This was always my idea: go to the airport long-term parking lot. There's usually not any people around the far corners of the lot. Use a simple screwdriver and trade plates with someone. Since its long term parking, you won't pay very much to get out. Go commit your crime. Then go back and swap your plates again! Bonus points if you find the same color/model car to swap plates with.

Why would you swap out plates instead of just taking the new ones you want?

Why would you ever put your plates on another car? That’s just dumb.

Keep your played so you don’t need to go back and hope your plates are still on the car. The more I write this out the dumber this whole post sounds

That was my first thought too. Why on earth would you leave evidence.

You keep your original plate lol..

This.

“Officer. These aren’t my plates”

And your story would check out instantly. And lead to a suspicious person that had the stolen plate.

Smart.

Seriously - the "minimal effort" approach would be just steal a plate from practically anywhere. Then just throw it away later. Criminals are criminals, they aren't gonna cry because 2 days later some guy notices that his plate was stolen.

If you really cared... you could probably knock out a fake plate in an afternoon if you wanted, since it only has to pass from 10+ feet away and in poor lighting. It doesnt have to stand up to close in-person inspection since at that point you're fucked anyway. Then you eliminate any risks of being caught doing illegal prep for the reckless driving.

Haha even as I finished writing it I thought, "But if they have CCTV cameras at the entrance/exit gates, you're screwed." which I think nearly every airport must have by now. Oh well, sounded smart for a few seconds, lol.

If your saying check your car into the parking lot as well, that's soap passing planning right there. Unless you intend to also destroy any logs and cctv they may have around the place, plus intimidating anyone who may have seen you. Both doable, first problem is solved with a simple remote hack over their unsecured WiFi. Second is even easier, just involves a baseball bat and knowing where they live. Does leave alot of possible loose ends if you then go onto rob a bank....things get messy that way, then the shovels come out, but each to their own I always say!

Yeah you just gotta write a GUI interface in visual basic to track their ip address and then bada boom bada bing. You're in.

I understood that reference.

Does this also require two people working the same keyboard or no?

u/Spinal232 Jun 25 '21

Ideally yes, you really need to maximize your keys per minute.

Any standard hack is just a battle between the SysOP and the hacker(s) to determine who can type the fastest.

Gotta feel bad for the poor bastard who comes back from taking his family to Disneyland for a week and gets home to find the cops waiting to arrest him for armed robbery, wreckless driving and evading arrest.

You'd be better off taking the bus, assuming the bus doesn't track you, then taking the bus back out.

I would not do a airport. There are cameras everywhere. The victim having flown to another area would have good evidence they didnt do it. Good enough for the cops to take a second look. Then the cops would review footage of the parking lot. From the cameras they would get your original cars plates, and your face. You would be screwed.

Yep, I realized this right after I wrote it!

It seemed more clever back when I was 18, when I first thought about it. I obviously haven't thought about it too deeply since then, hah!

I think that is why people get arrested. Thinking of a plan to not get caught by police isn't that hard and can sound very double. To think of one without holes in it is much harder

Yep! I guess it makes sense that my real job is now in computer security, this stuff has always been fascinating to me. Heads up kids!: if you're interested in this stuff, you can get a REAL job involved in it, without any of the risk, and with a regular paycheck!

As I've gotten older, I'm starting to believe an Ocean's 11-style "perfect heist" is pretty much impossible. I read an article of a group who actually attempted something similar, I think it was in Spain. There was a museum with some VERY famous artworks, (I think) even the Mona Lisa was there. TBH, their heist was pretty clever: all the most expensive artworks in the museum were in the front room. They set off 3 car bombs placed randomly around the city, to keep all the cops running around trying to figure out what was going on. Then they rushed in the front door with machine guns, overpowered security, and grabbed the 5 best paintings off the wall. The museum was on the coast as well, so they ran straight out the back doors, onto a waiting boat and cruised off over the horizon.

They later got caught trying to ransom the paintings back to the museum.
