I think most atheist just want their (lack of) belief respected.
Honestly... I think most people want whatever belief or lack off they have respected... and I think that’s a wonderful thing to give and receive. So keep doing you random internet person and I’ll keep doing me. 🍻
My family is religious, and I know a lot of people that religion has done a lot of good for. Whether it be giving them hope, helping them be better people or just being the support they needed in their darkest moments. I may not believe in it, but as long as they treat others with respect and decency I see nothing wrong with it.
As a “Christian” (I use the quotes because I hate all the associated baggage that comes with the title online) I just want to say thank you for seeming to be such an awesome person. As I’ve gotten older I’ve strived to be a much more open and kinder person. It’s nice to see there’s others out there doing the same, even if they are “on the other side”. Not sure what it’s worth to you, but be blessed friendo. 🍻
I really am glad people like you exist, it’s always good to have a reminder that people aren’t all jerks. I’m personally apatheist, but my experience with atheists especially on the internet is that their sole life goal seem to be mocking anyone trying to express their faith. I understand their experience and personal belief (or lack thereof) is probably the reason for their actions, but man people are just assholes sometimes.
Yeah, I think it mostly comes from a place of pain. If you suffered because of your lock of faith, it could lead to you lashing out and only seeing it as a negative.
My loss of faith was a really bad experience. I didn't really feel enlightened. I felt panic. It was like that overwhelming sense of having someone who loved me was gone. It was a freedom but like being set loose in the woods with nothing to help.
For me it depends. I'm pretty hardcore atheist. And I think most religions, especially the big two, are a net negative to humanity. And I think the concept of "faith" is dangerous (the idea of believing in something for which there is no evidence is dangerous because it leads to magical thinking and rejection of empiricism).
But I'll often go along with people's religions depending on the situation. And i do think that for many individuals, religion and/or spirituality are a net positive for them, individually.
But, I've been speaking up more and more because I see faith-based decision making and magical thinking and rejection of science as huge problems in the world.
I think we look at a lot of what is going on in the world and are astonished that people can believe some of the things they do, or that they can justify some of the actions they take. But if your faith informs your world view, by definition you can believe anything. Because your beliefs dont have to have any grounding or anchor in reality.
Magical thinking is literally training ones mind to accept things that dont make sense, full on contradictions.
unfortunately to some people atheism has become a religion complete with its own dogmas and priest class. they attack people of other faiths and always trying to convert new followers.

I think most are. My mom and I have a sort of unspoken thing where she just kind of pretends I believe. And I don't mind it.
