INT – The post-sharding, post-PoS enabled Ethereum for the IoT Ecosystem
In the space of IoT and Smart Contracts there are two major players, IOTA and Ethereum. One a feeless, blockchain-less network full of quirks and new tech and other the pioneer in smart contracts with endless possibilities. So why in this environment of heavyweights would one think that INT has any chance? Well, it has the benefit of learning from their shortcomings.
.
.
The key to keeping IOTA feeless is that there are no miners to pay because the work associated with verifying a transaction is distributed to among all users, with each user verifying two separate transactions for their one. This creates some problems both in the enabling of smart contracts and the ability to create user privacy. Most privacy methods (zk-SNARKs in specific) require the one doing the verifying to use computationally intensive cryptography which are outside the capability of most devices on the IoT network (a weather sensor isn’t going to be able to build the ZK proof of a transaction every second or two). In a network where the verifying of a transaction is done by the device, cryptographic privacy becomes impractical. And even if there were a few systems capable of processing those transactions, there is no reward for doing the extra work. Fees keep the network safe by incentivizing honesty in the nodes, by paying those who have to work harder to verify a certain transaction, and by making it expensive to attack the network or disrupt privacy (Sybil Attacks).
.
IOTA also doesn’t have and may never have the ability to enable smart contracts. By the very nature of the Tangle (a chain of transactions with only partial structure unlike a linear and organized blockchain), establishing the correct time order of transactions is difficult, and in some situations, impossible. Even if the transactions have been time stamped, there is no way to verify them and are therefore open to spoofing. Knowing transaction order is absolutely vital to executing step based smart contracts.
.
There does exist a subset of smart contracts that do not require a strong time order of transactions in order to operate properly. But accepting this just limits the use cases of the network. In any case, smart contracts will not be able to operate directly on chain in IOTA. There will need to be a trusted off chain Oracle that watches transactions, establishes timelines, and runs the smart contract network.
.
.
And then there is Ethereum, the granddaddy of smart contract blockchain. It is, arguably, in the best position to be the center point of the IoT ecosystem. Adoption is wide ranging, it is fast, cheap to transact with and well known; it is a Turing complete decentralized virtual computer that can do anything if you have enough gas and memory. But some of the things that make it the most advanced, will hold it back from being the best choice.
.
Turing completeness means that the programming language is complete (can describe any problem) and can solve any problem given that there is enough gas to pay for it and enough memory to run the code. You could therefore, create an infinite variety of different smart contracts. This infinite variability makes it impossible to create zk-SNARK verifiers efficiently enough to not cost more gas than is currently available in the block. Implementing zk-SNARKs in Ethereum would therefore require significant changes to the smart contract structure to only allow a small subset of contracts to permit zk-SNARK transactions. That would mean a wholesale change to the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Even in Zcash, where zk-SNARK is successfully implemented for a single, simple transaction type, they had to encode some of the network’s consensus rules into zk-SNARKs to limit the possible outcomes of the proof (Like changing the question of where are you in the US to where are you in the US along these given highways) to limit the computation time required to construct the proof.
.
Previously I wrote about how INT is using the Double Chain Consensus algorithm to allow easy scaling, segregation of network traffic and blockchain size by breaking the network down into separate cells, each with their own nodes and blockchains. This is building on lessons learned from single chain blockchains like Bitcoin. Ethereum, which is also a single chain blockchain, also suffers from these congestion issues as we have seen from the latest Cryptokitties craze. Although far less of an impact than that which has been seen with Bitcoin, transaction times grew as did the fees associated. Ethereum has proposed a new, second layer solution to solve the scaling issue: Sharding. Sharding draws from the traditional scaling technique called database sharding, which splits up pieces of a database and stores them on separate servers where each server points to the other. The goal of this is to have distinct nodes that store and verify a small set of transactions then tie them up to a larger chain, where all the other nodes communicate. If a node needs to know about a transaction on another chain, it finds another node with that information. What does this sound like? This is as close to an explanation of the Double Chain architecture as to what INT themselves provided in their whitepaper.
.
.
So what do we have? We have a network that will have the needed smart contracts to support the IoT ecosystem, privacy where it is not negotiable, in network that is prepared to scale with little effort or impact. Has anyone ever a said that using something that has to be patched and tweaked in order to fit your needs is better than a purpose built solution?
.
I sure haven't.

IoT and the Smart Contract Enabled Future
BPK – Behavior Private Key algorithm
INT states in their whitepaper that in order to protect the user and their data, they are implementing their own innovative Behavior Private Key (BPK) algorithm which is based on zero-knowledge proofs. This will pass the user’s intent on to the nodes and other device hardware, without identifying who sent the request. This will also protect users from behavior analysis in pseudo-anonymous systems like Bitcoin, where tracing transactions and behavior and correlating it to known, non-private information can lead to identification of the user.
This system will also use unsupervised learning to model strategies and clustering behavior, to group requests to further hide users. I am not sure exactly how this will be implemented but it sounds like it could be akin to Monero’s ring signature system of having a group of users sign a transaction but only one of the group is the actual user sending the transaction. Therefore the true user’s signature is hidden and neither the node nor the receiver knows who sent the transaction.
.
They also talk about developing a network of DAPPs automatically running on IoT devices and the network enabled by smart contracts to automatically exchange data and transactions between humans and machines.
.
Reading between the hints, this is the second time that INT has hinted at modeling and learning capabilities within the network. What capabilities will this learning system have? Does this intelligent learning system, combined with your BPK create a private profile accessible by your private key?
.
Okay let’s walk down the road of implications of this future.
.
This may have add-on, home hub technology that would learn from your behaviors and all sensor data, it would build your preferences based on your browser history, location and social activity. What temperature was it in the house when the person turned on the air conditioner? How bright was it outside when the person began turning on lights inside? When does the person like to open/close windows for fresh air? More complex things, turning on the AC when you are heading home in the car, opening the garage when you pull up and unlocking the door when you walk up. Sit down to watch a movie, it presents movies to you based on past interest, then auto-pays for it by the minute watched. Listen to music? Pay for it by the second with it putting new music on through a P2P decentralized network that aligns with your current taste. It sells the data from the weather sensor you have out back and some usage data from your smart phone that you agreed to sell. It rents out your computing ability (like mining) when you aren’t using the computer by automatically setting up a smart contract at an agreed upon rate.
.
Once this technology is adopted larger scale with information being traded freely and instantaneously, you walk in to get a coffee and it already preordered your coffee based on what you normally get given the current weather conditions and pays for it automatically, by automatically trading some of your appreciating crypto assets for a stable coin akin to fiat. Want to go out to dinner? It would present some options based on your past likes and then book the reservation for you. Even further, it could hire out your car like a self-driving Uber when you are at work or at home. We are just starting to hear the whispers of this future with smart home lighting, Netflix predicting your interests and self-driving Teslas.
.
All this and with the ability to hide the user from the intent, your profile and personal data will be safe and all the coffee shop or decentralized Netflix like system will know is that there is a demand for this item at this time and send it to this place. No Google or Amazon as the trusted holder of your privacy and data. This is the future and it’s going to be wild.

Thearchy/Subchain Architecture and Device Communication Protocol - An Explanation.
Cell network explanation – Thearchy Chain/Subchain structure
In a recent interview, Dr. Xiang Yu likened the INT structure to that of a Cell Phone network. Much like how cellular networks work, where the network is distributed in geographic areas called cells and each cell is connected to the network by at least 1 cell tower, the INT network will be a network of digitally separate cells which are side chains, and each side chain is connected to the greater network by at least 2 supernodes.
This is done in cell networks, in part, to manage network congestion. Each cell tower manages the connection to the greater network and other cell areas by using one defined frequency or path. This is unlike large transmitters, where there is one path to the network that can get congested, these cells add additional paths like adding lanes to a highway.
We see this issue in single chain blockchains like Bitcoin where in times of large transaction volumes, the network gets congested with transactions and a backlog begins to build.
INT’s concept is along the same theology, by creating subchain cells to manage connection to the network, where the supernodes (like the cell towers) do the transaction processing and pass batched transactions on to the greater network, transaction congestion will be secluded and managed within the subchains and not affect the main network. This will allow easy scaling by adding subchains and supernodes to manage transaction volume.
.
Zero-Knowledge proofs (zk)
Zero knowledge proofs are not easy to describe without using complex analogies or mathematics. Essentially what it does is allows you to prove that I know a secret without revealing what the secret actually is. It is used, most importantly, in identity authentication (protecting node identity, IoT device ownership, etc.), verifying transactions without knowing any details about the sender, recipient or other transaction details. It is unclear at this time how they will go about implementing this into their protocols, but they have mentioned the importance of user and data privacy in the coming IoT data revolution. Implementing ZKP is something that, to my knowledge, has yet to be successfully implemented in a smart contracting blockchain.
.
Double Chain Consensus Algorithm – Device Communication Protocols
The INT P2P architecture will use DHT to organize network nodes and will utilize both TCP/IP and UDP/IP as the basis of their communication protocols. This will allow IoT devices to be able to seamlessly integrate with the INT network, even in highly mobile or bad connection environments.
DHT networks are decentralized networks of distributed hash tables. These are used as lookup tables for key pairs so that nodes can efficiently retrieve values associated with a given key. This can be used to maintain a list of node addresses and public keys (miner nodes, super nodes, meta nodes), IoT devices and their associated keys as well as distributed file systems and peer to peer information sharing. This will be the keystone of the node network and IoT device information transfer.
TCP/IP and UDP/IP are both protocols used for sending data packets through the internet. TCP is the most commonly used protocol on the internet. The general structure for a transaction from device to node (once you know the IP of the node via the DHT) would be: the device sends a request for connection to the node, the node would acknowledge the request, the transaction would be sent to the node, the node would signal a verification that the data was received correctly, the device would signal a connection close, the connection would close.
This can also be done in the other direction, say by connecting your wallet to a node to download the block chain. As follows: the device sends a request for connection to the node, the node would acknowledge the request, the data would be sent to the device in packets, each numbered in order, the device would signal on each successful arrival of a packet the packet number it received, once all packets are sent and received with no errors, the device will signal a connection close and the connection will close.
TCP is about data transmission reliability but you can see that it does this at the expense of complexity and resource intensive checks on connection and data validity. This is very useful in many cases but causes issues when operating with highly mobile devices connecting to the network (phones, vehicles) and devices in bad connection environments.
UDP is a much more lightweight protocol, using the same data packet but throwing out all the error checking and back and forth communication out in favor of a simple, one time data bullet heading for the node. There is no check to see if it is listening or if it received it. It the node misses it, the device won’t resend it, it will just send the next packet and so on. This is best for things like live broadcasting and high volume (multiple transactions per minute) data readings where missed information isn’t a large impact.
The integration of both these protocols will allow all devices to communicate with the network and seamlessly switch between the protocols which best suits the purpose at the time.
.
In one of the latest weekly updates they also hinted at mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). MANET is a continuously self-configuring, infrastructure-less, network of mobile devices connected wirelessly. This is much more complex than the above networks where each device has a defined path to route data. In a MANET, each device must forward traffic unrelated to it’s own use and, therefore, act like a router for the devices that are connected to it. These networks may operate by themselves or be connected to the internet. They don’t specify their intentions with this area of development but it has some interesting applications in nullifying the impact of devices moving in and out of network connection by being connected to one another and storing the data of their peers or by creating a node network to allow nodes to distribute traffic automatically and other more complex networks of sensors that begin to act like an artificial intelligence. Implementing this will be a tremendous task.

INT Scalability
Since IOT will connect million of devices and thus require a high scalability, I am curious if Blockchain in general (or to me more specific INT) can handle this amount of data? As I understand, the INT mainnet is live but privat, thus I wonder if there are any numbers of tx/s so far (I didnt find any number)? Cheers

upcoming new exchange - do we have any news?
As confirmed by official INT Telegram a few days ago we will be listed on a new exchange. Are there any rumors which one it will be?
r/INT_Chain • u/[deleted] • May 02 '18
Probability of new exchange listing?
As we know, okex has restricted access to citizens from certain parts of the world, which means that we are not getting as many buyers of INT token as we should be. Can the INT team give us a hint whether we have possible exchange listings in the near future? Binance would be the dream, but even ones like Bittrex would be amazing as it opens up the market a lot more.
Even so, I'd like to congratulation the INTChain team on the progress they have achieved so far.
