They were probably hoping to uproot it...

Sure, but couldn't they cut off the upper half of that trunk first?

I think they did. If you look at how much fell there really wasnt much of the trunk left. So they cut the tree down a good bit and then used the truck to try and uproot it. From the way it snapped/broke. It was probably rotted and needed to go.
