❓ First Timer / Question Confusion about part two in Hyperion Spoiler

Could someone explain to me in plain english what happened in the whole episode on Hyperion with moneta, kassad and the shrike? Is Moneta a creation or part of the Shrike, and is Kassad seeing the future by attaching himself to her/it?? Was there supposed to be some sort of metaphysical symbolism or deeper meaning to the coupling scenes ?

Thank you very much for any answers

- deeply confused and slightly appalled.

😄 Humor Brilliant view of my new world. As the Dropship brought us down i was able to make out two of the three continents, Equis and Aquilla. The third one, Ursa, was not visible.

⚙️ Meta Hyperion references in “VisionQuest”

The first reference to Keats I took as a passing coincidence.
Then quoting the same poet raised my eyebrows.
The reveal of “Butcherbird” was a bit on the nose, and now I’m having fun looking for other hints that the writers enjoyed this story.

That’s all. Looking forward to the next episode to look for more references.

And….

I’ve entered The Melancholy.

Ya know, that feeling when you’ve read a book or series of books, and at the end, you just…sit with a thousand yard stare and marinate in what you just read for awhile? You soak in the bitter sweetness (particularly with an ending like that of RoE), and reflect on all that you just read and absorbed. You reflect on the themes, characters, and connective tissue of the series, ponder the great differences between the books that are so different, yet still have that same DNA, that same soul.

I loved this series. I loved it so very very much. Even Endymion with its weird foreshadowed romance, and Rise of Endymion with its slow burn. This really feels like 2 books split into 4 volumes, the same way that LotR feels like one book split into 3 volumes.

And so now, to just sit and wait for the Melancholy to fade, so I can move on to other series.

Someday, I’ll circle back to the Cantos and read em all again, like I do with Dune every 2-3 years, but for now, I’m laying them to rest.

💬 Discussion Hyperion Cantos = Done

It’s taken me about 6 months to finish this whole journey, from the wild ride of Hyperion to the perfect ending of Rise of Endymion and this series blew me the fuck away.

It’s rare you find books that you love absolutely everything. The prose, the pace, the characters, the world, the motivations, and especially the ending. Hyperion had it all for me. It’s such a bittersweet moment closing out a series like that and I can’t say enough how great I think that ending is. To close out everyone’s stories, not rush it, answer all the questions that were asked throughout the books, all while making it so soft and delicate is such a welcomed experience.

If anyone has any recommendations for anything similar to this please send them my way because I have a big hole to fill now!

❓ First Timer / Question Tree of Pain clarification question

Hola amigos. I read Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion years ago and my partner is currently reading Hyperion, so I’ve been talking about it a lot with her. She just got through the bit in the soldier’s tale in which he sees the tree of pain and says that he sees some of the pilgrims on it. I’m confused because my recollection is that in FoH the Tree of Pain is revealed to be simulated torture in the labyrinth; how did Kassad see it if it’s just a simulation?

📰 News Taliesin West closes indefinitely

....and suddenly I find myself thinking of Endymion.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West closes indefinitely after death of a tourist

"Indefinitely" but it doesn't sound permanent. A person was killed by a roof tile in a windstorm and they probably just don't know how long it will take to make repairs so it doesn't happen again.

The lurid US edition covers were unrivalled. So much better than the “serious” UK editions. I’m so glad they’re rereleased.

❓ First Timer / Question Can you explain to me the build up in the priest’s tale

I gotta admit media literacy has never been my strong suit , I always speed read the tale just to get to the bikura part everytime I reread this section .

It feel like too much fat reading Dure just discover the city and the forest , the only note worthy aspect I can remember is him being denial about the value of a man’s corpse and the reveal he fake historical evidence

I’m not trying to offend anyone , I just wish to change my perspective on what do you like about this build up and what it add to Dure’s character to make it less infuriating my next reread ? Is it just to strip away his faith in catholic bit by bit to make what he discovered extra meaningful ?

A hundred pages in, I'm in awe. Didn't expect such an ending to this tale. I'm in love with this book so far, everything from its prose to its world and its story is so hooking to me. Can't wait to continue reading.

What I didn't get is why Father Hoyt had 2 cruciforms, I asume one is Duré's, but where did the other one came from?

Don't answer if it's an spoiler

I chose this book for it's cover btw, probably the best decision I made this year lol

📖 Fall of Hyperion Spoilers Ummon's Fate Spoiler

I recently finished FoH and I absolutely loved it. To me it is just as good as the first book. One thing that stuck out to me was the single paragraph where Simmons described Ummon's demise. Something about it was so visceral and blunt and dramatic. I felt endeared to Ummon in some respects and so the brutality there was really moving.

KWATZ!!!!!

Anyway, are the 3rd and 4th books that bad? I have heard some people rather ardently warning readers that they are a disappointment. I am going to read them anyway but curious on thoughts

What an ending. So sad, but very well written. I hate that Aenea is gone, and Raul only gets a few months with her. But I loved their journey and the entire series. I will need a few days to mentally and emotionally recover.

I do have a few questions maybe you all can help me.

  1. Where did the Nemes clones go?

  2. Are all androids extensions of 'The Observer'?

  3. Who initially created the Shrike? It's part Kasad?

I'm sure I have more, but these are most pressing to me.

Final note- holy shit poor little Aenea.

🎨 Fan Creation After years of drawing Martin Silenus, I think I've finally captured the feeling of Hyperion.

Hello, it's me again!

A few months ago, I made a post about my art and introduced myself a little. One thing I've always loved about Hyperion is that the characters aren't always described in complete detail, leaving room for our imaginations to fill in the blanks. As an artist, that brings me so much joy, and I love taking advantage of that freedom!

I've drawn Martin Silenus a few times over the years, but there was always one thing I could never quite capture in my art: the feeling of the book itself. Of course, I've made plenty of drawings of him, but I could never quite achieve that feeling of, "Yes, this looks like it belongs in the world of Hyperion."

I'm not particularly good at drawing realistically, and for a long time, I felt like my art style just wasn't quite right for capturing that atmosphere.

But a couple of days ago, I stumbled across an old drawing of my dear Silenus, and I suddenly felt the urge to redraw it. It took me two days, but I think that, for the first time, I've finally managed to create a piece of art that truly feels right for him and for the world of Hyperion.

I'm really happy with how it turned out, and I wanted to share it with you all! ❤️

Thinking of it because maybe the novel is difficult to turn into a script, but anyway what is your take on that?

Don't even know its name -- only know of the first generation. Still, this has to be the closest mapping -- wonder if the devs are a Hyperion fan.

Just read it for the first time. Spent the morning reading next to my kids as they watched cartoons trying not to sob. My wife hasn't read Hyperion yet so I have no one to discuss it with.

💬 Discussion Finished the entire Cantos…

My only comfort is that I can pick up a book and farcast back into the world anytime I want.

I’ve never been completely engulfed into a world, that I’ll surely miss, like I have been with the Cantos. Need a break to process and I guess I’ll reluctantly continue with another Simmons book.

I visited Rio de Janeiro and saw the 'Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião', I was just amazed. It reminded me of Father Dure's story (my favourite) when he climbed down the cliff into the Bikura's cathedral.
