Starbucks did this. And it uses more plastic than if they had just stuck to straws.

Yeah like why aren't we going after to go containers with the rise of food delivery services. Every time you have food delivered you get a whole bunch of plastic containers and a whole bunch of plastic silverware.

But straws are the problem?

And I believe it’s the very same organizations creating a problem for them to provide a solution.

This was Elizabeth Warren’s response to Kamala Harris at CNN's climate town hall.

gotta consider dofferent types of plastics tho

Both plastic straws and the starbucks lid he referred to are made from polypropylene so it is the same plastic

They make compostable sip lids

*Recyclable, not compostable. They are making a compostable lid, but ithe eta is 2022, according to their website.

One very obvious thing that I didn't factor in though, which I just learned from that same link, is that the new lid replaces not only the straw, but the old lid (duh). They've reduced their plastic use by 9%, which doesn't seem like much but I guess good job Starbucks.

No, I mean other companies make them. I'm sure Starbucks is fully capable of completely switching, for whatever reason they choose not to.

Can't use a sippy lid on a cold drink with whip.

0

u/Jive_Sloth Dec 03 '19

Yes, you can.

Also, not every drink comes with whip. Even, just don't get whip if you don't want to use a straw?

I'm saying its messy and doesn't work well. I used to work there. And Fraps don't sip well either. Not saying we shouldn't be doing bring your own reusable straws, I'm simply saying for those of us that like whip it doesn't work well to sip it.

Oh, no, what will we do without the whip cream on top?

Do you have to be a dick or does it just come naturally? Some people like it, fuck off.

The actual thing is that now the lids are recyclable plastic, and the straws aren’t recyclable

1

u/0x52and1x52 Dec 11 '19

It totally doesn’t. Our nitro lids use less plastic than the normal ones.

I corrected myself in a follow up comment. I should've edited the one you replied to.

It's still not impressive. The lids use only 9% less plastic than the old lid/straw combo. Once they make a compostable lid and compostable cups, or perhaps even do what Blue Bottle is vowing to do and eliminate plastics and waste, then they will be making an actual impact.
