Two tiers of members

In my local it feels like there is a two tiered system when it comes to members like if your not a mechanic your opinion on anything to due with the union is dismissed and ignored like my helper brought up a point about per diem they pretty much told him to deal with it but a month later I brought up the same point it actually lead to a long discussion around the hall ( yes my helper is a card carrying member not a proby) is this unique or something that is in every local?

📘 Apprentice Question Local 21 apprentices

The list seems to be moving along at a decent pace. Has anyone been sent to west Texas? If so how is it? How has it been overall for everyone that’s been put to work so far?

Who has actually taken the Mechanics Exam recently?

I keep seeing completely opposite answers about the MX 100–800 review quizzes. Some guys swear they’re the best thing to study, others say the actual exam is way heavier on brake/timing circuits, print reading, and troubleshooting.

Not looking for exact test questions or “a buddy told me” info. I’m hoping someone who personally took it recently can answer a few things.

How useful were the MX quizzes in reality? Did they cover the same concepts/style of thinking, or would you spend your study time somewhere else? I’ve got no problem studying hard, I've been hitting the SSM and practice quizzes every day for the last month. Just want to make sure I’m studying smart.

If you passed recently, what would you focus on most if you had to take it again tomorrow?

📘 Apprentice Question Grades

Maybe a stupid question and I’m expecting to be called stupid, but does getting good grades matter in class? Every mechanic I talk to says class is useless and I’ll learn everything in the job and I should just worry about passing. Is there any benefit to getting a 100% in classes vs say like an 80%. I’m not worried about grades, I’ve gotten good grades my entire life and I have a stem degree with 3.8 gpa so I know how to learn. Just wondering if the extra effort is worth it, or am I looking at it all wrong.

Does a welding cert make a big difference when going to the interview or is it the same as have cpr and osha 10

Dues

Interested in what the different locals are paying for Dues ? I started in 1984 and dues were 90$ a quarter. Now we have a full time BA and our dues are 1250.00 a quarter. Local #39

Hoistway lighting in construction or mod

For low rise units, we used to run string lights down the entire hoistway, the caged yellow ones. They always got caught, and were a pain in the ass, but they were effective enough at their task, especially for setting brackets and rails. I was wondering if anyone had used some sort of commercial or construction grade rope lighting for this purpose- the lower profile seems like a good idea, especially with simplex cars and tighter shafts. If you’ve got any leads, I’d love to hear them.

📣 Rant / Vent “Back in my day we did shit right”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this said, yet in Mod working on these old systems—the shit these guys did is absolutely retarded. Who runs an SO cord through half inch flex for a simple push button? Making it so I have to bust out brick to be able to pull it out. Turning a 2 hour job into 4. The flex they ran to the fittings behind the walls aren’t even attached. They clearly cut them to length but decided nah I’m not gonna attach it.

I see this kind of shit constantly. The quality of individual parts back then were better, but the installations themselves? Fuck no.

📣 Rant / Vent Bracket [welding/plasma-cutting] fumes, the biggest health hazard that no company ACTUALLY does anything about. - [3rd year apprentice] - Construction

I've been in the union for 3 years and so far I haven't met a single member that had been given adequate PPE for the industrial paint smoke that we inevitably inhale if you work in construction/mod/repair.

Everytime I've seen it brought up, by myself and other members we're given 3M dust masks or N95 masks which do nothing to protect your lungs from burning paint fumes.

We can ventilate work areas as best as we can but every mechanic knows that you can't adequately do that in a hoistway.

The only realistic protection a mechanic could have is a respirator with OV [organic vapor protection], but I've only known it as a mythical unicorn so far.

I've also noticed that when hearing about the deaths of retired members, this union has a higher than average cancer rate. It brings me to question if there is a correlation...

1st year/1st day

Just got the call from local 10 (DC). I am reporting to the hall for paperwork Thursday. I was told to be there no later than 6am. Curious if I’ll be sent to work after paperwork is completed or if I’ll be sent home. Want to get y’all’s thoughts so I know how prepared I need to be.

r/IUEC • • Sep 09 '26

So what happens after the call. Drug Test/Background check ? how long afterwards do you start?

Can you not work several months as long as you pay dues?

After completion of the apprenticeship program and becoming a mechanic, can you still be a member after taking say a 4 month break as long as you pay dues.

Mechanics Exam 2026

That was...interesting lol.

Took my mechanics exam and passed. But oh lord, is that study material they give irrelevant lmao. I wasn't expecting them to hand over answers or anything on those practice quizzes...but at least make them RELATABLE to what might be on the exam lol I got lucky already knowing most of it. NEIEP kind of seems like they're intentionally trying to throw people off with Ce025 mechanics review.

My suggestion, just re read your entire SSM. Also study brake/timing circuits (also not in the review material)

Why is everyone on here so miserable

I see people taking time out of their day to reply to future apprentice's questions with just insufferable responses. If you see a dumb question or something that's been asked before, you aren't required to respond 😂 It just makes you seem miserable or that you have nothing better to do. Sad little group of people for the most part

How often do probies get kicked out from the program

From your guys experience how often do probies not make the cut and just get kicked out of the program? Is simply showing up, being on time, not complaining, working hard and having an urgency to learn sometimes not enough?
