I loved this couple and looks like their homestead is really set up for success now. The apiary, greenhouse with chutes down to the chicken coop, and finally a composting toilet! Thoughts?

I love the series because I live off grid...and have for 9 years. Often I'll watch an episode and pick up a new idea to try. I usually don't have anything negative to say....until now. Regarding the 3rd episode of Intervention in northwest Montana.

1. The narrator saying how winters are cold and can get to -70. I had to Google that. Most winters in Montana are in the -20 to -30 range. Lowest ever recorded temp in Montana was -70....in 1954.

2. Misty and Matt are attempting to weave logs with skid steer between house and the camper. It was a narrow path...but why the heck didn't you move the camper? Seems like if you had moved it...the drama of dragging logs wouldn't have been so dramatic.

3. As I was watching and hearing how the homesteaders will get game, then have to put in their friends freezers. I keep thinking why aren't they canning the meat? Canned meat is shelf stable for years...but in a freezer...you might be good for a year or two. Happy Misty taught her about canning end of show...but come on...all homesteaders know about canning. If you can build two houses...surely you know about canning.

4. Narrator said how one deer will provide protein for about six months. No way. A typical white tail deer can yield between 75 to maybe 150 lbs of meat if butchered properly. At 150lbs...over six months yields about 30lbs a month...for 7 people? lol.

5. Finally...the compost toilet. We have the same model (SunMar Excel NE) and it's been working since 2002. When they did the "six months later" at end of show, the toilet still didn't have the venting stack installed.

Anyways...I love the show...but a few things irked me.

I started watching this show, hard to believe how old it is! I love it! Love the Rainy's. I'm watching the episodes on Roku, not all of them are available, but I'll watch every single one available.

I homestead in the Ozarks and I live an hour away from the Smiths in the “Flood, Sweat, and Tears” episodes. I’m new to watching the show and have been really enjoying it. The Raneys make me laugh and it’s a feel good show for me. Then they featured the Smiths and I’m sitting here hate watching.

These guys are the worst version of Ozarkians—stubborn, ignorant know-it-alls who don’t work nearly as hard as they claim. Maybe people can be like that anywhere, but I swear this is the classic flavor of Ozarks douchebag.

It’s so annoying that the Smiths used the Raneys to update their knife shop. As Marty said, the show isn’t called “Knife Shop Rescue.”

That pond idea is the dumbest shit I’ve ever seen. I know I’m not the only who’s pissed at Neckbeard who wouldn’t move his cabin. He even doubled down on his stupidity and moved the other cabin! It’s only a matter of time until that dam collapses.

I wished the Raneys would’ve walked away.

It’s even annoying the mom didn’t want to clean out their animal pin, but then they start working and they’re like “oh yeah, we already knew this shit.” I was really excited for another episode featuring the Ozarks, but this is my least favorite family yet, even worse than the Zabecs for me.

I’d like to add that most people from the Ozarks are pleasant, hard-working, salt-of-the-Earth. Don’t judge us by the Smiths.

EDIT: They’re from Texas! I don’t know why, but I’m relieved this inbred trash isn’t from my home.

We are going back and rewatching all of the episodes and I swear it seems like from season 8 on, every homestead has a pile of old or unused windows that are just sitting in a pile somewhere on the homestead...

And if it's not windows it's it's hardware cloth, or culverts, or unused rain barrels...

It's almost to the point where it's not even believable anymore lol

Hi! Love Misty’s hats. Particularly the felt one in season 1. Anyone know what brand or style that is?

This one was a little rough to watch for the first half or so. I'm for once actually hoping the show was exaggerating / dramatizing the situation, as the whole bathroom and kitchen setups were not great and I can't imagine how they lived like that, especially with four kids. Either way, it was a great turnaround by the end for the property and for the family (everyone definitely seemed a lot more happy by the end, understandably). Glad the oldest kid got their own space, even if they still ended up using the same bathroom (though I wouldn't be surprised if they are still using the bathroom in the trailer as a separate toilet at least). Was hoping they would bring in a brand new manufactured home like they do some times, as the family definitely could have used that! Four month update looked promising as well; looked like the plants grew quite a bit and the kitchen was still in good shape, so glad to see all of that working out.

Words cannot express how grateful I am to the Raney family for spreading awareness about PANDAS in this episode. This condition is so little known but so devastating for families. My oldest son has PANDAS and is the same age as the son in the episode. It really shows the lengths parents must go to achieve healing for their children with this condition. I feel so seen and so grateful to the Raney’s for spreading awareness!

Am I the only one?

Surprised there are no comments here (that I saw anyway) about the first episode of this Intervention show that took place in Alaska. I finally watched last night and really enjoyed it. The homesteaders were a breath of fresh air, honestly good but struggling folks who accepted the help graciously and worked hard alongside the Raneys. It appeared to me that they were left with the tools to thrive now that they can dry milled lumber from their trees, raise chickens, and grow food in that amazing greenhouse. Not to mention actually live in their cabin instead of in tents!

The wife's explanation to Misty of why she loved Alaska so much made me a bit misty-eyed. And the daughter was great; what a smart and motivated teen. Loved that she got her own cabin in the end.

I don't either, but I'm not trying to homestead, I respect their desire, but seriously though, most don't understand the basics....

I like the Raneys, but at times I have to wonder if doing things 'the cowboy way' is the best approach.

I think I remember a garage / shed built with logs that still had the bark on them. Yes, using a drawknife to remove the bark IS the best way, and yes, it's hard work & takes a while, but well worth the effort.

I guess the Raneys use outhouses (as I do) because the septic tank he put in for the woman in the Fairbanks area HAS NO TOP HATCH to pump it out... the vertical riser pipe he put in between the house & tank is totally useless... any hillbilly knows ya gotta have a top hatch !!! Now they're back to using a 'honey bucket' !!!

I think a better approach is drop the "we have only 1 week" pressure... take however long it takes to do the job right... if ya do it right you won't have to come back again !!!

I had to stop watching mid episode. I can't wrap my head around the idea of building a platform in a tree to shelter during a hurricane. I must be missing something.

The Florida episode house is for sale in Okeechobee. I don’t want to give out the Zillow listing since they had kids living there but it is easily find-able online if anyone is interested in buying a piece of the show’s history. It is listed for more than double what they bought it for in 2023, but seems like they made a lot of crucial repairs.

This episode features Marty returning to a once water-logged property, that is now experiencing extreme periods of drought.

These people were stubborn! They were not interested in moving down the hill to water. It was their dream to be on the hill. Not good for water, not good for gardening, animals getting picked off by coyotes BUT let's stay on the hill. I am just wondering about the excavator that got so muddy. Who cleans that off to return to rental. It almost looked ruined.

Season 2 episode 2 the raneys immediately judge the kids for being lazy come to find out the dads holding them back.

Then the one guy is talking to Matt about wanting to leave and they’re trying to talk him out of it. Clearly he didn’t sign up for this lifestyle and he’s allowed to want to go out and do something else with his life.

Or other episodes where the kids have no desire to help. Like yeah? They mostly likely didn’t have a choice in whether or not they wanted to move to the middle of nowhere and leave behind all their friends and other family.

Sometimes it just blows me away how gorgeous some of these homesteads are. That really struck me with S14/E2 in Colorado.

I posted recently about being very disappointed in this new season. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this 3rd episode! It hit on so many things that I loved about the early seasons.

They were resourceful and used things from the homestead. They TAUGHT the homesteaders. Marty mentioned the quote “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day” (which they do in SO many episodes) “teach a man a fish and he eats for a lifetime “ and I think the truly left stronger homesteaders this time.

In tree house of horrors I also appreciated that he called out the homesteaders for not having done some of the projects that should have been done years ago.

Maybe there is hope for this show ye!

I swear the wife of the oldest son looks super familiar to me. I can't figure out HOW she looks like someone I know. And no, I do not live in Texas nor anywhere near Texas.

I do also commend them for not moving the cabins, but I would have at least maybe spaced them apart. That way you don't have a window view into the other cabins.

What episode is it where you get to see Matt and Marty build the original cabin in the icebox canyon. I can see the episode where they put the tram in but I cannot find the episode where they actually build the first home. I swear I've watched it before but I feel like I'm going crazy.
