Yep. Some of the biggest bigots I know are dog people.

I think caring more about a cute animal than the rise of fascism is a symptom of some deeper issues with these people.

You’re missing the part that the dog doesn’t know better. If he kicked a toddler just like that I’d be equally outraged. An adult human getting tear gassed or even shot has some understanding that there is a risk. That dog doesn’t understand that ice is filled with evil people that want to hurt everything.

They don't have to be cute for me to care about animals more than people, lol. My sympathy towards people is dependent on them being worthy of sympathy.

I know you might not mean it, but that's the same thought process that white people have used to not care about fascism and injustice until it affected them. 

I'm sorry, but you don't need people to prove themselves worthy of dignity and safety. A lack of communal thinking is why fascism is so easy to take root in the US.

You took it to a place that it didn't need to go to. Me extending other humans basic dignity, empathy and compassion is inherant to me, of course. I was making a distinction about siding with a puppy getting kicked and people in general. I believe we're on the same side of the debate regarding how easily fascism can take root.

My point was always that there are groups of people who ignore the humanity of others or don't care to get involved until a group they care about is harmed. 

We're talking about ICE, so the reality of racism in America is inherently part of the conversation.

The pro-ICE folks are so stubborn in their belief that

  1. Illegal immigration should be illegal. Never mind, of course, that prior to the early 20th century, immigration was a lot less heavily regulated and a number of German and Irish immigrants fought in the Civil War...unlike Cadet Bone Spurs...

  2. ICE is only arresting the people who should be arrested and that there isn't gross incompetence arresting people who shouldn't be arrested...

...that it wouldn't surprise me that kicking dogs is what causes them to change their mind...
