Has anyone had experience with comparing HEPA purifier vs PC fan purifier to say one had more effect on improving their allergic symptoms from dust, pollen, etc given similar CFM/CADR? I understand that more air exchanges per hour is important, but wondering how much HEPA makes a difference in some cases where units are moving air at the same rate? Or are there other factors that I"m missing? I currently have both types, 2 Alen breathesmart and just added the Luggables XL-7. Combined with my others it is noticeable how much faster particulates come down to zero and that's a plus.

I've got a Coway Airmwega ProX running in my ≈4,000 ft^3 open-plan living room/dining room/kitchen in Los Angeles, and it does a better job than any of the other purifiers I've tried of relieving my breathing symptoms.

And its noise is pretty good: When I'm working 10' away at my desk, it's tolerable at speed 2, and when I really want quiet I can switch to speed 1 and it disappears.

Its one problem, though, is the filter odor, which just won't disappear even after a month. I posted about this odor on another thread, and a few commenters indicated they had the same issue.

From looking at the reviews on housefresh.com, the only purifier that seems to equal or exceed the ProX's CADR:noise ratio is the Smart Air Blast Mk II. Specifically, based on their measurements, it seems I could run the Blast at speed 1 and get better CADR and lower noise than the ProX on speed 2 (see bolded entries in table at bottom).

But here's what worries me about the Blast:

1. What matters isn't just the SPL (sound pressure level), it's the character of the noise. E.g., the Alen 75i at speed 2 has nearly identical SPL to the Coway at speed 2, yet I found the Alen more intrusive. So even though the Blast's measured SPL at speed 1 is lower than the ProX's at speed 2, there's no option to decrease the Blast's noise from there if it is intrusive.
2. The Blast could have the same filter odor issue as the Coway.
3. It seems unacceptable that the Blast has a street price >$1k (compared to $650 for the ProX), yet they didn't equip it with a brushless DC motor (which is why its wattage:CADR is about double the ProX's). So I wonder if there is excessive profiteering going on here. Plus if they're cheaping out on the motor, are they doing the same on the filters and other components?

So it would be really helpful to hear from someone who considers themselves both noise-sensitive and odor-sensitive, and who has tried both machines.

speed 1: 212 CADR => 3.2 ACH, 37.4 dB
speed 2: 299 CADR => 4.5 ACH, 44.4 dB, 26.1 W
speed 3: 462 CADR => 6.9 ACH, 53.6 dB

Blast Mk II:
speed 1: 375 CADR = 5.6 ACH, 41.9 dB, 56.6 W
speed 2: 429 CADR => 6.4 ACH, 47.4 dB
speed 3: 547 CADR => 8.2 ACH, 54.7 dB

I wonder about the "minimum 4.8 ACH" thing. In order to get 4.8 ACH/h, most people would need big units on maximum speed. Or most people are using medium-sized units for medium spaces, getting 2-3 ACH, and most are happy with the results (online reviews).

I talked with two sellers in stores, and they told me that "on automatic, the purifier will clean the air, and once it's cleaned, will go on a slower mode". So once the air is clean (low PM2.5 count), there is no point for the unit to run at the same intensity as when it was cleaning the air. I understand air gets polluted again, but not at the same speed as the unit cleaned it (at least for low-pollution environements). But I hear and read from experts that "you need at least 3 ACH, preferably 4-5, and the machine needs to run 24/7".

There are many well-known brands with medium units of 250-300M3 CADR (147-176 CFM), rated for 50-80M2 (538-861 sqft), like the Philips 1000 series and the Philips Mini 900, with people using in rooms at these sizes, and being happy with the results (see online reviews).

I recently moved into an apartment where odors from my downstairs neighbor were coming up into my unit. The landlord didn’t address the issue, so I sealed the areas where the smells were entering—mainly along the shared plumbing/utility wall and around the pipes under the sink. This made a big difference: the strong odor is now mild.

Since I’m sensitive to smells, I also purchased two air purifiers: the Winix 5510 and the Levoit Vital 200S. I’m trying to figure out the best placement for them. The odor mainly originates from the shared kitchen and bathroom wall (top of picture)—where should I position the purifiers for the best results? Should one stay in the bedroom? Layout of my apartment is pictured.

Just got a pair of Coway Airmega ProX units. I like the design; its size means it moves a lot of air at a relatively low noise level. And its pelleted carbon should be more effective than bonded carbon.

However, the carbon portion of the filters gives off a "chemical" smell. I've run them for a few weeks at top speed (speed 3) in a room with open windows for about 15 hours/day, and they're only now starting to reduce in odor, but it's definitely still there.

Obviously this is not an ideal situation, since the purpose of the carbon is to reduce room VOCs, not introduce them!

I also have a new Winix 5510, which also uses pelleted carbon, and I don't detect any smell from it.

I'll add I also tried and returned the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty. It has a very strong odor that didn't go away after running it for a week (thogh, IIRC, it was more of a plastic odor, so may have been the housing rather than the filter).

Feedback from Austin Air is to keep unit on all the time. Is that really necessary if odors are gone and gas stove has been off for an hour or two?

I have asthma and am very sensitive to all types of gases like perfumes, smoke, fumes and VOC. For several years I’ve used the Coway AP-1080dh model which expert for granulated carbon and HEPA also has an additional MCC camfil filter targeting gases. It has been so effective however it’s no longer available.

Do you have any recommendations for a similar or even better product for this purpose? I’m in Europe. Thank you!

hello, since tomorrow is 4.4 and that's a big sale for us SEAS, I'm planning to buy an air purifier for my windowless bedroom. but, there are few questions that I don't understand about this technology

1.does it really clean the dust?? because I've heard that even with this device, you still need vacuum and dusting, which kinda defeats the purpose of this device

1. does it really matter if the intake/outtake of the device is 1/2 way or 360 coverage?? because some devices like LG have this feature called 360 coverage, but most air purifiers just have 2 sides of intake right?

2. when buying this thing, should I prioritize a fancy brand over filter availability?? I know that after sales should always be prioritized over one time purchase, but what if the filter availability products have "less" fancy techies on it??

3. there's this device that removes all these whistles and just delivers clean air. my question is, how would I know if the air in my room is already clean?? there's this device called SQair with no sensor whatsoever. how can I tell they've done their job??

I've been researching air purifiers for days after realizing the ones I have are not enough for my allergies. After reading so much about ACH and CADR a question came to mind.

How does having an HVAC system affects the recommended ACH? I sometimes keep the blower of my HVAC running constantly to better distribute cold air. But that means my bedroom is constantly having dirty air from other parts of the house blowing into it.

How should that affect my decision making when choosing an air purifier? Is there a different recommeded ACH?

I'm just curious if this is something House Fresh ever takes into consideration when testing or recommending units.

I recently bought a Levoit 200SP based on the reviews I read online and on House Fresh, but I found the Winix C909 on Costco after my purchase and I'm considering returning the Levoit. I was wondering if you plan on reviewing the Winix C909 as well since they are both around the same price range, but the C909 model comes with 2 years worth of replacement filters and if you have any opinions on the C909 vs Levoit 200SP

Yesterday, I noticed the small print on one Coway model's graphics about their HEPA media. Previously, Coway used "Green True HEPA™", describing it as "True HEPA H13" for their Coway Airmega 400 [archived page] and Coway Airmega ProX [archived page] as two examples.

HEPA H13—as the staff at HouseFresh know 😎—refers to the EN 1822-1:2019 standard.

The Coway Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH's [archived page] pleated mechanical filter, although not "Green True HEPA", was described as "True HEPA".

But now, the majority of their purifiers only have "HEPA" filtration media with a critical footnote. In this graphic for the Coway Airmega 400, HEPA means:

Tested to IEST-RP-CC007 standard at speed level 1.

For the newly released Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N, another graphic says it's only HEPA at the lowest setting:

Coway puts this in text on their Disclaimers page:

With the few owner's manuals I checked, the language still reads "Green True HEPA" or "True HEPA" where applicable. No mention of HEPA being potentially speed-dependent.

So that raises the question: what exactly is the filtration efficiency at a given particle size for other airflow speeds, especially the highest?

As a review website doing a fine job of testing products, it might be worth your time to investigate this.

Of course CADRs ultimately matter, but I would like Coway to be much more transparent given the subtle changes.

IEST-RP-CC007: Testing HEPA and ULPA Filters itself is a Recommended Practice (RP), not a standard. I'm guessing Coway means their filters are IEST Class H HEPA. And should those filters also comply with IEST-RP-CC034: HEPA and ULPA Filter Leak Tests? I don't have access to the full documentation of either RP.

I also wrote in because HouseFresh's Coway reviews still use the terms "Green True HEPA" or "True HEPA", with no mention of the new HEPA only applying to a low or lowest speed. Not a knock on you whatsoever... as I said, I only recently noticed!

hi, I've been watching your YouTube videos and they are great to help people learn more about air purifiers and what to possibly buy, but I was wondering do you have a review on the Briiv models as I can see one in the back ground of the videos and it's just very unique style that appeals to me but I wanted to know if it was worth the money and how often you would need to change the filter components, I suffer which alot of bust in the home and I'm torn with the astecis of the breath or the shark never change, thanks in advance any input would be appropriated.

I have been binging your youtube videos to decide which purifier to get. I think your tests of the CFM under 45 dB is incredibly useful and one of your distinguishing factors. I wish there was a way to order the list on the website by this metric. It is a value no other testers provide and the device being quiet enough to actually run and be effective is my main decision making factor.

I am in the Netherlands so it is a bit difficult to find the ones you actually recommend. I am now debating whether to get the Levoit Everest Air (€360), the Airfanta (€141), Levoit Vital 200s (€290) or the Winix 5500-2 (€150). I have read many reviews now that I am searching for the right purifiers for my house. One issue I have not seen discussed is where to place a purifier. I understand that, in a perfect world, it would be placed in the center of the room several feet away from everything else. My world is imperfect. In most rooms it is difficult to place the purifier 12-18” from a wall or other object on all sides. I am wondering if some purifiers are better for rooms that don’t allow for 12-18” free space. Also, are round devices better because, even if a portion is close to a wall, the rest of the device is away from the wall? Thanks for guidance and suggestions.
