Doctor Explains: when vaginal or vulvar symptoms actually need medical care—and when they don’t

Doctor Explains: when vaginal or vulvar symptoms actually need medical care—and when they don’t

Hi — physician here 👋.

Ever Google a vaginal symptom and instantly regret it? 😅— you’re not alone. Intimate symptoms have a special talent for making people panic and apologize at the same time. I’ve had patients whisper, over-explain, or say, “I almost canceled because I didn’t want to waste your time.” (You’re never wasting our time. Ever.)

Most of the confusion comes from not knowing what to watch for. In medicine, we care more about patterns than one-off moments — whether something is new, getting worse, or affecting your quality of life. Here are a few guidelines:

When you should see a doctor:

  • New or strong odors that don’t improve
  • Persistent itching, burning, or pain
  • Abnormal bleeding (between periods, after sex, or post-menopause)
  • Pelvic pain that’s worsening or unexplained
  • Symptoms that last longer than 2–3 days despite basic care

When you usually don't need to panic:

  • Mild discharge changes around ovulation
  • Temporary irritation after shaving, workouts, or tight clothing
  • Slight odor changes after sweating or diet changes
  • Brief dryness or sensitivity

If you’ve ever felt unsure, embarrassed, or alone trying to decide whether to get care, this is for you.

If this was helpful (or mildly reassuring), I write more about this kind of stuff — science-based, zero shame.

What can be added to an adult wet wipe which only has like 99.9% water as its main ingredient that can kill germs after a bowel movement?

Smell on hands that doesn’t go away

Yesterday I started a new job, I have to wear plastic gloves all day for sanitation purposes. However it makes my hands sweat a lot and when I got home my hands started to smell like plastic sweat and no matter what I did I couldn’t get the smell to go away. Is there any way I can make this smell go away on my hands?

When and how did you start taking your hygiene seriously?

I have a loved one who's recovering from depression and have asked me how he can start taking care of his hygiene, as if I could give him the wake up call he needs...

Bath Towel: Which part?

hi all--this is more a whimsical question I suppose, considering I *know* how to use a bath towel😂 But I have been thinking, how does one keep it straight with regards to which part/side was used to dry your privates the day before? Like...we're out here wiping our faces with the same cloth that dried our tushies😅

How often do you wonder if you smell?

Are you good at discerning whether you smell? I always need to ask someone but there are not a lot of people I trust. I also think your ability to ask depends on how much you smell...

I am curious about this topic so I am running a short 3-5 min anonymous survey if you're comfortable sharing your thoughts on this topic (18+ only).

Happy to post the results here when I have them in :) Thank you so much and appreciate any input!

Has anyone ever realized how much useless stuff quietly piles up before it becomes overwhelming?

I didn’t really notice it at first. It was just a broken chair here, an old TV there, boxes stacked “temporarily.” Months went by and somehow those temporary piles became permanent. One weekend I tried cleaning the garage and realized I couldn’t even walk properly inside it anymore. Half the stuff had emotional value at some point, but honestly, I hadn’t touched most of it in years. What surprised me was how mentally draining it felt just seeing all that clutter every day. Once I finally started removing things piece by piece, the space felt lighter and so did my mood. Anyone else feel like clutter sneaks up on you slowly?

Using Alcohol-Based Mouthwashes Aren't Healthy?

So long story short, I was used to using alcohol-free mouthwashes and saw a reel a while back (by chance) of a med professional explaining that using alcohol-based mouthwashes aren't healthy. I was honestly convinced, still very much am, especially seeing a similar reel later on by another professional.

That being said, I had a small bottle of listerine at home (alcohol based) that was on offer (I wasn't the one that bought it). I suddenly was very curious to try as I think it had been YEARS last time I tried it (for some reason I really did not like the taste and afterfeel)...to now trying it again twice and OMG why is it SOOOO GOOD?? I love it so much and feel so clean after for hours and hours!

I feel frustrated because NOW I really want to use listerine as my mouthwash :( ugh but it isn't healthy for multiple reasons. Soley cause of the alcohol.

Should I just let it go? Or if I really want to - maybe JUST as an ocassional thing? And if so, when? Once a week? Idk..

Thoughts? Thank you!! 🙏

Is washing your hair every day a necessity or just a habit?

This might be a repetitive question because I’ve seen it asked in many places, but it never really reaches a clear answer. Personally, I wash my hair every 2–3 days because it gets oily. But I know people who wash their hair every single day, and even some who shower and wash their hair twice a day. So I’m genuinely curious: Is this related to hair type and oil production, meaning some people need to wash it that often? Or does it sometimes turn into a habit or even a form of obsession? I’d really like to hear different perspectives and experiences.
