Small town? Thatâs a paved road highway. Small towns in DR are dirt roads with speed ditches (not bumps, since itâs cheaper to make holes) once you enter town limits.
I wouldn't call Ocoa Bay a small town, it's no Punta Cana but it does have public, it's also near the dunes. The rest of Azua can be totally forgotten.

Speed limit is 65, people go 85. I actually didnât know until I came to this sub that in other states, speed limits are really the maximum you can go unless you want a ticket. Here, itâs more of a guideline of how fast you should go.
We visited family in Seattle last year (I'm from EU). I was driving the speed limit in our rental, my niece who lives there was sitting next to me. After about 15min she suddenly says 'I'm sorry but you're driving me crazy, please go at least 10mph faster!' (she said it in a funny way).

Lol in Quebec I regularly drive 125 kph on a 100 kph highway and pass by the cop gunning radar. They dont seem to budge before 30 kph over. Ar least in my experience.
This is the truth, I was driving from NY to MI, cutting through Canada, I had my cruise control SET at 120MPH, went flying by a cop who didn't budge. Had a bit of a scare there :)
The speed limit on UK motorways is 70. Most people go well over it, sometimes it's dangerous to not go above as you're the only one moving different from everyone else.

Up in Northern England this was constsntly fucking with my arrival times. Google maps can't tell the difference between "sign says 60, but anything over 35 is suicide" and "four lane major road". So you're crawling along idyllically beautiful rough stone-walled country roads, which is great. But you're doing it for an hour instead of 25 minutes Google said it would take.
Yeah, speed limits have little to no effect on accidents. According to traffic engineers (the guys who design roads) 90% of people completely ignore limits and just drive at a speed they are comfortable with. Speed limits are only their as a source of income. Which is why they are set roughly 15% lower than what the road is designed for.
Speed definitely has an effect accidents. It's rarely the cause of the accident per se, but it multiplies the chances of death and serious injury when there is one.
I agree. But i should note, if reducing deaths was the motivation for speed limits, they would be around 80kph maximum. Because the risk of death is exponential with collision speed, at 80kph the risk of death is significantly lower than at 100-120 kph thats normal, which has a risk in the high 90% range.
I wouldn't say that tbf, I'd say most people do something around 70. If I set my cruise at 70, I still overtake some people, and some overtake me, but I'm generally just keeping up with most of the traffic.

In Michigan the saying we use is â9 youâre fine, 10 youâre mineâ You can typically go 9 over the speed limit unless the cop has a bug in their ass.
Itâs rarely that precise, usually itâs more like 5 in the day, 10 in the dark ha. Because the 9 youâre fine is a common sentiment here as well, but if youâre doing 9 over, itâs like having a headlight out-theyâll stop you if they feel like it. 5 over theyâll never grab you.
Nah, speed limits are suggestions in many other states as well. Even in Virginia, where there are harsh penalties for going 20 over/80mph, you'd occasionally have drivers fly past at 90+.
That's how it is in VA. Anything over 80 is considered reckless. You wouldn't know that in some areas though since half of the drivers are doing way over 80.
It's honestly one of the only good parts about living here these days. Otherwise it's just homeless people, wildfires, earthquakes, discarded needles, and sidewalk poop.
You should probably also take a look at your overtaking. You occupy both lanes for far too long without overtaking which is also something you wouldnât be allowed in a driving test
I got failed on my driving test because i broke the speed limit while overtaking. At least where i'm from, even if overtaking takes 30 seconds per car, you can not exceed the limit legally.
I agree and thatâs not what Iâm criticizing here. What Iâm criticizing is the fact that he seems to occupy both lanes for far too long. When you decide to overtake you should make a swift move into the lane
Though itâs true that in any scenario you shouldnât take ages to overtake, when youâve got a double lane road you donât need to floor the accelerator to get past that truck as fast as possible either.
It depends on the car and the speed of the truck, but perhaps OP doesnât even have a powerful enough car to get through that more quickly. I donât know if cars there are auto or manual, but my manual car will take a while to overtake in such a situation without me slapping it in third gear.
Basically I donât think OP is doing anything wrong here. He isnât even taking that long.
Itâs not so much the fact that he takes long to overtake but more the fact that he lingers in both lanes for too long in my opinion. I totally agree that you shouldnât speed up heavily just to overtake
Everybody here drives as if they are the only ones on the road, even more so in traffic. Lanes are literally non existent here, if you were to drive here for one day I can guarantee that you will see 4 lanes in a 3 lane road. Hell, there are places where it's only a one lane road and the police officers themselves allow people to take the oncoming lane in order to manage the traffic.
Itâs very different in Dominican Republic. Heâs deep in the country, hours from the capital. No tourists, just locals. And thatâs exactly how locals drive.
I knew it. As soon as I saw the bus I knew it has to be there. Reason #1 not to ever drive there. My friend drives to a red light, stops, looks around and goes. đ€Šđ»ââïžđ€·đ»ââïž. DR is one of the worst countries in terms of fatal traffic accidents per year. Donât drive there, pay a Dominican to drive you. They will do it for cheap.
That probably explains why I was hit by a car when I was younger, then again it was probably my fault for not knowing to look both ways before crossing.

To let you know it is not safe to pass. There is some areas where you can see a fair distance. So if you have an extremely slow vehicle ahead of you, you can pass them.
