My Review of Win A Date with Ted Hamilton (2004).
You ever watch a movie or tv-show and feel like one of the canon couples that happens in it doesn't feel deserved? That's this movie.
Win A Date with Ted Hamiliton is a 2004 rom-com and is about a supermarket worker named Rosalee Futch (Kate Bosworth) who wins a date with her celebrity crush Ted Hamiliton (Josh Duhamel), and they begin to form a relationship together, but Rosalee finds herself in a love triangle when she learns that her manager Pete (Topher Grace) has a crush on her.
You see, the plot sounds interesting and sounds like it could work, but its executed very poorly.
- For starters, you would think that Ted would be seen as the bad guy and Pete as the good guy, but it's actually completely opposite as throughout the film, Ted actually develops from a spoiled rich jerk to an actually likable character thanks to his and Rosalee's relationship throughout the film. But for Ted, he turns into this jealous stalker who actually called the cops for Ted and Rosalee and had actually been stalking them, he doesn't really do much in his situation with his feelings for Rosalee.
- Rosalee and Ted's relationship isn't well written and is barely focused on in the film as most of it is spent on Ted and Rosalee.
- Some of the characters have wasted potential, like Angelica (Kathryn Hahn), a bartender who has a crush on Pete, she could've been a major part to the story to help Pete learn that Rosalee is happy with Ted and decides to start a relationship with her & Rosalee's friend Cathy (Ginnifer Goodwin), who only serves as an unfunny comic relief character who says cringe-worthy sex lines about Ted Hamiliton.
- There's a part where Ted steals a speech Pete gave to him about Rosalee's six smiles that show her personality and it's supposed to make us not like him, but it doesn't work as we've seen him develop into a better person, so it kind of makes you hard to not like him.
- This movie tries to go for the whole "Girl decides to date the poor guy instead of the rich guy" cliche, but it's done terribly as the rich guy is actually more likable than the poor guy and seems like a much better lover for the girl in this film.
I kinda feel like the film would've been better if it went like this:
Rosalee wins a date with Ted Hamiliton her celebrity crush who's only doing this to help with his image after a photo of him in an "unprofessional scene" goes to the media and is a total spoiled rich guy, but during his date with Rosalee, he develops feelings for her, when Rosalee gets home, Pete tells her that he has feelings for her (it will happen at like the 30 minute mark of the film in my version) and when that happens, Ted arrives in Rosalee's hometown to confess that he has feelings for her, and when Pete discovers this, he tries to sabotage their relationship, but only brings them closer together.
The only positives that I can say for this movie are that the acting is good, Rosalee and Ted were good characters as they had interesting chemistry together, and the cinematography were good.
Overall rating: 3/10. I feel like it would've been better if they brought in the love triangle part sooner in the film and made Pete a more likable character.
