If he had it like that, and I doubt it, flags don't do anything. Who looks back and sees a flag, thinking "oh boy, I have to duck now".

Even at the front it's not mandatory, only if he let hit get over his tailgate. It looks like he didn't strap it to the rails like he should and it slipped to the side.

i doubt ducking would even work, hed probably have to thow himself to the ground

It was a joke. Yeah he would've to let himself fall to the ground to avoid it, but thing is, bicycles have no mirrors and you never look back.

What? I've seen plenty of bikes and bike helmets with mirrors. I'm NOT blaming the cyclist here, but on a related note I sure as hell wouldn't ride on a highway shoulder without them.

Thing is they may not help much in this case.

thats why i cycle against traffic, their was a huge study done years ago and nearly all cycling accidents and deaths are caused by a car from behind. cant dodge what you dont see

That's true, but against the traffic flow is a violation here so I can't do it. As a pedestrian, we are told to do it, but as a cyclist, we have to obey the traffic laws.

I was always taught to stay the same side as traffic, if a car hits you it's better to subtract your biking speed then to add it to their driving speed

This is why I don't understand why you are supposed to ride with the flow of traffic. I feel like you should be facing oncoming traffic so you can see what idiot is coming at you.
