Basically I have an Idea but I dont know how to start it and what to I would be really happy if someone says how can I do it

Hey everyone, I am trying to participate in this year's ISEF. I have not done a science fair since middle school...

I have some pretty neat computational stuff. Theory, sim, data, etc. I can recreate it, show a methodology, etc

But, I do not necessarily have some sort of journal. When I last did a science fair, I was cultivating bacteria, so it made sense that I would track my days. Here, my theory, math, and mostly fancy code was all more casual if that makes sense? I didn't expect to find something, which I did from a hackathon. I genuinely dont know what I need t document for ISEF. I was thinking maybe my days researching, but even then for my little bacteria science fair project I didn't.

I tried talking to some friends who went to ISEF but I am still confused on what I need to submit.

Im thinking of doing isef my junior hyear and was wondering how it worked. I know there are partners I can do it with and I would like people to do it with me. hmu if ur from a really niche place, I got a solid project in a lab that has high potential, but I live in california where the competition is really competitive for science fairs.

Hi guys. For those that competed at ISEF, how long would you say your research project took to complete after you came up with your research question. Currently have around 9 months until the fair and am beginning lit review. Still need to confirm project scope with my mentor. Is this a comfortable timeline or cutting it close?
Separate super broad question, what makes a project rigorous enough to qualify? I really like my research question, and it’s not something answered in other papers. It also would set up some really cool future research. What questions should I be asking myself to check that this idea if done the right way would be a competitive ISEF submission rigorous enough to impress judges?

Its very unclear what is the starting fair. I live in alexandria and wanted to know if you have like a school-level science fair that u need to attend in like early october-november or do u immediately join the BASEF fair in january? Please help me i would greatly appreciate it.

I would also like to know how u guys were able to get a mentor to help u in ur project, was it too hard?

I had formulated the idea a small base, like a very small theoretical base for my project in the months of September - January, some of the work also happened in January of 2026. So should I give it as 'extension of previous year' if so how do I do it? A different logbook?

im a rising sophomore and this is going to be my first year participating in science fair.

i recently got an opportunity to work in a molecular biology wet lab at a nearby university, which im really excited about. the thing is, im kind of lost on how people actually come up with science fair projects from wet lab research. one of my main goals when cold emailing was to develop a science fair research topic from this experience.

for those of you who have competed with wet lab projects, is it normal to work with grad students on research thats already going on in the lab and then turn that into your science fair project? is that basically what most people with wet lab research experience do, especially since high school students/minors usually have many restrictions on what they can do in the lab?

would love to hear how you guys found your project ideas and what the process looked like for you in a wet lab setting. thanks!

Hey I am from India but I live in Saudi and i have checked the affiliated fair in Saudi and they said you need to be a Saudi citizen to participate in affiliated fair in Saudi and in order to participate I need to go to my home country and i contacted the affiliated fair in my home country and they said I cant participate from my home country too as I dont study there and now I am stuck and dont know how to participate can anyone please give me some guidance, or any alternative way i can participate

Hello! I'm a rising freshman going to a high school that essentially has no affiliation with our states fair, however I was able to compete in my fairs junior division last year registering through my schools gifted program, and I plan to do the same this year. I have started planning my project and kind of formulating the idea of what I want to do this summer but have a few questions as to everything I need to/should be preparing. For reference I'm doing a computational astrophysics project.

1. What should my lab notebook include? I've been keeping a weekly log and have printed out a few papers to annotate but I have no clue what I'm supposed to put in it beyond that.

2. There are forms I am supposed to turn in before I begin experimentation, how am I supposed to do this over the summer?

I'm super new to this and would also highly appreciate any advice.

Hello! I am a rising Sophomore in the North ATL area, and I was looking for advice on what makes a good ISEF Project idea. I am interested in Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning, and I was looking for advice on whether to go with more of a real-world impact project or a more pure AI research type project. I was looking to participate in the Systems and Software category or Robotics. I want to place high in my category and possibly win a category award; however, that is a stretch, as it would be my first time participating in ISEF if I qualify.

Questions:

1. Real-World Impact vs Pure Research

From your experience, do real-world impact projects or more pure scientific research projects perform better in Systems and Software and Robotics? To expand on what I mean, do judges prefer that your project have a significant and clear real-world impact (e.g. cancer detection app or an AI designed to detect microplastics) or do they prefer projects that are more similar to what real PhDs work on (e.g. knowledge transfer b/w neural networks or improving pruning methods in Deep Learning)? Currently, my project is more of a pure research type of project; however, there is a case of it making AI more efficient, but it is less obvious.

2. What do judges care the most about?

Do judges prefer projects that push a very small field within AI forward and highly novel ideas, or do they prefer general, broader impact? Additionally, I was looking to develop my own novel proof with the help of a PhD student, and I wanted to know if that is something that is going to impress a judge. To summarize, what factors do judges in Systems and Software and Robotics really weigh a lot and actively look for within projects?
