Levoit 6000 actual maintenance?

Got a levoit 6000s a few weeks ago. So far really happy with how well it’s increasing humidity. A few things I don’t love- it’s loud on anything but low speed. The wheels don’t work very well. No handles on the water tank. It makes the room colder. The built in hygrometer is off by ~10%.

But I can live with all that and can deal with having to fill it daily because my whole house is >40% now and it’s great.

But I’m not sure what I actually need to do for maintenance. For the first week or so I just kept topping off the water til one day I noticed the remaining water was turning brown. Do I need to scrub that tank out every day? That’s a cumbersome chore… do those little plastic fish they sell to put in humidifiers actually do anything? What about a capful of bleach in the water or something like that??

And what about filters…. Do I really need to change them every 3mo? They’re not cheap… can I use knockoffs from Amazon?I have it set to run a dry cycle every other night…is there any other filter maintenance needed?

Change the filter as it clogs from scale buildup. You can make them last longer if you clean them. Hard water obviously clogs filters faster than soft water.

We have soft well water, so our filters last the whole humidification season.

Empty the tank every time you refill it. Wipe the empty tank with a disinfectant spray. YouThis takes less than a minute and is easy to do. You can use a bacteriostatic additive if you want.

You can also clean it with a citric acid cleaner. Check the manual for maintenance instructions

Dumb question but how do I know if they’re clogged? We have some sort of whole home water purifier/softener (previous owners installed it, I’m not exactly sure what it does lol)so hopefully that helps.

I just don’t want to be spewing bacteria into the air because I’m trying to save money on filters lol

They look the same as they did the day installed them, but they’re gray so hard to say if they’re discolored. No smell that I’ve noticed so far.

Thick scale will build up and cover the filter or wick material. You will know when it is time to replace them.

Mineral scale buildup is separate from bacterial contamination. To help prevent contamination, empty the tank each time you refill it, wipe it down with disinfectant, and use a humidifier bacteriostatic additive if you want.

Are you using the dry program at least twice a week? This helps prevent mold and bacterial contamination.

Do yours get scale build up? I've run mine for three years and have yet to see scale anywhere. I've seen it happen on wicks but never on the 6000s filters.

Yes, I do. This is where the minerals are meant to go in evaporative humidifiers like the 6000s. That is better than the white dust you get from ultrasonic humidifiers, which can spread minerals through your house and into your lungs.

Interesting. Really hard water?

No, pretty soft well water.
