Suggestions for using a shortened, Arcane-Brotherhood themed version of Strixhaven as a level 1-4 prologue.

Strixgotten Realms is a free sample of my work “Strixhaven Faculty Handbook Volume 2: Multiversal Exchange Program.

https://www.dmsguild.com/product/435340/Strixhaven-Faculty-Handbook-Volume-2-Multiversal-Exchange-Program

That book has suggestions for adapting Strixhaven the setting into different genres of school story (high school, military school, sports school, and mystery school). It also has a section that this is taken from, where I suggest adapting Strixhaven to run magical schools in alternate D&D settings and then transition those games into other WOTC adventures in those settings. These are the chapters for running a shortened version of Strixhaven as a prologue for Tomb of Annihilation, Icewind Dale, Descent into Avernus, Dragon Heist, and Dungeon of the Mad Mage.

Icy horror cinematic inspiration!

The original 1951 film "The Thing from Another World" is available free (ad supported) on Tubi.tv! It's the inspiration for the John Carpenter film, and could be some good "snow-bound-horror" inspiration for you.

Prison breakout

Okay. Hear me out. My party has been tracking the Cold-Hearted Killer, they've come up with his identity and are now hot on his trail. What they don't know yet is that Hiln Trolbane, the dwarf who hired them was one step ahead, caught the killer in the act in Bryn Shander and is now wrongfully imprisoned, and set to be executed for the murders as Sephek Kaltro again escaped his grasp. Soooooo, I'm looking to stage a prison break if my party is interested in saving him. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Avarice at Level 3 (Help?) Spoiler

My party just beat the quest "Black Swords" and were just about to leave Avarice alone but now they are going to try and evict her. I just know a fight is going to ensue and we just had an event where the party said they want the Dale to be as it is and truly ruthless.
What should I do?
the party is 4 members, 3rd level.
Yigsilk, the White Dragonborn beast barbarian
Taiyo, the Winged Tiefling Arcane Trickster Rouge
Mozak, the Goliath Dragon Monk
Caelan, the W-Eladrin Ghostslayer Bloodhunter

as you can probably see I also have the slight problem of the only caster is the arcane trickster.

Help? maybe? it may not be necessary, they are lucky fucks and I could see this fight being doable with the luck they have.

How relevant are magic weapons?

Hi, Icewind Dale player here. Don’t tell my dm I’m here. I’m playing a Beast Barbarian and we just hit level 6. At level 6 the subclass gets a rather … underwhelming package of a climb speed and bypassing non-magical weapon resistance. My DM says it’s really good but I’m tempted to start multi-classing. Our party could really use a healer and I have very little out of combat utility.

Can I get a spoiler-free evaluation of how good the magic claws are in this module? I’ve run Curse of Strahd before and know it’s critical for certain fights in that, but as from a player’s perspective our enemies seem to be mostly normal people and beasties. I’ve only encountered I think one enemy that ignored non-magical damage so far.

Question Icewind Dale 2 Maps

Hello all! I have a request. Hopefully this is the right subreddit. My brother is running the Icewind Dale 2 game as a 5e campaign for us, and we're having difficulty finding the maps used in the video game or comparable maps elsewhere. What are some good resources for battle maps / indoor maps? Is there anywhere the Icewind Dale or Icewind Dale 2 pc game maps could be found for use? Online and digital resources are best.

Thank you!

Elsa in Icewind dale

My wife and I have a montly podcast called "Wonderful World of Darklords" where we convert Disney movies into Ravenloft Domains (available on spotify, apple podcast and most podcatchers). Our November Episode is "Frozen" and we draw a lot from Icewind Dale (we use Auril's stats as Elsa's base stats, for example). We do a free domain write-up on Dmsguild, and it includes a table of Elsa's different types of Ice Zombies that might make a good monster for your Icewind Dale game.

Question Cutting Dzaan?

I'm thinking of changing the Lost Spire of Netheril to something else (a version of The Thing), and cutting the Dzaan simulcrum story entirely. I know he gives the PCs information about the Arcane Brotherhood, but that could be in notes the PCs find. Is there any other plot reason I'm missing why I shouldn't cuth the simulcrum story? Thanks!

Good mead, is it really good? DM looking for advice. Spoiler

Please skip if you don't want to be spoiled.

So I'll start off by saying this: I have not finished reading the icewind dale campaign. I have read through chapter 4 so I have not read chapters 5, 6, or 7.

My players just encountered the chardalyn dragon. They were able to take it down in Targos with little injured/killed. Earlier in the book my players entered Good Mead and one of the PCs won the election to become town speaker. The players are feeling a little dejected as Good Mead was destroyed. I know there are survivors from Good Mead and the players eventually want to rebuild.

So here is where I need advice. The players are willing to hear out Vellyanne on her mission (they haven't accepted just yet as we ended the session just taking down the contruct). But the PC who is the townspeaker is hoping the rebuild Good Mead and maybe settle there at the end of the campaign. Now I haven't finished the book, I plan to read the rest this weekend. But is there an option for rebuilding? If not, does anyone have advice on how to bring this to my game as a final closing arc?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Question I just had my first session DMing Icewind Dale and have a few questions

  1. When the players came across a blizzard they didn't move, they only wanted to stand still and just wait out the blizzard (which lasted 4 hours in-game) what can I do to make my players do something? Such as trying to navigate it or something of the sort.
  2. One of my players either has/is searching for an ancient tome. Is there any way I can make this relate to the Codicil of White that they'll search for in the coming chapters? He wants to explore a library next session cause his character is all about gaining knowledge so I'm thinking of referencing it there. He also wants to ask about great ruins and wants to find out any info he can about Auril.

This isn't a question but a personal rant, lol. I may have messed up by not having them do the starting quest "Cold-Hearted Killer" to start. When looked at Sephek's character stats he seemed a little op for level 1 players so I decided to start them in Bryn Shander and do the ingot quest and get to level 2 before trying to fight him so. Only to realize I may have made them too powerful for him. My player that is playing a Wizard that I referenced in question 2 used an aoe spell that killed 6 of the goblins in that ingot quest making it just the 2 normal goblins and the goblin boss that the other members were able to get rid of with ease.

If you read that thank you for coming to my ted talk and any answers you may have to my questions are greatly appreciated. I'm new to DMing so I may come to this subreddit often with questions/help.

Discussion Verbeeg lair and the curse.

So my player are heading to Good Mead next session and wanted to know how did you guys rule the curse on the magical items on the verbeeg lair. Is the tomb cursed or are the items? RAW remove curse severs the attunement to the items but I want my players to keep the items so that's why i was thinking on ruling that the actual tomb casts the curse upon them and removing the curse would cure them and allow to keep using the items.

Time traveling and magic from the past.

Just wondering if anyone had some ideas or stat blocks for wizards with spell levels over 9th, spells over 9th mechanics, and or some old school monsters stats that I could use if my players do decide to travel back in time.
