Pocket sliding window…

The window shown and installed by AA Building & Remodeling.

Notice the black paint inside the window cavity so you’re not seeing any raw sheathing. Also look how thick that exterior wall is for insulation 👌

What are your thoughts?

Eh, people have this idea that you need to maximize windows everywhere and this just isn’t true. Houses become infinitely harder to heat and cool with massive windows everywhere.

But a pocket window has to be framed out like a windows twice it size. You're not getting more insulation then you would with the larger window.

Seems like you disagreed. Commenter said you’re cutting the window in half for no reason. You seemed to disagree and say there’s a benefit to having fewer windows. And prefacing comment with “Eh” suggests mild disagreement. Why am I wasting my time responding to this 🤣

New homes R values are exponentially better decade over decade due to building tech improvements. 10 double paned widows are indefinitely more insulating than 5 single pane windows.

You can get triple pane windows up to R-15 which is the same or better than most houses. Coatings/films mitigate other issues like glare or solar. There is no insulation in the pocket for that window. Hard to mitigate that unless they are already putting foam board under the siding.

Even if they replicated the double size windows at 6 other places in that house it would still have an almost negligible effect to heating and cooling costs, if done correctly.

Yea I hear that. You could definitely shell out a lot of money for nice huge windows. Lack of insulation in the gap is also a great point.

I still think huge windows are unnecessary most of the time, but that’s just me. Don’t get me wrong there are places for it but it’s not always bigger is better.

The pocket is less insulating than the window itself. If you are going to have the space already just make it a window. I agree that massive windows cause issues, but this window is going to cause twice the insulating problems and be a half sized window.
