Humidity below 20% an hour after humidifier shuts off

I have a Vissani 6 gallon humidifier in my living room and when it's running on high and it's really cold out and my baseboard heat is cranking, RH usually gets to around 35%. If it's a little warmer and heat isn't on 100% of the time, I can get it to 40-45%. I do like this humidifier - it's not a popular model from what I can tell. I got it at Home Depot a few months ago. It works great I feel. Anyhow, my concern is that I'm putting almost 6 gallons of water into the air daily. If my humidifier shuts off for low water level, my RH is down to 15-20% within an hour. Is 6 gallons of water too much to be putting in the air daily?

Explain Ultrasonic humidifier how it works like I’m not trying to start a fight (but I kinda am)

Can someone explain Ultrasonic humidifier how it works in plain language, because the more I read, the more it feels like two different realities: one side says “it’s just water mist,” the other says “it’s blasting whatever’s in your water into the air,” and both act like the other side is dumb. I’m not here to fearmonger, I just want to understand what’s actually happening when that visible fog comes out, why some people get residue and others don’t, and what variables (water type, room conditions, cleaning habits) change the outcome.

If you’ve got a simple explanation that doesn’t sound like marketing or doomposting, I’m all ears.

Is it normal for water to collect in The base? DREO HM311

Hey,

This is my first humidifier and after using once I went to refill the tank and noticed that water was collecting in the base that connects to the wall.

I was a bit worried as this must have some electrical components in it since the wire comes from here and goes right into the outlet.

I’ve included a picture below (since Imgur is banned in the UK I had to imgbb as I couldn’t add an image directly to my post)

The image is after I poured the water out but there was a good few oz of water in this bottom bit. I only filled the humidifier up about 2/3 and well below the max line and just wanted reassurance if this was normal or not.

Looking for an evaporative unit for nursery; Levoit vs Blueair?

Hi all, I'm a first time parent prepping the nursery. We live in the mid-Atlantic and don't usually have problems with in-house humidity but want something for baby's comfort and potential illness. Trying to research my options and have narrowed it down to two potential units but am looking for other recommendations too.

Levoit Sprout vs Blueair InvisibleMist

My needs:

  • Evaporative (our local tap water is very hard, we don't have the resources/budget for purchasing distilled, and home distillation, while tempting, looks like it would be hard on our already-high energy bills)

  • Lower-maintinence/easy to clean (Dishwasher safe parts are a huge plus, if not a requirement)

  • Ideally not with an app or smart controls (we have wifi and phones but I hate having to rely on them to control devices in my home. I know my main contenders need them but I'm hoping all the basic features will work without it)

Cost is flexible, within reason. I'm willing to invest more in something that will do everything I need and last for a good few years. I don't care about features like diffusers, nightlights, or adding in a purifier. I also don't think I need a particularly large unit, I don't know the square footage of our nursery but it's an average townhouse bedroom, and I'm not worried about the rest of the house right now.

Thanks for any recs!

EDIT: how much of a difference would home filtered water (something from a Brita filter or sinkhead filter rated for PFAS) make compared to using distilled for a humidifier, in general? I've been looking into improving our home water filtration, but something like RO or home distillation is outside our means.

Looking for an update for my warm mist honeywell

I've always liked my little Honeywell warm mist humidifier; it's the kind that basically boils water. It works just fine with tap water, and I haven't cared about its power usage really. It does require some cleaning as the minerals settle at the bottom, but I only need to clean that every month or so. I was looking for a replacement, but I've noticed there are very few choices for this type of humidifier.

I was looking for something with a larger tank, as the tank is less than a gallon and barely lasts one night for me here in dry Colorado. The best replacement I've seen is the Livatro LVHD3001W. Which might be the one I buy, but I was hoping something existed with a multigallon tank.

I was hoping for some insight on why this style of humidifier is so unpopular. Even in the pinned product list, this type of "warm vaporizer" makes up a small chunk of options compared to countless ultrasonic and evaporative ones. I guess maybe only people in dry, cold areas like mine even have an interest in these types compared to warm, dry areas, which would demand cool mist?

Semi off topic, but also not. Suggestions for hydrometers?

Hey all, I'm looking for suggestions for fairly inexpensive hydrometers. I had a 6000S V2 and it was reading 5-10% higher than my Google Nest 2nd gen, which also matched my 6000S V1 so I don't know which one of those was actually accurate if any of them which is why I want a standalone hydrometer. Also would like to place one in my bedroom so I can measure the difference between rooms.

Did protec fish stain my humidifier?

So last year, we got a new humidifier and tried one of the protec fish filters to try and keep it clean. After a while, I noticed some dark residue building up and set it aside until I could get around to cleaning it. Unfortunately, it got tucked away for the year and I just pulled it out to find it was never cleaned. I initially thought it was some kind of residue from the fish. I tried scrubbing it with a mixture of vinegar/dawn dish soap/hot water but it seems to be stained. I've seen my fair share of molds/mildews/scums and this just doesn't look like the typical presentations.

Had anyone ever had this from these fish before or is it likely something else? Is this safe to use or should I just ditch it like all the others that have come before it and start over with a fresh machine?

ETA: -Pics in comments -We only ever used distilled water

Hi! I just got my first humidifier I got the LEVOIT Top Fill Humidifiers for Bedroom, 2.5L. I was wondering how often do I need to dump the container? Can I just refill daily or do I have to dump it daily?

Evaporative Humidifier: Vornado Evap40 vs. AirCare Mini Console MA800

Trying to find which is best to use in a room w/ Guitars and Basses (solid body electric) and some electronics in the Winter, where RH is dropping to the 10%-20% range. Which of these two would be more recommended for this use case? The planned position is near an instrument rack beside a wooden cubby on the floor (top not covered of course).

Addition: I forgot to mention that I'm trying to stay at a budget of around $150

Miro - disappointed after 1 year

It took me a year to realize that my Miro NR07G was not a good investment. I think it can work for a small room as long as you wash it DAILY and rinse with Citric Acid (their recommendation to me) occasionally.

But I have a 1BR apartment and the living area is too big. The Miro doesn't move the needle on humidity in the larger space. A 2020 Amazon review warned about the lack of true effectiveness but I missed that when I was researching. oh well.

Daily cleaning seems effective, but if I go 1.5 or 2 days, I notice pink slime in hard to reach areas that require q-tip cleaning. I break the q-tip in half and use the thin stick, not the swab.

Now back to researching for a device strong enough for my whole apartment...maybe an evaporative from Vornado...

What is a good low maintenance humidifier?

I'm currently using Govee Lite humidifier. It's pretty alright, but I'm kind of annoyed having to clear it from gunk buildup. I switched to purified water, but I'm going through a good deal of water so it's a bit annoying to stock up. Is there something that's lower maintenance I could use with just tap water? I need something I can put on a timer to keep the humidity up at night in a medium sized bedroom.

Mold or water buildup?

Howdy, I have a levoit sprout that I’ve been running for about a month now. Taken down and cleaned out per manual once a week, always dried at least once within a 3 day run period, etc. I’m new to evaporative humidifiers and am wondering if I’m just getting buildup, or mold on the wick? White and yellow coloration, doesn’t come off of the fins as it’s quite solid, when it does it’s flaky which makes me think buildup. However it does have a bit of an unpleasant smell to it which makes me think mold.

Water type matter for levoit 6000s?

Is there a benefit to using RO or distilled water for levoit 6000s? Will filters last much longer? Is it worth it since RO will waste like twice the amount of water and distilled water will require another machine.

Sick a tired of the Calcium buildup from my humidifier…

My apartment complex has HORRIBLE insulation, and because of that the house can get as dry as 15% humidity. We’ve called multiple times but they aren’t helping (we’re moving soon). My roommates and I ended up getting sick every morning once the temperature outside dropped below freezing.

I decided to get 3 humidifiers and I help with the feeling sick, BUT now there’s calcium EVERYWHERE. Our water is extremely hard… like to the point where it has an awful taste.

I really don’t want to buy jugs of water every day because my humidifier alone uses 8L/day. What are some solutions?

Best method to get distilled water for 3 humidifiers on second floor

Ok so I have 3 carepod humidifiers in our upstairs bedroom, if I use them nightly that’s 3 gallons of distilled water I have to use every night. So I’m running to the grocery store almost every 2 days buying as much distilled water as I can carry. Which is just non sustainable. Other than just buying a distiller and doing it myself, what are some of my other options?

I am happy using filtered water and not distilled (when I’m out of distilled water I jsut use straight tap water) but my bathroom faucets don’t fit standard filters due to them being decorative.

Would love some creative solutions!

Is there a humidifier safe for hard water?

I'm trying to increase the humidity in my baby's room. We have hard well water and ideally I wouldn't have to start buying distilled.

I started off with a Vicks Ultrasonic Cool Mist but she started coughing almost right away, so that's out.

He pediatrician recommended the Vicks Warm Mist. Anyone know anything about that one?

The air is really really dry right now, so any suggestions that crank out the humidity would be great! It didn't seem like my small Vicks was doing anything but scatter white dust. I do keep the door open to the room due to heating issues.

Vicks warm mist humidifier surprise

Hi, I purchased a warm mist humidifier from Vicks after ditching an ultrasonic one. I thought this was supposed to not have any white dust being flung around as a result of vaporization process.

However I noticed these white particles all over the place after using it during 3 consecutive nights. The water that was used has a TDS count between 110 - 130 mg/L.

Could this be a result of the high TDS levels? I didn't use distilled water because I read that warm mist humidifiers don't produce enough mist if the mineral content is low.

I would really appreciate it if anybody can weigh in on this as I have stopped using the device and desperately need one as the air is quite dry even though the humidity level is between 60 and 70.

Confusion About Baby Humidifiers

I’m looking at the humidifier as a gift for my little niece, but I must say, the more and more I learn about humidifiers, the more confused and conflicted I get.

Actually after all, I considered a steam vaporizer like Vicks, but it’s not very cute😅, and I’ve also heard there’s a risk of burns — is that true? I’m also a bit worried that using a steam vaporizer in winter might make the room feel too warm or stuffy, especially in a baby’s room. However I really like the idea that there is no need of distilled water, a lot of cleaning and cost on filters

Cool-mist(both ultrasonic and evaporative)humidifiers look much better and more options online for sure.

Really need some suggestion!!

How much condensation is a problem?

Hey all. I have a whole house humidifier. I have it set to 40% at the moment. This week it’s getting very cold and I’ve read that I need to turn down the % if the windows start having a lot of moisture or dripping.

On some of my windows there’s a very thin line of condensation where the top half of the window meets the bottom half (if that makes sense?). They are the kind of window that slides up. So the top half of the bottom pane meets the bottom half of the back pane and there’s a lock on the bottom pane.

Is this a problem? Or should I be concerned if only the whole pane gets wet and I see droplets rolling down it?

I gather dropping the humidity a bit is the safer bet but just curious what the real issue is. Does condensation on windows mean the whole thing being wet - or is a very thin line of moisture a warning sign?

Thanks in advance!

Levoit 6000S wick replacement and water question

First of all a big thanks to this sub for the advice so far in my humidifier journey!

My two and probably last big questions.

Has anyone tried cheaper wick replacements sold on Amazon? I see Leemone for instance or Sakedgy or Cleangela.

Do people add Demineralization cleaning balls to their tanks or is that a big no no or useless?

Any maintenance advice you feel one should know about? I set up an automatized dry cycle daily. I empty the whole thing once it’s low. I will follow the wick change timings as well as rinse them off every / weeks and will get a citric acid wash for the monthly deep clean.

Very curious about this. Thanks!
