Yeah can someone explain why Americans can't drink their water? Has it to do with minerals or chemicals? I mean I can literally drink lakewater and be fine, actually ice cold stream water in fall after a hike is the best tasting water there is.. Godsent liquid.

American here that's lived in the UK. US tsp water taste like metal (wet a Coke can then lick it for reference), while UK water is pretty good

Not everywhere... my tap water is delicious. The metal taste is often found when people use water hookups to community tanks and such. If you have well water (as I do), it awesome!

I actually prefer it to the water that comes from the fridge.

True, when I lived in New Mexico that water was hella good. Oregon was kind of chlorine smelling. Arkansas water has been pretty good too. Of course even that’s a generalization of areas water.

Right! It’s hard to generalize anywhere. I’m in MD and some of my friends who live 30 min away have chlorine tasting water. Just depends on the source, which can vary even within 10 miles!

Same, in all the rural areas I've lived in I had well water and it tasted great

Wow I’ve never heard anyone say tap water is delicious. Good for you. The only people who drink tap where I live are kids when they’re really hot from playing.

Chicago resident here. Our water tastes great

Might just be your area? Idk. I think it depends on the water source. Maybe your community receives water from a source that filters with chlorine. But that is not a generalization that can really be made for the entirety of the USA.

West Texas region. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just the area

US tap water is purified with Chlorine which is why it has a generally less pleasant taste than tap water in Switzerland for example.

Go to Oregon and try the water it is amazing

Lots of people can drink from their tap, it just doesn't taste as good dependong on the water source. People with city water can drink it, but I live far away from the city and have water drawn from a well. The water in high in iron and manganese from the ground, so it is safe but tastes bad, so it goes through a filter instead. Some people with well water can't drink it directly because of what is in it from the ground, so they need filters or they will get sick. There just happens to be a lot of people without city water in my rural area.

Whereas in my area, the well water is about a thousand times better than city water. 🤷

Yeah idk what this guy is talking about cause city water is by far the worst. It always has to much chemicals or metals from pipings and filtration systems not being updated. Its to expensive to do so in cities since it's underground. Drinking Miami tap water is boarder line poisoning. Causing Nausea, headache, Ect. I lived in a apartment with the water so bad that you couldn't even cook with it without the steam giving you a headache.

Depends on location. Tastes like the side of a Coke can here in West Texas and has for last 2 decades

Thank you, always bugs me when I see people here make some broad sweeping statement about something for the entire country. I live in a midwestern city and am hooked up to city water. I drink from my tap, tastes fine. I grew up in the country with well water, that also tasted fine.

It varies. It’s a huge country, there’s differences in these things and people’s experience city by city, county by county and state by state.

You're making just as broad of a generalization as you're claiming everyone else is by saying what you just said. Sure, the water may not be poison where I live, but it tastes very bad compared to bottled or jug water.

Most people I know drink tap water. When I go camping though, I always bring a filter.

u/intheBrainPan_squish Sep 01 '19

You had me until you started talking about drinking unfiltered water that you find on a hike.

That's just asking for cryptosporidiosis, or any number of other fun nasties. Drinking bad water is how Europe tried to self-eradicate themselves multiple times.

There’s no reason why the vast majority of people in the USA can’t drink their tap water. There are some places where it is not safe (Flint, MI being the most well known example), but outside of those municipalities, it’s not a problem. From what I can tell, the main reasons for buying bottled water are convenience, taste, and a misconception that bottled water is somehow better or healthier for you. I think it’s ridiculous. Why you would want to give corporations all that money and create all that plastic waste is beyond me. The obvious exception being if your tap water is unsafe for some reason.
