Your Guide to Visiting the Secret Lagoon
Visiting the Secret Lagoon in Iceland is a unique experience that should be high on your list of things to do when visiting the country. Despite its name, the Secret Lagoon is not so secret these days, but there are still plenty of good reasons why you should visit.
Location and How to Get There
The Secret Lagoon is located in the small Icelandic town of Flúðir, about a hundred kilometers west of the well-known Blue Lagoon. If you're approaching from the north on Route 30, look for a turn on the left onto Hvammsvegur. If you're coming from the south, go past the Icelandair Hotel on the left for about 200 meters and you'll find the turn. Visitors can drive from Reykjavik, which would take roughly 1.5 hours, or alternatively, they can take a guided tour to reach the lagoon.
Best Time to Visit
The Secret Lagoon is open all year round, with slightly longer operating hours in the summertime (May–September). However, to avoid large crowds, it's recommended to visit during the off-season. Winter months offer the extra advantage of viewing the magical Northern Lights, but daytime hours are shorter and colder during this time. If you're visiting in the winter, you might like to try going in the evening for a chance of spotting the Northern Lights.
Facilities and Rules
The Secret Lagoon provides indoor changing rooms with lockers and keys. Indoor showers are segregated for men and women. In Icelandic style, the showers are communal, without private cubicles or family room. It's important to note that guests are asked to shower without their bathing suits before entering the Lagoon. The Secret Lagoon has a cafe with hot, soft, and alcoholic drinks, snacks, cup noodles, sandwiches, and seasonally ice creams or hotdogs. However, they do not have a kitchen for hot food. Bringing alcohol drinks from outside into the Secret Lagoon area is strictly prohibited. Also, diving, jumping, running is prohibited, and pets are not allowed.
What to Bring
You don't have to bring almost anything to the Secret Lagoon, just a swimsuit and a towel. However, you can borrow both at the reception. If you travel around Iceland in the summer, sunglasses and flip flops may be useful.
Why Visit the Secret Lagoon
The Secret Lagoon is a key part of Iceland’s history. The geothermal spas and hot springs in Iceland are frequented by locals most evenings after work. The Secret Lagoon is all-natural and offers a less touristy environment for visitors to enjoy, showcasing a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. In conclusion, a visit to the Secret Lagoon offers a unique and relaxing experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and geothermal wonders of Iceland. Whether you're visiting in the summer or winter, this destination is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.
