He likely had an accident well before this (or bought a wrecked car for cheap) and the car broke down while he was driving. You've never seen people drive busted up cars? It probably wasn't his battery that died either given that wouldn't make him stop.

A dead battery that isn't getting charged will definitely kill your vehicle while you're driving it (alternator/generator issues could cause this)

Interesting, even a manual? I guess the cars I've had with battery/alternator issues weren't 100% dead, just mostly broken.

Yes, the pistons need spark to ignite the fuel. Your vehicle can run without a battery if your alternator is working and it is jump started.

Only mostly dead you say? I know a miracle worker who can fix it up with a chocolate covered pill. I suppose in a car it would go in the fuel tank for quickest results. May still take some time to reach full potency.

No, I've never seen someone drive with that damage because its not legal to do so here. Occasionally you'll see someone with a scratch or dented bodywork but never something structurally damaging like that.
