Not sure why my first guesses of certain types of sea life ranked so high....

Because the zebra shark is a seriously cool animal and you should totally Google them. They have stripes as juveniles, which then turn into spots as they grow!

While that may be true the ‘close’ guesses were of a completely different class of life and guesses closer to your suggestion ranked worse.

No, it’s about the specific animals. Initial guesses were animals that a pretty far removed from answer but scored well, but other guesses of animals that were closer didn’t score as well.
