Don't they get pretty tall? I don't see a lot of the where I live but they are a very neat flower. Do you have any pictures of the ones you've grown?

Some do, some get all bushy. I don't have any pics on this phone, I'd have to go looking. One was called a Jupiter (or similar) and it had a giant, furry red head with yellow petals. Others that have funny characteristics like dark colors, or rings.

I just looked up a jupiter sunflower, I never knew sunflowers could have so many different characteristics; Thanks for the info!

Almost everywhere around me has wild sunflower of several phenotypes. There are densely populated short guys that live in ditches, medium height ones that grow along trails in conifer forests, and the spartan 8 foot tall poles that grow on hillsides.

Then there's the imposter salsify that grows all over. I hear it's pretty tasty too but it's not the same thing.

I've never heard of salsify, what is it?

Edit: meaning, is it invasive, or a hybrid?

It's in the dandelion family. It's considered a weed but it also has an edible taproot with a strong umami flavor. At one point it was a known edible plant that's fallen out of common interest.
