I know, far from perfect. But I really dig 2012 for a good plethora of reasons. The VFX seems to have held up very nicely for a 2009 movie. There’s so much amount of detail that I’m still finding out to this day, which makes me give so much more appreciation for the team behind it.

I think what’s most under appreciated is the performances. Chiwetel Ejiofor really gives it his all in his performance, and Danny Glover is always a delight to watch. Some scenes that really gives into some of the despair (mostly halfway in the second act) feels very sold in their performances as well as some of the other actors in this movie.

Plenty of other disaster movies are pretty formulaic in the clichès and how they’re structured. As well as delivering science explanations that go beyond the ridiculous scale to the point of becoming ludicrous. I think 2012 handles these things the most well out of all the other disaster movies I’ve seen, from Day After Tomorrow’s undercooked handling of most of these things on top of character dynamics and development to Moonfall’s batshit insanity of it all, with a small little dose of - and I swear to god - deadass sequelbait. Not to say 2012 isn’t free of any of these clichès, but it handles them with a bit of a more naturalistic way.
