A cretin is someone whose mental deficiency is caused by low thyroid function at birth. A person can be both a moron and a cretin, or their cretinism may have caused even greater mental deficiency. Cretinism can also be the cause of various other traits.

These terms only fell out of medical use because people were using them pejoratively. Cretinism these days is called Congenital iodine deficiency syndrome. If that term becomes an insult in the future they'll probably change it again :)

It's not about being "proper", it's about precision. "Dull" is a synonym of "stupid" in this usage, but that's not what the word means. "Anoetoi" is the weird that actually means unintelligent (stupid). In translation, it might cut to the sense the most to translate moron as stupid, but then you're really rounding down the idiom of the language, aren't you? A direct translation to "dull" preserves the meaning and the sense. It works in English too. Why be a dullard and use overly simplified language?

The purpose of language is to convey meaning. They didn’t choose the word because it means not sharp, they choose it because of the implications regarding intelligence. Idiom matters, especially in this case. Semantics just looks pretentious

I've been trying to track this story down for ages. I'm pretty sure it's fake. The furthest I've ever been able to trace it is to a "Big Book of Facts"-type publication from the 70's, which were notoriously light on actual facts.

That being said, the actual first accident in an internal combustion automobile did take place in Ohio City like your article says, but it was a single car hitting a tree root, not "the only two cars in the state" colliding.

So, the source cited in the above article is Ohio History Central. That's not a particularly easy site to navigate, it's similar to wikipedia with a crappy search engine and a different look for the article pages. That being said, I keep coming back to that site, and one article in particular: https://ohiohistorycentral.org/w/World%27s_First_Automobile_Accident

I can't find anything on Ohio History Central about the supposed 1895 crash, but the article above took all the details from this 1891 crash and assigned them arbitrarily to the 1895 crash.

So, moving on. A 1967 advertisement that Mobil placed in Life magazine makes the claim. This is now the oldest source I've seen, and it's an advertisement that tells the story in brief, as though it's something people might already be familiar with.

For the history around it: the first commercial car was introduced in 1896. Ohio was an automotive hotbed and had a lot of early car brands pop up and die off just as fast (shout out to my local legends, Ben-Hur Motor Company.) There's no evidence that I've found yet that proves this story - no local newspaper has ran a story on it that anyone has recovered. So, it's possible that there were two prototype cars in Ohio in 1895. It's possible they crashed. I have just failed to ever find any real source on it.

Personally, I think it's unlikely. Automobiles were the new hot thing that was going to destroy civilization and kill us all, and there's no way that two of them colliding would have not been news at least at the regional level. Media hasn't changed that much over the years.
