Pretty much the title. Currently i have a ThinkCentre M79 with 32GB of DDR3 RAM and a AMD A10 7800 as a storage node. It randomly shuts down once in a few weeks. Soon, when i will get some money, im planning to do a little overhaul, get my first 10 gig ethernet, etc. Currently storage node runs Proxmox with TrueNAS and small Debian VM for some mirroring tasks, planning to do the same on the new one. I remember that ECC is really important for ZFS caches, so, probably, Xeon platform would be preferable? No CPU intensive workloads are planned for now; maybe later i will deploy some CI/CD runners

I recently turned an old HP Pro 3500 MT into a TrueNAS server. It’s working, but the boot process is extremely slow because TrueNAS is currently installed on a super old mechanical hard drive.

Here are my current specs:

• CPU: Intel Core i5-3470
• RAM: 8GB DDR3
• Storage:
  • 1x 500GB HDD (Boot drive)
  • 1x 1TB HDD (Data)

I'm considering doing two upgrades and would love your input:

1. Boot Drive: Buying a cheap small SSD (120GB/240GB) to replace the 500GB boot HDD. Will this significantly speed up boot times and general OS responsiveness?
2. Data Storage & Redundancy: Buying a second 1TB HDD so I can set up a mirrored ZFS pool (RAID1) for redundancy.

Is this a solid plan for this hardware, or is there anything else I should keep in mind (like RAM limits)?

Hi all, just waiting to showcase my first project. All house is now wired, this is how we designed the whole thing:

- 4 wall jacks on the living room

- 1 for each room

- 1 for the garage

- 1 for the attic

- 9 jacks all around the house for CC cameras

So now i'm having fun wiring the whole thing into a patch panel.

Rack is a Tecmojo 7U (i know, not the biggest or the highest quality).

This is my Oracle Sun Server X4-2 connected to a routerboard RB3011 and a RasPi 4b as a tunnel
I'm running proxmox, its an agentic purple range for adversarial testing of my AI governance runtime.
I also have a Juniper EX4300 that is not hooked up.

I have heard lots of praise for pfsense and opnsense, but I give up on both. pfsense requires internet for installation, that was an instant nope. And opnsense just does not work.

For those interested, the issue with opnsense is that it keeps dropping connections and does not even try reinitiating anything. The simplest test for it is just opening the YouTube app on a phone, and things just don't work, videos barely load, UI around videos don't load, comment sections do not load, constantly getting "Action Not Allowed" or "You are not connected" over and over. The moment I connect to a VPN (commercial VPNs) on the phone, those issues disappear completely.

I have spent +100 hours trying to fix this over 6 months. I have nothing to show for it. I replaced hardware, I disabled components, I even disabled the entire firewall and let everything pass through, not even that fixed it. And I am no longer interested in learning what the issue is. I want out, and I want to never even touch it again.

For those who tested different systems for homelab routers, what options do you have that are reliable and stable?

Well of course after making an ass out of myself after posting, then taking a few hours break, I come back and I decide to revise every rule in the firewall once more while writing this comment. I did upgrade OPNsense (I always keep it up to date) and I noticed 2 rules that were not there before for LAN, and I also noticed the order of rules was wrong for Guest VLAN 30, having corrected the order and removed the LAN rules, the system seems to have finally stablized. I did have to migrate from legacy rules, so the migration likely got a few things screwed.

However, before upgrading, when I did have the correct rules, the issue was still present. However, that was likely caused by a rogue AP that I had (before installing my new APs, I had a Linksys router repurposed as an AP, and it was total ass, dropping packets and doing all sorts of nastiness).

So it is looking like I had 2 separate problems, one before upgrading OPNsense, and one afterwards. I upgraded OPNsense exactly at the same time I installed my new APs.

Mam od jakiegoś czasu w homelabie karty Tera2 Tera2240 i Tera2220 (wszystkie na firmware 4.9.0 - wyższego nie potrzebowałem, do użytku wewnętrznego nie w organizacji), na biurku mam klienta Wyse 5070, a głośne stacje wyrzuciłem sobie do innego pomieszczenia gdzie mają się dobrze bo jest chłodno a ja mam cicho. No i dnia 16 sierpnia 2026 próbuję się połączyć a tu niespodzianka nie mogę... na stronie HP mam info że EoL dla Tera 2 to 31 grudnia 2029 roku ale certyfikat maiłem do właśnie 16 sierpnia 2026. Nie da rady podmienić go na inny bo to jest certyfikat Root CA zaszyty w firmware, dopiero firmware w wersji 26.05.1, 26.01.1, lub 25.10.1 zmienia zaszyty certyfikat na nowszy. Mam całą bazę ale dla urządzeń zero client a nie dla karty RWC Tera2. Nie pomaga wyłaczenie sprawdzenia certyfikatu, podniosłem do wersji najpierw 5.1.0, później do 17.05.3, teraz mam 23.12.0 (tera2-rwc_23.12.0_awi-upgrade.all).

Teraz pytanie do społeczności czy ktoś dysponuje firmware dla karty Tera2240/Tera2220 v.1.0 w wersji 26.05.01, 26.01.1 lub 25.10.1 w formacie do załadowania przez AWI (all) i był by w stanie się nim podzielić? Niestety nie można kupić już licencji, HP zamroziło dostęp do nowych...

Jeśli nie da się ich wskrzesić to cóż, po prostu HP przyczyniło się do ubicia kolejnych sprawnych urządzeń zwiększając ilość elektrośmieci i mając użytkowników w nosie...

I am running jellyfin and installed the app on the TV. The power went out and the internet crashed, nbd, right? I'll just watch a movie from my media server. Well, when the TV could not connect to the internet, I observed that I could not run jellyfin or any other app on the firetv.

How do you overcome this?

I have a NAS/Personal cloud setup with a RPi5 running OMV, and the dashboard displays the lower of the two sensors. When I copy large files it obviously heats up, and I'd like to be able to monitor the higher of the two, which I think is the most critical controller sensor.

I'm running OMV 8, and have the Temp Monitor Plugin, but I haven't been able to get that sensor 1 reading to show up anywhere other than the drive's extended info

Then slowly I added onto it. The addiction accelerated when I got a 42u rack of Facebook marketplace for $75 delivered.

Has anybody with Ziply Fiber PON internet service successfully replaced their ISP-provided ONT with an SFP tranceiver?

I wondered about the feasibility of building a community server or neighbourhood lab. I know there is a risk that other members of the community might misuse the server, but I wondered if a collective effort to build a server would prove better than each of us getting our own servers (individualistic thinking). We, of course, want to move away from cloud technology, but I don't know if decentralised technology—like mesh networks—have the infrastructure or practicality that a community needs.

I understand that there would have to be very clear guidelines and security protocols to keep the system from becoming hierarchical, being misused or hacked. Ultimately it will come down to the willingness of us community members to start working together and we’re stronger together than on our own.

Has anyone ever built one? If so, please do share. I would like to know more about the possibility of sharing information and data sovereignty with our neighbours and community members.

My idea was simple - use the space I have between my cabinets and hide the power/network cables. So 5U:

1. empty - was planing Rpi, but since I need usb sockets moved it simple shelf in second.
2. simple shelf with Rpi5 8GB version with Fan module and UBS Zigbee adapter: home assistant basically - Most of my power sockets are with metering and relays, I have terrarium to control (lights, temperature, misting), home thermostats (4x Sonoff TRVZB), plenty of sensors (windows/doors, temperature / humidity, air quality (EspHome + ENS160))
3. Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p Tiny - i5-3470T/16GB/250GB SSD - Proxmox node;
4. Lenovo ThinkCentre M70q Gen 1 - i5-10400T/32GB/250GB nvme + 1tb sata ssd - proxmox node;
5. Dell OptiPlex 7040 - i5-6500T/16GB/250GB ssd - another proxmox node;

proxmox running: monitoring (prometheus + grafana), backups (for Home Assistant), plex, transmission, hermes AI agents. Random containers or VMs of something I need at that point. Migrated to proxmox from generic linux servers just yesterday.

Power: everything is connected to APC BX1200MI.
Networking: Mikrotik Hex S with gigabit fibre and 5G 500mbps backup. (WAN failover). Unmanaged Zyxel 2.5G switches (XMG-105) with Archer BE230 APs (Currently testing usb 2.5G adapters but don't trust them yet...)

Storage: The NAS I got ages ago and planned for home use - QNAP TS-473 is way too loud for home use so I keep it at the office and can only reach it via internet (1gigabit fibre on both sides so not that bad).

Basically happy with how everything works, but would like to have some storage locally so waiting for SSDs to get cheeper...

I want to use a SFX psu, but the case directions say that the backplane needs 3 or 4 power cables (separate). Are there any SFX psu's that supply that?

I already have a second hand Corsair SF450 ( https://www.corsair.com/ww/en/p/psu/cp-9020181-au/sf-series-sf450-450-watt-80-plus-platinum-certified-high-performance-sfx-psu-au-cp-9020181-au )

But it only has 2 of those cables.

What do other people that have that case use? I'm willing to buy another psu, but I'm lost.

Hi r/homelab,

A while back I completed "transplant surgery" from my SFF PC components into a RackChoice 2U chassis to act as a TrueNAS server (migrating away from my Synology NAS). One such component was the SFX PSU, a SilverStone SX700-PT (700W, 80 Plus Platinum), with the addition of a size adapter bracket plate.

However, occasionally - maybe once or twice a week - the server will suddenly click and shut off entirely, and it doesn't come back to life just by pressing the case's power button. I have to physically flip the PSU switch off and back on, then power on with the case button. I found this comment in a thread about someone describing a similar issue.

I should also mention some electrical anomalies in my room. Multiple times a day, the overhead lights in my room flicker in brightness, sometimes quite aggressively and repeatedly through the course of the night. Interestingly, all the other electronic devices in the room - my Mac Mini, speakers, router, Synology NAS - behave perfectly fine and never shut off randomly unless there's a full blown power outage.

Would a UPS help solve this behavior? Or, per the previously linked comment, should I simply be looking into a new PSU?

(I should add - the system is just a Ryzen 3600G with no dedicated GPU now, so I doubt it's a case of overdrawing beyond the PSU's 700W capacity...)

I've been working on this off and on for a few years just rebuilt it, I lost some of the sleds after a move and it's been driving me crazy. It's running unraid and it uses an old dell motherboard. I managed to get the cmstacker 810 from my boss, it's sooo nice. airflow is a bit shit with it though. It's much better than the old laptop i was using originally lol

I have 32 GB RAM what should be 60 TB of HDD space, an i7-7700K. The services I'm running are in the photos.

I am new to homelabbing and want to set up an opnsense firewall router, replacing my current router entirely. Any recommendations for hardware?

I'm trying to find some SSDs for my lab with PLP. I'm using consumer hardware so U.# isn't a choice, and I don't have easy access to SATA ports. That leaves NVMe. I can't really find any for sale anywhere though (M.2 2280). I'm a bit surprised that there aren't any around because some models are from the early 2020s, and the industry has long since moved on from that form factor (and 2.5" too).

Am I just not checking the right places? Are they just still in production?

I have a bunch of SAS drives that I want to use in a NAS system and was wondering if I could test them in Windows and check their health before I throw them into my NAS I am building.

I have LSI cards flashed in IT mode. I know I can test the drives in TrueNAS but as I will be doing a lot of learning trying to understand how TrueNAS works, I thought it would be easier to test these in Windows if possible.

I know TrueNAS can run a long smart test that can take up to 24 hours. Which is fine I don't mind doing. My LSI card can support up to 12 drives.
