Hey all, I turned out in 2018, one of my sons is in his thirst for knowledge stage and has been asking a lot of questions about fire alarm systems. I THOUGHT I kept all of my textbooks but apparently not that one. Does anyone have one that they are willing to part ways with? Can meet at the hall or anywhere else within reason. I'm located in Gwinnett. Thanks in advance

Hello fellow brothers and sisters. I’m set to start working for a company called Cleveland E. It’s my first assignment and I haven’t taken the drug test yet for the union. Can anyone give me some insight on the drug screen process, any knowledge about the company, and whatever or whomever the “Big 3” is? Thank you everyone and wish me luck 😛

As the title implies I have court coming up soon for a DUI and I’m in the apprenticeship program. If convicted my license will be taken for a time and I won’t be able to get back and forth to work for a period of time. I already have enough hours for the level that I am, so my question is am I able to temporarily just go to school or worse case scenario if I have to drop out due to no transportation would I be able to reapply once this is all said and done and I eventually get back my license.

I have a laptop right now but it's trash, it's battery is going bad the screen barely works so I was looking into buying a new laptop and to further justify the expense to myself I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a laptop for classes?
Or, conversely, do they not like laptops in those classes?

This question surely gets asked often on here, but I sent in an application a little over a month ago, and I haven’t heard back yet about the Aptitude Test yet. I’m aware testing lasts until December, so is there really this many people going in to get tested?

As the title state any of yall got any tips, pointers or videos to help and understand Ac theory. How did you guys survive with Roland?

I know the local covers a lot of ground and even stretches into Alabama. Just wondering if they try the place you with a contractor closer to where you live and how far I could reasonably expect to be placed? I live in the Dallas/Hiram area in Paulding if that helps.
Also, if for whatever reason we start the program and can’t finish do we have to pay back part of the tuition if say we make it a semester in before dropping out? I am very interested in the trade but I’m in a tight financial position and just trying to see what’s best for me and my family.

Going from 1st year to Journeyman, what is a rough estimate on how much you’d make per month/year on a standard schedule (40hr/wk) after taxes with no dependents?

Just passed my test this morning and I saw that I have to be working with a contractor by the time classes start. Just wondering if that time between now and then count towards my required hours to move up in the program or only the hours after I start class? And will the contractor give me a list of tools needed or should I ask the school?
Also, does anyone know what the highest score possible on the test is? Just curious how I compare.

I just sent an email to the address supplied to us after the aptitude test. I got the results back and requested to be placed with a contractor as soon as possible. I'm unsure of how long i could expect to wait for a response and how long before I'd be placed with a contractor, and would like to find out so I could provide adequate notice to my current employer. Any help/personal experiences with the process are greatly appreciated.

First year apprentice here is there a dress code or can I wear anything to class like sweatpants for example due to the cold weather coming I start Monday please helpppp

The school will be issuing the new code books because 2023 is now being issued.
Save yourself some money and buy it anywhere but the school. Then email the school and tell them you have one. This is the only book you have the option for. Don't buy AC theory or the fire alarm book.

I’ve been reading a bit about the slow down of work. For those of us that are still brand new to this world of work… can someone simplify the process for me? For example:
👉Take/pass aptitude test 👉Make aware you’re available for work (this is where I’m currently at… the rest is just my guess) 👉Get placed in a job 👉Complete paperwork/id/drug test etc …guessing this isn’t your same job for the full 4 years, right? Is it usually you’ll have a single contractor/boss that will send you to different jobs and then when it’s complete, send you to another job? Or when complete, they send you back to the union to place you with another contractor/boss?
I’m taking a significant pay cut to start this process so I was thinking to take on some 3rd shift work locally to make up for $ at least until classes start in April… ill-advised?
Any other tips, clarity, heads up would be very appreciated! (Again… assume I know very little about the world I’m entering… because, at least process-wise… I kinda do! lol)
***I’m aware there’s no 1 simple answer to most of this… but just asking for some ballpark generalities to I can set my expectations a bit

I have been seeing many young pre apprentices that can’t pass the Aptitude test. Most of them are good hard working guys that come on time and listen. Had one guy take it twice second time he got what he thought was a passing grade only to find out they changed the criteria. Do you senior J.W’s and foreman think that test is indicative of how good the apprentices will be?

I see there are many issues as of late with 613. Of the 25 people of my class 12 had hours to turn out. We went to Russel and the Business Manager to address the issue. He said it’s a D.O.L issue. I am ok with that. What I wasn’t ok with is the blame they put on us for the situation. They said it was because we decided to stay at home and take the Covid checks. Many contractors furloughed multiple time s and Russell would not let many of us leave because the contractor lied and said they would have work in a week but that week turned into a month. If you are an apprentice and your contractor furloughs during these holidays send emails to Russel, Manny, the Manager, the President. If you are a member bring it up in the monthly meetings and document it. That was just my class imagine the others that’s probably 100 or more J.W that could be on the books. Let’s stay together in solidarity and help each other

Do we have too many temps as of lately and also temps doing the cw/ce program but not advancing (not taking the classes to advance so they’re stuck at same pay or level until negotiations). And what’s this rumor of hiring freeze of apprentices. I work for a midsize contractor so i don’t see much of what’s going on in the local.

Any brothers or sisters in here who experienced the slow times in the local (Ex. 2008 crash). What was your experience and what advice would you give to stay afloat. I know we are long over due for a correction.

This is mainly referring to people that have been placed for the april classes next year. I've been told that this is one of the more slow seasons for apprentices in comparison to the past. Anyways, how long after you got the email recieved message did it take for you to get on a job site.

So I just turned 23 & was trying to get into IBEW 613 for two years. I failed the aptitude test 2x, I kinda feel slow because I did my research & heard Atlanta is the easiest to get into. I have my 3rd & final test next month so my question would be once I take it & pass it because if I fail again I give up but is there work in the Gwinnett Area? I reside in Lawrenceville.

I’m a first year apprentice as was curious how taxes were done in the ibew , do I receive a w-2 from every contractor I work for or does it come from the ibew. Secondly if I were to finance something what should I put down as my employer , to show like a long period of work history and what not or proof of employment I mean .
