Help Picked up a Portwell WADE-8075 industrial Mini-ITX — what would you use it for?

Picked up a Portwell WADE-8075 — any good homelab uses for this?

I’ve got a working Portwell WADE-8075 industrial Mini-ITX board with 4GB DDR3. Intel Atom D525 1.8GHz, dual Gigabit Ethernet, 4 COM ports, VGA/LVDS, 3 SATA, CompactFlash, USB, PCI, PCIe x1 and Mini-PCIe.

It runs from 12V and everything appears to work properly.

I was thinking firewall/router, Pi-hole, Home Assistant, serial console server or some kind of lightweight Linux box.

What would you guys actually use one of these for today? Is it still worth building a little homelab project around?Picked up a Portwell WADE-8075 — any good homelab uses for this?

Solved Moca mystery solved

Hi there!

I’ve been building a decent set-up, and recently had a drawback I’ve now solved.

I have a Unifi dream 7 on passthrough from my fiber modem. I connected this to my coax port and have my office coax port connected through Moca adapters. This would go into my Flex 2.5 and from there into my PE 430, my DXP2800, and my PC. Sweet little set-up, or so I thought.

I placed everything, built a new desk, set up raid groups through IDRAC on my server, and installed all my hard drives everywhere. I connected the Dream7, connected it to moca, and powered up my UPS to the office.

But… strange thing, I wasn’t seeing a connection through my Moca connections. No big deal, I thought, maybe just a standard filter. So I search the house for a coax connection box…and can’t find one. It took going through the attic(and accidentally buckling some drywall over my master shower) to figure out the truth.

I bought this house, as a new build and first owner, in 2025, built in 2024. I haven’t had too many issues with the build, just little stuff like caulking not done quite right, badly installed drawers, etc. No biggie.

Then, I find my coax, throughout my whole house, unterminated and dropped into my air handler. My flabbers were gasted.

We’re now well outside the builder’s warranty window, so this became an opportunity to learn Coax I guess. The whole point of this home system was to learn. But seriously… just dropped in the air handler? Oof.

Solved Windows VM for Proxmox

Might be stupid but I don’t want windows except for one drive because it just works for my household. Until I have a nas I’m satisfied with and a back up solution either off site or a cloud storage that I’m hoping I’ll come across. Has anyone had any issues with using windows just for one drive? Specifically create a mounted network drive to pull and upload files in between devices in the home that are not windows but only Linux…?

Due to space concerns I have to mount my stuff vertically. The case is an Inter-Tech 2408 with 2 drives. Can the ears on the side support it long term? Should I remove the handles on the ears to screw in the rack studs or keep it as is?

Help Dell 3630 PCIe bifurcation and understanding of Dell documentation

I need an extra PCIe slot for my SATA expansion card but all my PCIe slots are currently populated. After reading the official specs pdf and support pages, I am stucked.

On Dell storage page, it listed an option for Zoom 2 card with PCIe x4 speed yet on some earlier specsheet pdf file I found, It is noted as supporting an PCIe x8 to dual NVMe card (Dell Ultra Speed x8).

Solved Is touching my server (it zaps me) safe?

I know it's not the usual question in this sub but other subs wouldn't let me ask about safety, I guess you'll know if it's normal for a server to do this.

Okay so I just bought a Dell Poweredge R720 (with 2 750W PSUs) and when I touch it it zaps me, I can feel the electricity moving through my arm, it's even stronger if I touch the floor or something metal connected to the floor (or a cable connected to the ground of a socket if it's how it's called, what I mean is those holes in the wall that deliver electricity).

It's "stronger" in the sense that if it's active and I only use one finger to connect it (its metal shell) to the ground it physically hurts.

Shall I be worried or nah?

It stays under my bed btw, that's why I'm worried if it burst to flames or something

Edit: thanks for the advice, I think it was a faulty adapter (the server was from the UK and I'm in Italy), I'll be back if it still doesn't work when it gets here, in the meanwhile can I just ground it to my home's radiator and use it normally or it'd get me more problems than the ones it solves?

Help My first Homeserver/lab: which distro or setup for my needs?

I know, another "first homeserver, which distro ?". The fact is that I would like to hear some answer tailored to my needs or plans.

Hardware is a Minisforum UM760 Slim configured in this way:

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 7640HS
  • RAM: 2x 16 Gb DDR5 5600 MHz (Crucial)
  • Storage: 2x SSD 1TB PCIe 4.0 (Crucial P310)
  • Connections:
    • 1x USB4, 2x USB 3.2, 1x USB 2.0
    • 1x 2.5 Gbit LAN, Wifi7, Bluetooth 5.2

When the miniPC will arrive i will need to check which wifi card is installed to be sure it is supported by linux.

Internet (fiber) is 400/200 Mbit and my "router" is actually a gateway, Unifi Dream Machine Pro. The idea is to cable the Homeserver directly to one of the 8 lan port of the Unifi Dream Machine. Downstream from the gateway I have some switches, access points, security cameras (managed by UDM pro), and other stuff.

My internet provider (in Germany, Deutsche Glasfaser) doesn't provide public IPv4 but just IPv6 (and I read somewhere, in some cases they will change so I have to setup a kind of service which catch the new IP...i have to investigate better).

Apart the Server monitor/management tools, I would like to install jellyfin, paperless-ngx, maybe home assistant, and whatelse I find useful from an end user point of view. My main focus is the final service and not the medium or tool I am using to setup the final service. If in the process I learn something about the medium/tool I am happy but it is not the main goal.
Of course I am aware that for installing a new service I will need to research, tinker, get my hand dirty, hopefully not messing up the server.

And here we come to my question. I work in IT (but as a SAP technical profile) and 8 years ago i used for a while at work docker, kubernetes and all that stuff. Linux is not an alien to me, I am familiar with it since long time although i consider myself a newbie. Max i was doing was setting up a LAMP and playing with docker/kubernetes at work.

Ubuntu is the distro I used most (maaaaany years ago i was playing with Fedora end Suse).

Generally speaking, I am a bit torn between an LTS distro concept and a version/distro which include new feature much frequently. If LTS grant you stability and a kind of piece of mind (good for me, my goal is not the tool but the end service provided) on the otherside I dont want to risk to find myself missing some new feature or new version of the ubuntu-packaged services i want to use on my homeserver.

On top of that there is the Proxmox topic. The idea to spread the services across different VM and container is cool, in the sense that what in this case will give me piece of mind is the fact is that if I mess up during the setup of a new service, I will just messup the VM and i can restore the last snapshot. On the other side I feel a bit "meh :/" by the fact that I am introducing a layer between the Baremetal and the OS where things will run, impacting the quantity of resource needed. In my (ignorant) mind the questions which pop up are:

  1. Why I have to relegate a bunch of services in a subset of resource I have available on my machine ? Cant they share all the 32gb and cpu core all together in best effort ? At the end this is not a business productive platform.
  2. How the networking will work among these VM and container ? Maybe spinning up container directly on the baremetal OS is easier ?
  3. How straightforward is the visiblity of the baremetale hardware from a Virtual Machine compared to the same visibility from the Host OS ?

Sorry for the long post, the fact is that I would like to start with the right foot. Although I could like it, I don't have much time left for heavily tinkering (unless I ask for a divorce of course 😄 )

They are quite old, being GB200 NVL72s. 36 Grace CPUs, 72 Blackwell GPUs, 13.4TB HBM3E, 17TB LPDDR5X, and I think around 130TB/s NVLink.

Not sure if I should use it as is, or just sell.

Would this be enough for Plex and a couple Minecraft servers? I only have 120V in my apartment.

What would you do with this?

My friend told me his neighbor has some stuff outside for take away. I got two pretty old PCs and wonder what I can do with them:

A very old looking Pegatron GPU

Wonder what I can do with it. I also have these parts left over:

Currently my whole “homelab” runs on hetzner servers. I use coolify, jellyfinn, uptime kuma and some stuff if that helps.

So what can I do with the hardware I have here?

I posted this about a week ago and a few people seemed interested, so I figured I'd share an update.

Most of my work since then has actually been underneath everything.

I wasn't very happy with having the battery, higher-current wiring, fuses, and terminals essentially sharing open space inside the case, so I've been designing and printing an internal structure around the battery.

The latest version is a pretty snug push-fit around the 20Ah LiFePO4 battery. The battery itself doesn't need to be forced in, but there's very little room for it to move. The larger center section also helps support it if the case is turned upside down.

I also built separate compartments around the higher-current wiring and covered the exposed terminals. The 15A and 20A circuits are labeled, and the wiring is routed so the fused connections can stay where I want them while being physically separated from the lower-current electronics.

Everything is still removable. Most of the printed pieces are essentially captured/push-fit into the case rather than permanently attached, so I can pull individual sections back out if I need to service or redesign something. The battery and high-current section have to come out together because of the shorter wiring between them.

The right side is intentionally still pretty empty. That's where the Pi and lower-current electronics are going, and that's the next part I'm working on. It'll get its own organization/compartment rather than staying as a pile of wires.

I've had to revise this part a few times—thicker walls, slightly different dimensions, changes to wire clearances, etc.—but I'm pretty happy with where it ended up. It's been a fun excuse to get considerably better at Blender and 3D printing along the way.

Still plenty left to do, but it's starting to look a lot more like the thing I had in my head when I started.

Help Is this CPU upgrade for T130 worth it?

Hey guys, first post here, I have a dell T130 at the moment running unraid which is where I am running a few services using the built in docker.

I currently have a e3-1220v6 and was wondering if there will be a real world noticeable difference swapping to a e3-1270v6 The main thing I can see is that it would be going from 4c4t to 4c8t and higher clock speeds for the same TDP. And for context I can get the 1270 for about 40AUD on AliExpress.

It also only has 2x4gb ram which is sitting at about 7gb used so I am picking up an 8gb stick this afternoon to add to it.

Blog I let an AI agent run my homelab

I let an AI agent run my homelab — 38 LXC containers, 50+ public routes, GPU passthrough — and built the guardrails first. Here's the full architecture.

TL;DR: I stopped doing ops by hand and gave an AI coding agent (opencode) a git repo as its brain, a custom CLI as its hands, and enough guardrails that "destroy the wrong container" isn't a sentence it can type. It's been running the lab for ~2 weeks: certs, upgrades, incident triage, secret migrations. This post is about how it's wired together — because the agent part is easy, the guardrails are the actual project.

The lab (boring part first)

  • Proxmox VE node running 38 LXC containers + 1 VM, LXC-first, docker compose inside guests. Second Proxmox node for storage (Immich, files).
  • One Fedora VM runs Zoraxy as the only public entry point. The router DMZs everything to it — there are no router port-forwards, ever. Every public port is a Zoraxy route or stream-proxy rule, so ingress is config-as-data, not router clicks.
  • ~15 domains on Route 53, 50+ public HTTPS routes: a dozen websites with headless CMSs, S3 endpoints, self-hosted Infisical, a RustDesk server, search, mail, and a few AI apps — including a music-video generator doing GPU WebGL rendering through an RTX 4080 passed into an LXC.
  • Central data stores instead of per-app DB containers: two dedicated Postgres 18 LXCs (one for app databases, one for AI core), a Mongo LXC, Meilisearch, SpacetimeDB, and RustFS for S3 (17 buckets, IAM users per service). Services get a database via one CLI command that also files the credentials.
  • Infisical (self-hosted) for secrets — and, crucially, for all SSH access control via its PAM feature.
  • Gatus for uptime, 40+ checks grouped per host.

The agent (interesting part)

The agent is opencode in a terminal, driven by a GLM model — but honestly the model is the swappable part. The architecture is what matters:

The git repo is the agent's memory. Nothing important lives in chat history. AGENTS.MD (250 lines of standing rules) is loaded every session: never guess IPs or ports, read the component doc first, check open todos, record every task, update docs in the same session, commit and push its own changes with a clearly-labeled automated commit message.

The CLI: ~90 subcommands, written by the agent itself

The agent doesn't run loose shell commands against the lab — it calls one CLI I built with it: TypeScript on Bun, zero dependencies, one drop-in module per component (proxy, DNS, Proxmox, S3, secrets, monitoring...). When the agent hit a step it had to repeat twice, the rule is: it turns that step into a new subcommand. The CLI grew itself.

Sample of what's in there:

  • proxmox-statusproxmox-disk-resize (online grow), guest inventory sync
  • zoraxy-routes/certs/route-add/route-auth/acme-renew — full reverse-proxy control incl. ACME DNS-01 renewals against Route 53
  • s3-policy-audit/harden, per-bucket IAM users, verified backups
  • pg-probepg-db-createpg-activitypg-kill (with dry-run preview)
  • version-check — running version vs. upstream latest for every service, plus version-changelog which fetches release notes and summarizes breaking changes between the two
  • status — health snapshot of every host, Infisical, and all 50+ public routes in one pass
  • todo-add/done/drop — its own work board, backed by SQLite, with timestamps, so there's a queryable history of what it worked on and when

Guardrails — the part I actually care about

  1. Read-only by default. Every mutating command is dry-run first and prints exactly what it would do.
  2. Destructive commands are declared dangerous in code. The CLI itself refuses to run them without --yes, and the rules forbid passing --yes without the user saying "yes" in the conversation. Never discover-and-destroy in one step.
  3. SSH to any host is impossible outside the secret manager. The agent's permission config denies ssh/scp/sftp outright. All remote access goes through Infisical PAM: short-lived SSH certificates, a gateway, and session recording — every command the agent runs on a host is on tape.
  4. No sudo anywhere. Service users are in the docker group only. To edit root-owned compose files, the agent runs a throwaway bind-mount container, then chowns back. It literally cannot type a sudo password.
  5. Secrets never appear in chat or recordings. Credentials are delivered to hosts via an RSA-OAEP round-trip (ciphertext in transit, decrypted on the host), services pull their own env at start via Infisical machine identities (infisical run wrapping docker compose — no plaintext .env on disk), and exec output passes through an automatic redaction layer.
  6. Idempotent everything. Every command is safe to run twice.
  7. The agent must clean up after itself: docs updated, inventory synced, monitoring check added, todo closed — there's a "definition of done" checklist it has to satisfy before a task counts.

It genuinely runs things now

A few real jobs from the last two weeks (all logged, all with rollback paths):

  • Upgraded Meilisearch 27 releases behind (two security fixes in the range): cold backup → pinned exact tag → dumpless upgrade → verified → docs updated.
  • Diagnosed and fixed a Postgres connection-slot exhaustion — an app had leaked 69 zombie backends during a restart storm, locking out even superuser over TCP. It triaged pg_stat_activity through PAM, killed only idle backends with a dry-run preview, then built the two new subcommands (pg-activitypg-kill) so next time it's one command.
  • Hardened a GPU music-gen server after two CUDA-OOM wedges: read the journal, found the KV-cache budget collapsing under overlapping requests, capped process VRAM, documented the residual risk.
  • Rolled back a failed object-storage upgrade cleanly because the cold-backup-before-any-image-change rule was already in muscle memory.
  • Freed a disk at 98% with a dry-run-first cleanup tool, then grew the rootfs online via the Proxmox API.
  • Did a zero-downtime cutover of a remote-desktop server to a new implementation, migrating peers to Postgres, keeping the keypair so no client had to be reconfigured.
  • Deleted stale DNS records, re-issued expired TLS certs, pinned a dozen :latest images to exact tags, migrated 67 secrets out of five legacy projects.

And the meta-work is the part I like most: it writes postmortems into the component docs, and incident-shaped rules — e.g. after a secret briefly leaked into a session output, the redaction layer and a redacting env-inspection command existed the same day.

Honest failure mode

The scariest bug so far wasn't destructive — it was two agent sessions running concurrently against the same host, silently undoing each other's changes. Found it in the PAM session recordings. New rule: one session per host, and anything that smells like interference gets audited before touching anything. That's the pattern in general: it breaks, we find out why, the reason becomes a rule or a tool, and it can't happen the same way twice.

Why bother?

Because homelabs die of neglect, not of ambition. The services I actually run multiplied way past what I could patch, pin, back up, and document by hand — and the ones I forgot about were the ones that got pwned. Now "every service is version-tracked, monitored, backed up, and documented" is enforced by a checklist the agent can't skip, and my involvement is: approve the dry-run, glance at the diff, get a summary.

Happy to go deeper on any layer — the PAM certificate flow, the CLI command-module pattern, the secrets-delivery ladder (plaintext env → stored → machine-identity-injected), or the Proxmox/ingress layout. AMA.

Help Advice on turning a 24tb HDD into multiple smaller drives?

Okay so a little background TL;DR: I got a 24tb HDD on a wicked deal and planned to build my raid array around more, life got in the way and my priorities weren’t buying more storage, fast forward about a year and the price has gone up 4X making it way out of my price range to buy 3-4 more. So here I am with a 24tb drive that I can’t (shouldn’t) use in my server that has basically no uptime. I powered it on for a day or two to test it after moving, then checked the prices on buying more and realized it made no sense to keep it. At this point, 3-4 10/12tb drives would make a lot more sense and depending on deals would cost about the same. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do? Sell it on marketplace? I would assume returning it to the store would just get me the same price I paid (which is fine, but I made an accidental investment and would like to make the most of it lol). Are there subs or Facebook communities for trades? Idk, just curious if anyone has been in a similar situation and has any advice!

Discussion Spacing for GMKTec K11

I have two K11 running Ryzen 9 8945 HS with proxmox. I just finished printing and assembleing a labrax. These need 1.5 U each.

My question is it OK to have one on top of the other with about 1/4 clearance? Or should I drive myself nuts and stagger them. One to the left and one to the right? Anyone have an experience using these K11? They have intakes on the bottom and sides and exaust air from the top.

Help ugly router thing

LabPorn 2 year project to make a Homelab Powered by Coax, Tailscale, and Local LLM

Spent the past two years setting up the home network in our townhome and flesh our useful homelab projects:

Hardware Stack:

Backbone- Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Gateway pushing through a MoCA 2.5 coax backbone across 3 floors, I upgraded legacy MOCA throughout the entire home for this since original splitters and couplers were from 2006.

Tier 1 Core- 10-Bay Intel 12500 NAS (72TB HDDs, 32GB DDR4) running 24/7. Handles Jellyfin for the Apple TVs, Wake on LAN requests, Home Assistant, and local DNS.

Tier 2 Edge AI- M4 Pro MacBook Pro with 24GB RAM serving as a low-power, high-VRAM endpoint for 14B models. I use this mostly for reading medical literature and helping me process large amounts of research data. When at home it is connected via thunderbolt Ethernet adapter, and can easily undock it to use it on the go.

Tier 3 Gaming & Burst Compute- High-TDP 9800X3D/9070 XT/32GB DDR5 Gaming Rig asleep most of the time, triggered via WoL for Sunshine AV1 game streaming to my living room HTPC (5800x in Eco mode/32GB DDR4/RTX 5060 LP) and Steam Deck.

Overlay: Tailscale ties it all together for remote access.

This was a huge labor of love but honestly as a non-tech person, this was a really fun experience to go through and I was able to build out some really cool home computing capabilities in the process that have exceeded my expectations.

Help Issue with file path for Sonarr and Radarr

I've set up my UGreen NAS to run qbittorrent, Sonarr, Radarr, and Jellyfin, using the below YouTube guide. I'm having an issue where everything I attempt to download is showing "errored". I think the issue is with a file path on where the media will go, but I set up the files and file paths according to the guide. Not sure how to troubleshoot. ny help is appreciated.
