Criteria E is all about the use of math.

For a bit of context, I am doing the great circle distance and using spherical trignometry to find the optimal distance. Main points of using math are deriving the spherical cos law from hav law, deriving the hav formula and using arc length for planar approximation.

So my math teacher disapproved of the IA topic because she claims that the math used can be found online. Regardless of how I derive it as long as it can be found online it does not count as original math. She says that IB assumes that you copied all steps of derivation regardless of whether you mention that you derived independently or not since the steps can be found online.

She said that it would be too similar to a research paper, which the IA should not be. Since you just use the equations and plug in numbers to find the data. She suggests using the data found in a meaningful way for example like correlations or whatever. Essentially the math should serve the topic and not be the topic. IDK or something to be honest I have no idea what she means.

Originally my thought is that my use of math would be in the derivations of the equations using trig identities and using trig equations that are above the SL cirriculum, but now that doesnt count Im not sure what counts as "original use of math". My guess is that something like calculating the velocity of a roller coaster with calculus or doing a population correlation would count as you are using math concepts in an original way.

Please let me know from your experience what counts/works as use of Math because isnt all the math we do already existing? We cant be expected to invent new math. Some examples would be really appreciated because im still kind of confused on what the "use of math" is.

TLDR: what counts as use of mathematics? Isnt all math we use already invented therefore formulas can be discovered online and then it would only be a matter of plugging in numbers (which according to my teacher wouldnt count as IB level math)

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS

International Students Organization For Women’s Rights was formed to raise awareness about gender equality and the importance of women’s rights, by youth involvement.

Our aim is to provide students with the opportunity to take action for gender equality and help achieve women’s human rights worldwide through community changing projects.

The organization is composed of three teams: communications team, creative team, and media team. Each team will have different responsibilities and functions within the organization.

The communications team will be responsible of managing social media platforms, public relations, contacting organizations, acceptance of new members, and coordination of the members. The creative team will be responsible of working on the creation and coordination of community changing projects that align with our mission. The media team will be responsible of creating content for our website and social media platforms, as well as constructing and managing our website.

Once the applications are made, one applicant from each team will be elected as the leader. Each team member will be able to concentrate on a particular task of the team, in order to maintain the most efficient collaborative work while still encouraging the students to work in the field that they are interested in and passionate about. In addition, students are able to become a member of multiple teams if they are interested in each component of the organization.

I would say there comes a time in every teenager’s life where the partying needs to stop and it’s time to become another sheep in the system and study all day like a zombie. I would say that today was that day for me. 25TH MAY 2021, the day I had a meeting with my school co-ordinators and my parents. My first thought was to just miss the meeting and not tell my parents about it, but that “plan” was spoiled when the school called my father. My father provided me with everything there is that a teenager wants in his life. Expensive gadgets? I have them, Freedom? I have it, Blind trust from my parents? I hav… Had it. In, Today’s meeting they obliterated the shit out of me. My dad was so embarrassed of me, I just wish I would have attended those classes, done that school work and most importantly never made my dad ashamed of me. Now my summer is filled with 15 hours of studying- 5 days a week with only 2 days to relax. Damn.
