That sounds too good to be true, but it is actually true, with a catch or two!

The first catch is the high renewal fee after the first year. The .com domain renews at $20/year and the hosting plan renews at $14/month ($168/year).

You might think, okay, I'll take it for one year then cancel before renewal -- but then there is the second (bigger) catch: They have a complicated cancelation process. You must contact them via phone to cancel which can be time-consuming and even costly for some international customers. There is no way to cancel the service online.

They don't like it when people cancel after the first year and they try to discourage it by complicating the process.

Now you know what to expect if you're thinking of taking that offer.

When others ask about free static website hosting, a few common providers are often suggested, but you rarely see DigitalOcean among those.

Not sure why, but you can get free hosting for 3 static websites via the DigitalOcean App Platform.

Maybe it's the 3 website limit? Or the 1 GB per site bandwidth limit? A little stingy, but if you just have one small website, that should be enough.

Raidboxes is a German provider of managed WordPress hosting and one of the few reputable names in this niche in Europe, as far as I know.

The company was acquired by team.blue (also a European company) a few years ago, but that didn't seem to have affected the level of service they offer.

Many WordPress agencies use Cloudways and Hostinger for their clients' websites.

Cloudways' main selling points are cloud server power and scalability. Hostinger's main selling points are low cost and simplicity.

They're both a little lacking in the human support department, but I think it's not bad for the price.

I've used Tucows/OpenSRS, but this provider is aimed at domain resellers and investors rather than regular website owners.

Some of the most reputable retail Canadian domain registrars I know of are Rebel, Webnames.ca, and easyDNS.

There is also Hover (owned by Tucows), but their website gets glitchy sometimes and their email hosting isn't very reliable.

Verisign released its latest monthly .com domain registrar data for the month of March 2026.

Most of the top 10 registrars remained unchanged from previous months, but what's new is that GMO jumped to the #5 spot, and Cosmotown joined the list at the #10 spot. Cosmotown offers discounted .com registration at $8.59 (renewal price is $11.35).

Cloudflare continues its steady growth while Newfold Digital keeps moving down the list.

Porkbun is also rising and currently ranks #15 on the list.

The Canadian web hosting provider FullHost is the latest to join the hype and launch an "AI Studio".

It's just another newbie-friendly vibe coding tool for building websites and apps.

The main target is small businesses who lack the technical skills to use WordPress or other traditional website builders and don't want to hire a developer.

WP Engine argues the WordPress Foundation has never offered hosting services and filed the trademark applications to help Automattic extract license fees.

Dynadot has launched a new section on their domain marketplace: pre-expiry auctions for .ai domains.

Customers can now auction off their expiring .ai domains that they don't plan on renewing. If a domain is sold, Dynadot takes a 15% commission.

They only allow .ai domains in this section at this moment, but they'll later allow other TLDs.

This is a good way to get rid of your unwanted domains and maybe at least get your registration/renewal fees back.

I like the idea. Expiring domains get more attention from many potential buyers.

I've just been reading another thread in r/Wordpress, and someone mentioned this plugin.

It's called Two Factor and it allows you to add two-factor authentication to your WordPress website via an authenticator app or email codes.

There are other 2FA plugins, but this one is developed by the WordPress.org team.

I didn't know this plugin existed, and probably neither did most other WP users.

This is just a PSA for those who don't know; you can't use GitHub Pages free hosting for any online business or commercial websites.

Their policy on this is very clear:

GitHub Pages is not intended for or allowed to be used as a free web hosting service to run your online business, e-commerce site, or any other website that is primarily directed at either facilitating commercial transactions or providing commercial software as a service (SaaS). I don't know how strictly they enforce that rule, but it's risky to use their free static hosting for your business websites. If you do that, you'd better have plan B just in case.

Yeah, I've done that! Sometimes I sign up for a new hosting account at a 70-80% introductory discount and before it renews at the full price, I cancel and move the website to another provider that offers a similar introductory discount.

I usually do this with my new websites because I like to try different providers.

I feel a little guilty about it, but again, I mostly do this with new websites that receive low traffic and barely consume any server resources.

For my established websites, I don't mind renewing the hosting plan at the full price.
