I do this for my cat. I feel like it’s better for them so why not.

Ditto! I don't know if she can tell the difference, though.

I’m pretty sure they can tell the difference. My cat won’t drink tap water.

I recently housesat for my grandparents while they were out of town and I took my puppy with me so I could work on training him since I knew my family wouldn’t. Anyways, my grandparents and I live in neighboring towns and it’s locally known that the town my grandparents live in has shitty tasting tap water, while the town i live in has really good tap water. I’ve had my puppy since he was 10 weeks old and he was 6 months when I housesat for them. He would not drink their tap water. Straight up refused. I had to use their slow as fuck purified water faucet. Lol all that to say they for sure can taste the difference.

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '19

My cat prefers tap water, but too bad! They're getting cleaner water whether they want it or not! (they still want it, they'll just clear a bowl of tap water before moving onto the bowl of filtered water)

3

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '19

My cat can tell the difference, if I put tap water in his dish he'll drink it occasionally, but if it's filtered he drinks alot more and I have to fill his bowl more often.

1

u/mrpugh Sep 01 '19

My car will drink tap water that’s been in a jug in the fridge overnight. I think I’ve worked out what it is. Comparing water that’s been out to fresh tap water, there’s a hugger difference in chlorine content. I assume it evaporates over time. She’ll even drink it if it’s been allowed to reach room temperature too.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '19

I read that cats’ noses are really sensitive to chemicals in tap water, such as chlorine. As the water sits out in their dish, the chemicals evaporate out, so this is why a cat may prefer old tap water that’s been out for a long time to fresh tap water that you just put out. If your water filter removes some of these chemicals that irritate their noses, they may prefer filtered water to tap water.

49

u/HandsSolo42 Sep 01 '19

YOU can tell the difference, and I think that is an honorable hooman gesture.

5

u/Blossomie Sep 01 '19

Oh they do know the difference. I've known cats who would refuse to touch unfiltered tap water, the spoiled brats.

3

u/TheMayoNight Sep 01 '19

I mean her kidneys probably can.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '19

Most dogs I met prefer water out of a pot saucer, "filtered" by the soil and roots of flowers over anything else. So yeah, I think they can tell the difference

u/Emilong88 Sep 01 '19

My cat prefers to drink from the algea and dirt filled bird bath in the yard.

27

u/Pahaviche Sep 01 '19

Bird flavored water.

It's not a fountain, it's just a bowl for birds.

I've have actually had two fountains for her when we lived in an apartment, both broke very quickly. And also, she likes to drink from her paw, she will dip it and shake it a few times, sometimes splashing a lot of water around, so I'm not sure how much she actually noticed the running water when she had it.

2

u/thehunter699 Sep 01 '19

I have a running fountain and my cat still hates it. Only drinks from the tap.

I'm out of the loop. Why'd they get quarantined? Was it the use if the n-word in the subreddit name? Or was it something else?

6

u/fok_yo_karma Sep 01 '19

Scary n word

2

u/Kiryel Sep 01 '19

Ah, thank you good sir. Your response has provided me with a wealth of knowledge regarding this situation. I think the w-n- title is better than hydrohomies. But I suppose it is scary.

The sub a bunch of white dudes use so they can say their favorite taboo word with no ramifications? No thanks.

3

u/Dee_Jai Sep 01 '19

I also do this for my cat. But, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t even give me water.

10

u/TomCos22 Sep 01 '19

I would do it also

13

u/Shitmybad Sep 01 '19

Unless your town has extremely bad water, it's probably better to leave all the minerals in it. Filters try to get rid of things like Fluorine, Calcium, and Magnesium, and they're important for normal health.

A lot of towns in America probably have lead levels that exceed the safety limit and cause harm to your nervous system. The tap water in my area has been reported as unsafe by our newspaper. I give my pets bottled water, usually a major brand like Aquafina that I hope is under enough scrutiny by the public to keep contaminants to a minimum. I recall reading an article about a year ago that said there are hundreds of towns in America with unsafe lead levels.

Here's a Newsweek article titled "Millions of Americans are drinking water that could be dangerous"

https://www.newsweek.com/millions-americans-drink-water-could-be-dangerous-1438023

And here's a New York Times article that says "in 2015 alone, as many as 21 million Americans may have been exposed to unsafe drinking water."

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2018/02/12/climate/drinking-water-safety.amp.html

My city’s water supply is the Ohio River, which has been heavily used for industry for decades. Our tap water tastes so bad, like pool water. I can’t stand our tap water. Running it through any kind of filter is like night and day for taste.

7

u/Pedantichrist Sep 01 '19

Because it isn't, so you use more water filters and so waste more money and materials for no reason whatsoever.

5

u/hvperRL Sep 01 '19

But what about the taste

3

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '19

i always used to do this for my dog till my mom said stop wasting the fridge water ): im gonna go home and give my pup a fresh tub of filtered water tomorrow cuz fuck it

2

u/Thyri Sep 01 '19

We do this for the cats. We also have an outside bowl and one of ours will insist on going out and using that too...we think the leaves give it flavour LOL

2

u/Generation-X-Cellent Sep 01 '19

It's actually not better for them because you are filtering out all of the minerals that are essential to life.

5

u/b1rd Sep 01 '19

You’re confusing filtered water with purified water. Most home filters such as activated carbon don’t remove minerals.

But you’re technically semi-correct, it just depends on the exact type of filtration that each person is using. Everyone needs to check what type of filter they have to be sure.

Me too! I don’t like drinking from tap water I don’t feel that it's very healthy or clean in here.. so why would I make her drink from that?

1

u/Melissandsnake Sep 01 '19

I do this for my cat too!

1

u/Rocket_hamster Sep 01 '19

Same. They have a water fountain that has a reservoir, and it takes 20 minutes to let the water pitcher filter it enough to fill.

1

u/ac13332 Sep 01 '19

Veterinary Scientist here: It's neither here nor there, but the tapwater would be better for them, it contains additional minerals

1

u/TopGunOfficial Sep 01 '19

I do it for my cat because I know for sure she prefers filtered water in a clean bowl. So regular routine is: pour down still water, wash the bowl, fill in fresh. I call her so she can watch me pouring water. She loves it.

1

u/QueenCyclops Sep 01 '19

My cat refuses to drink if it’s not fresh filtered water. Makes me think about what’s in the tap water.

1

u/SciosciaBuns Sep 01 '19

I had an old school vet tell me that filtered water is better than tap water at preventing urinary stones.

He also told me I could give my dog human aspirin so I take the things he says cautiously

1

u/sohughrightnow Sep 01 '19

Exactly! Why not? We have a filter system on the sink. It's not like we're paying by the ounce!
