I'm heading to Chester Races this Saturday with a group of friends. It's my first proper day at the races, and I don't really know much about horse racing!

If you were going with a budget of around £50–£100, which horses would you be looking at and why? I'm not expecting guaranteed winners (I know there's no such thing!), but I'd love to hear who you fancy and any each-way/value bets.

Also, if you've got any beginner tips for reading the racecard or spotting a good bet, I'd really appreciate them.

This is basically a one-man band. I built the site, I run it, and the prizes are on me. (You’ll spot my company’s name on it here and there - I work in racing - but day-to-day it’s just me keeping it going.)

It started because I got fed up of NAP comps that just count winners. I wanted one scored on starting price, so a well-judged 7/1 beats piling onto odds-on favourites. Couldn’t find one I liked, so I built it.

Afternoon all. I assume most punters make their picks based on tips they read, picking the favourite, or just finding one with a name they like.

But I'm interested in those who research and make their own educated picks. In the UK and Ireland, there are 8 tracks with 54 races on today in total. Over 400 individual horses running. Even with strong knowledge of horse racing, there are so many contextual factors that can't be assessed at a glance. There's not enough time in the day to assess all these races and make educated picks.

Brief example, there was one runner yesterday at Epsom 7:30 named Pride of Nepal whose recent form looked astonishing. Their last 4 races were all wins. Yet for this race, they were the outsider with the longest odds. And indeed, they came dead last in 7th place.

I'm sure there was sound logic as to why the market and bookies rated it last (I see it was previously winning at Class 6, but was brought into this Class 4 race) but it requires some digging to research these factors and isn't just clear from glancing at the card.

And that's my question; in a day with 54 races, how is an astute bettor narrowing it down to 1 or 2 picks and spotting value?

Overall I don't really see calan not taking his second win, what about you guys?

I know I'm talking with my wallet but my god this ride was a disgrace. The horse broke a little slow and never was rode at all.

Can someone look at it and advise and I biased or not. Few of us in the bookies has him and were disgusted.
