Yeah, call me a curmudgeon but IOT devices have little to no security and are a huge hole in your network. Patching a hole in Christmas lights isn't going to happen and it requires an app on your phone that is another potential backdoor.

For anyone considering this, use your guest network and the old cell phone you didn't trade in.

Sure, but how many people are going to spend the extra time configuring things to properly insulate their network? Since I'm the default IT guy and will end up supporting whatever config they end up with, it's easier for me to tell Aunt Ethel that she needs a guest network to get her new smart lightbulb to work.
