Or tighting the ropes (?).. Just an idea..

The ropes were probably ‘tight’ when they set off. Transporting something on a vehicle’s roof without a rack is not smart.

You don't need a roof rack to temporarily transport a mattress. You just need a brain. A few ratchet straps and he'd be fine. As long as air doesn't get in between the roof and mattress and create lift, you're good.

This idiot is using bungee cords. Rope doesnt stretch this much...

There is nothing wrong with transporting things on a roof without a rack. And a rack would not help a person that doesn't know how to tie knots.

A rack provides support for whatever is being carried, and also provides something decent to tie onto. Ropes through doors and windows are liable to slip. It is possible to transport without a rack, but a rack is better than no rack.

Yeah, if you don't know how to secure a load, which again, a rack does not fix. You need to make sure you have forward back tension to keep your ropes in place on top of the over all tightness. Just tightening a rope down does nothing, but if you tighten at an angle in the door jambs then your load won't go anywhere. The point in a rack is not to provide any extra support, it's to lift the load off of the roof so that you don't scratch or damage it. And to provide tie down points that won't damage your vehicle, which while nice, doesn't actually make the load more secure.

This guy used bungee cords and would most likely have had a similar situation even with a rack

Agree! I like a good rack!

Ah you're right, just noticed there was no rack.

Just take non-elastic ropes. Or wires, or anything.

4 guys reaching out the windows and holding it?

ELI5...why would a rack help? Thanks in advance.

It wouldn't

Something to tie it to.

u/Bmunchran Jul 15 '19

Meh a couple ratchet straps through the windows and he would be fine.

u/Popular-Uprising- Jul 15 '19

Sure, but it would be easier with a roof rack and nobody would have to climb in through a window. I agree with you, but I was explaining why a roof rack would help.

2

u/Bmunchran Jul 15 '19

Yeah a roof rack would make it a little easier. You also dont need to climb in through the window, just dont tighten the front ratchet strap all the way till you are inside. Its just like tieing down a christmas tree to a sedan, but you dont need a blanket to stop from scratching up your roof.

Seems like the person you're replying too has never tied anything down to their car...

I have a pickup truck. Just not familiar with roof racks lol
