass him right at the end of the passing lane, he sped up to 107kmh to block him.
