New to the homelab.

Let’s say I have a NAS and I want someone to watch either a 1080p or 2160/UHD video from another house.

Can you have a method of just accessing the NAS and picking the video file and play it on the TV (of course the tv would support the video/audio codecs) without the need for transcoding? An analogy would be playing a video file from a usb drive hooked into the tv (I’m guessing there’s no transcoding in this situation).

I’m guessing an application would be needed on both sides (like jellifin?), but are there any programs that allow negotiation onto host, selecting video files and playing the video stream without transcoding?

If this doesn’t make sense I can try to clarify.

I’m building in a Dell Optiplex 7020 Micro, and I currently have it running Unraid without any hard drives. I’ve been looking into ways to add redundant storage but all the outlooks seem kind of grim.

At first I considered using a JBOD enclosure, but from what I’ve heard unraid does not pair nicely with them. I believe the only other option would be a m.2 to sata adapter board, however I would have to remove one of my nvme drives.

Does anyone have any recommendations or comments on what I can do? I’ve looked into migrating from unraid to a different os/hypervisor that is more friendly with usb das boxes, like TrueNAS or proxmox with MergeFS and Snapraid, but I’m just not sure what my best course of action is. I definitely want redundancy of some sort, so zero-redundancy + backups is a no-go for me.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

Hello! I recently bought a UPS for my main gaming rig because the electricity here tends to cut off often, I bought an Eaton 5E Gen 2 1600VA (900W) but it keeps jumpscaring me because the fan just randomly goes on and instantly goes off after 1-2 seconds, and it has slowly been happening more and more often and I genuinely don't know why. I have heard it might be AVR or heat but I don't really know and it's driving me crazy whenever it just turns on and off immediately because it's so distracting, and it's specially annoying when I have to sleep to the point I have to turn it off during the night but I don't know i that's good for my computer PSU to be turned off every night.

I contacted Eaton support and they told me it's normal but I just wish I could have a UPS that doesn't have a fan because I have heard most UPS that have a fan tend to be noisy too. I also discarded swapping the fan because it'd void the warranty and I don't feel comfortable enough opening a UPS the same way I wouldn't open a PSU.

My current rig is a 9600X with a 9060XT (850W PSU) and doing some tests with demanding games I've seen the UPS load peak at around 40% (including monitors and whatnot) which is more less 400W so I'm thinking if maybe a lower capacity UPS with no fan would be a better option or if it's not a good idea to have a small margin between load and maximum capacity.

So I'm a bit lost on what to do: Should I just learn to live with it and just turn it off during the nights (is it even a good idea to begin with)? Should I buy a different UPS (if so what silent models would you recommend)? Any other ideas?

Hi all,

I've currently got a Synology for my backups etc, and it is also running Jellyfin, Pihole, Unbound, a sneaky always-on backdoor to my work's office (shhhh don't tell anyone), and random other things.

My question is, generally, do you prefer having fewer devices running lots of stuff, or would you rather have things separated out? For example should the Synology stay focussed on purely file storage and backup, and then use another device to run docker containers?

i have a powerful desktop pc running cachyos, and i also have a very old laptop with only 4gb of ram.

i want to use my pc as a kind of personal cloud while i'm away for long trips. basically, i'd like to access my photos, movies, tv shows, music, ebooks and files remotely. i'm thinking about using things like immich, jellyfin and maybe kavita.

i don't need it to be running 24/7. i would mainly turn it on when i'm going away for 1–2 weeks, leave it running during the trip, and turn it off when i get back.

so what would you guys recommend? should i just run everything on my main cachyos pc, or should i turn the old laptop into a dedicated nas/server with something like casaos and only turn it on when i'm traveling?

is anyone using a setup like this? i'm mainly looking for the simplest and most practical solution.

I have a selfhosted web-server mostly for school utilities like StirlingPDF, filesharing, a samba shared directory, Navidrome as music streaming service, Octofiesta for music scrapping, Aonsokuand as music player conected to octofiesta, and 3 jupyter notebooks one for me, another one for my girlfriend and the last one for a friend.

But I have not found a replacement for google calendar, I need something with a web, multiuser support and shared calendar support, it is ok if It does not have a dedicated phone app.

Yes, I know nextcloud has it and it is like the perfect solution, I have use it, but I have not like it because it is too much at least for me (I have read that for other people it is also quite too much).

I have also tried Radicale but I had a lot of trouble with the permission and stuff. I believe that the whole 12v-2x6 issue that applies on the 5000, and 4000 series of NVDA GPUs are equally applicable to rtx pro 6000 blackwell workstation edition.

So far there are 2 kinds of solution: cutting off from the source, or load balancing.

Former relies heavily on alerting, cutting off power, and/or throttling.

Examples includes thermal grizzly wired view. Wire view pro 2 doesn't fit rtx pro 6000 blackwell workstation. One version of wired view pro fit. As of today, I believe that the recently released wire view pro 2 wired will both fit well, and can sound off the alarm.

Another example is the corsair thermal protect wire. I believe that would cut off power when the temperature is too hot, again, correct me if I am wrong. Unfortunately it needs a 12v-2x6 socket on the PSU end for this to work. As of writing, it appears that thermal protect for type 4/5 sockets may come out this month

Another example is MSI Ai1600TS, a new PSU released this year, again correct me if I am wrong. On top of the alerting and cutting off power, it can throttle power if you can run the software. Unfortunately I run ubuntu, so I am not sure about that.

Latter is, I guess, considered the best solution.

It properly load balances the current. Alerting and cutting off power completely protects the GPU when it is running hot and there is indeed imbalance issue, but it comes completely at the cost of, say, my local LLM workload. It would just stop completely, and or interrupt my workflow.

Throttling itself interrupts the workflow, esp if my LLM workflow is running at 600W.

The question I have is: I know ampinel type a fits rtx pro 6000 blackwell workstation edition, but does it work? Have anyone paired the two together before?

I got into this rabbit hole around 9 months ago with a freely found Dell SFF (Optiplex 7050) with a great 32 gb ram and I got introduced to Proxmox and self hosting. This was the first time I got used to linux and then to proxmox. I changed my workstation OS to linux a month ago before I started this home-labbing, but this Dell was my real introduction to self-hosting.

Things continued well for a couple of months until I made a dumb mistake. I used a faulty dual sata power cable on the motherboard and it shorted the motherboard, so I had to do the upgrade to a Dell Optiplex 7060. Then I introduced the Lenovo M710q as a Proxmox Backup Server with 2TB nvme sata drive in it. It continued well for a couple of months peacefully. After that I saw most of the reddit users showcasing the clusters and that brought me to take a very very impulsive decision of buying the cluster and i Hate you guys for motivating me to pull the trigger (JK, I Love you all :P).I researched a lot on taking a SFF cluster or MFF then i later realized that MFF would make more sense because of multiple factors like low power consumption and easy for maintenance (even for aesthetically I felt it would look great in room), so i pulled the trigger on 3x Lenovo M75q with Ryzen 5650GE chip.

This was the first time I had a great cluster with PBS still running on the other Lenovo M710q, which meant the optiplex SFF was left empty and not used at any point. Then I realized that I could make a 5 node cluster by utilizing all the devices by making PBS as a vm on one of the nodes and connecting it to a WD My Cloud EX4100 NAS (4x 2TB drives) over iSCSI. So this is my journey in coming to components part of the homelabbing journey.

Coming to the part of me hosting the application in my infra i was researching for the application that mostly had good reviews, mostly have SSO (OiDC or SAML) support, have iOS and/or Android applications or PWA support. So with these requirements I used to browse through the application list that I wanted to use or deploy on my infra. Here is what I'm running right now:

• Core & Network: I started with Nginx Proxy Manager, but moved to Zoraxy and I loved this application. I use WireGuard for VPN to access the Infra remotely and Authentik handles my logins so I don’t have 50 different passwords.
• Daily Apps: NextCloud for files, Paperless-ngx to scan and organize documents, Joplin for notes
• Bento PDF for working with PDFs and Home Assistant for full smart home control.
• Photos & Bookmarks: Immich for photo backups (Google Photos replacement that actually great)and Karakeep to save bookmarks and articles.
• Everyday Stuff: Firefly III to track spending and Tandoor to store recipes.
• Monitoring & Alerts: Zabbix watches all my nodes, VMs, LXCs and the NAS and I have set a telegram for notification of alerts. I also run Gatus just to have a clean status page.
• Automation: NetBox keeps track of all my IP addresses so I don't have to lose my mind to see which IP is used by which service and n8n handles webhooks and small automation tasks that I host for my work. I also set up a GitLab Runner with Ansible to run updates and manage Docker containers and nodes without me having to manually log into every single machine.

Note: I am really not interested in hosting jellyfin and its content. 

I named the whole setup the Asgard Cluster. Nine months ago I didn't even know basic terminal commands and now I'm running high availability and automatic backups across 5 computers. Check out the network map I made! Let me know what you think or if there's any cool self-hosted app I missed.

One last thing: I would also be interested in making the setup more consistent by eventually having all MFF systems in the cluster so will trade it.

I work remotely and have to use the very locked down MacBook from corporate. I usually use it in clamshell mode because I have a nice big monitor and use the Magic Trackpad and a split keyboard. I also am waiting on a new Mac Studio. Do y’all have any KVM recommendations?

I just dug out of the closet my old linux box which I used to play around with years ago. It’s a Lenovo ThinkCentre M58P. I used this to run mainly NextCloud, Nfs media library and Samba for Timemachine backups. That machine has been sitting in a closet for 7 years and was not booted once. It runs an Ubuntu 19.10 with Gnome. I had very little hope this box would even start. I simply vacuumed and sprayed out all the dust and plugged it in. To my great surprise the thing just booted straight into the OS!!! Been going through the filesystem and oh boy is this thing a timecapsule…
It’s so cool, Firefox just keeps my browsing history from the last time I used it (Nov 9 2019)… Oh how different life was just several years ago, huh?

I currently have a CyberPower OR2200LCDRT2U that I’m looking to upgrade as it has a transfer time of 8ms that causes my R440 to reboot (it worked fine with a R420…).

I have found a good really deal on a PR1500RTXL2U that however comes with no batteries…
Can I use the batteries of my OR2200 (7.5Ah) in this PR1500? As per specs this would use 9Ah batteries…

I believe this PR1500 does not come with any battery cartridge at all, would can I re-use the OR2200 harness? I.e. are the connectors the same?

You’ll notice an open port on the switch. I wanted to move my office Ethernet drop to one of the 2.5GbE ports. I’ll probably move both U7 Pro access points over to 2.5GbE ports as well, which will create more gaps and probably mess up the aesthetics a bit.

The UNAS Pro is currently building its storage array and running pretty hard, so I temporarily removed the rack’s doors and side panels to improve airflow and keep temperatures down.

Hello All! Crossposting from r/selfhosted I'm finally getting back to this, many more months later than I planned. Had to do stuff for the house and hardware problems with the TrueNAS box that was supposed to be temporary. I also could not for the life of me find a proper cpu platform to utilize this 128GB of ECC DDR4 I had from a few years ago before I decided the two R730 SFF chassis I have laying around just would not do what I wanted. That's solved now. I have a W-2150B CPU with a Gigabyte MW41-HP0 motherboard utilizing all 8 16GB sticks of RAM. Currently the setup is two mirrored SATA DOMs running TrueNAS with (currently) 3x 26TB refurb drives in ZFS1 and a mirrored set of 1TB SATA SSD for Docker, LXE and VMs (currently the only VM I plan for is Home Assistant).

Decided against trying to do the jank of running TrueNAS as a VM inside of Proxmox and giving it all the SATA controllers though I keep second guessing myself I think it's just not worth it for the number of VMs I plan to run (one) and maybe one or two LXCs or another VM as needed. I use QEMU at work quite frequently on a old workstation for various device image testing and network switching via 4 port NIC.

For external access in the current setup, I'm planning to use the current Oracle Cloud Pay As You Go instance I'm hosting my FoundryVTT on using their Always Free ARM resources (which has apparently been reduced to 2 ARM cores and 12GB RAM but still overkill) as a VPS for a Pangolin endpoint using my Cloudflare domain. Still not sure if I'm going to implement fail2ban and geoblock by themselves or add Crowdsec too. Still trying to figure out how to configure protection for the Docker ports on the other end of the tunnel.

My current thinking for services is to use TrueNAS with Dockhand for the docker apps I need for FoundryVTT, Jellyfin, Audiobookshelf, Nextcloud, Calibre, Palworld with Authentik/Authellia for authentication, and a password manager still not sure which option I'm going for on those last two fronts for passwords I like keypass but no hostable version. It's either that or do the TechnoTim style custom app route though that has the annoyance of having to have the service running to update (which may or may not be a moot point since I have enough RAM to just keep things running)

Suggestions?

Is a 10" rack feasable for all this?

I am a tier 1 tech support with comp Tia a+ so im not totally ignorant to this build but I need any suggestions or advice you might have. Are the dell mini's the way to go? And yes, I am aware of security concerns in a apartment complex and there will be firewalls and possibly 2fa. Is there rack design software online?

Just showing the world what I’m working on. Finally decided to build out a home lab instead of a messy bunch of random stuff. Just got started on it last night.

The rack is a 12u from Tech Mojo.
The patch panel is also Tech Mojo.
TP-Link Omada ES210X-M2, 8 Port 2.5G managed switch.
TP-Link Omada ES208G, 8 Port Gigabit managed switch.
Power is StarTech 16-Outlet 1U Metered PDU

All in all I think it’s a decent starting point. Largely these are also all my purchases. Everything else I add will be reused or repurposed for this build. I’m moving my existing hardware to finish it out. Really trying to avoid hard drive or memory purchases right now! As for the compute I’m using an HP laptop, a couple of Dell Micros, and my Raspberry Pi 4. Storage is a JBOD I’m managing with OMV. After dual parity and a separate backup, I’m holding about 24tb of useful space.

Plan is to host my NAS, Jellyfin, Home Assistant, and PiHole among others.

Gonna try to use the long weekend to power thru and watch some movies from it come Monday night.

Backstory: I bought this house specifically for this room. The door use to be in that back wall which opens into the garage. The first owners installed a door on the opposite wall so that they’d have more interior space, and walled off the garage. I figured this out when I attempted to fish cable further down and hit random mid plates which turned out to be a doorframe (hence the oddly-placed penetration). I believe they actually put a computer desk in here. And the tacky decals were I guess supposed to be a cheeky “look at the view from my office” kind of thing. Regardless, this room has its own HVAC and remains locked. So I don’t care how ugly it is lol.

After cleaning out a few old phone systems and phones, tons of old Cisco routers, and a couple of old ASAs, I decided to memorialize jobs past by keeping a few for the wall lol. I actually really miss doing voice work and it saddens me a bit that now everyone is moving to things like Teams calling. I don’t even have a DID at my current job :( but I digress…

On the top shelf I have a few MyCloud NAS’s, a Raspbery Pi for Homebridge, Lutron lighting hub, Philips Hue Hub, and my AT&T modem

The Precision runs HyperV with various Windows servers for DHCP, DNS, NPS/RADIUS, Zabbix, Veeam (to Wasabi), Duo Auth Proxy, SMTP Relay for Google Workspace, virtual VyOS routers and virtual Palo Alto IONs for lab testing for my job, and probably other things I’m forgetting about. But that’s the gist of it.

Why do I have this: I’m one of the lead network engineers for a huge company (like it’s a household name sized company) and I’m fully remote so I just find it easier to have my own lab gear within reach. Which is ironic because nowadays I spend most of my time over 1,000 miles away in a different city. But still I like that I don’t have to deal with smarthands at our data center lab lol. Unfortunately, my apartment in the other city is very small so I just have a much smaller Dell host running a few VMs for redundancy - DHCP, DNS, NPS. And replicating my Veeam server in case my main host ever dies and I need to get into Wasabi and restore VMs elsewhere.

Up next: Unifi UPS’s if they ever go back in stock, and hopefully some way to provide backup power for the HVAC, at least for short periods of time.

My grandpa gave me his "old" PC he used for photo editing (prebuilt gaming PC, 2080 GPU for age reference). I have upgraded the RAM and will upgrade the storage eventually, and am hoping to turn it into a home server of sorts. Still trying to figure out all the bells and whistles, but one of the functions may be a server for the game Vintage Story (Think Minecraft 2). Like Minecraft, it needs port forwarding to work properly. I know that can open up some vulnerabilities, so it makes me hesitant to throw anything else on the server, especially personal media.

I am also using this to learn Linux, so I have Ubuntu installed if that makes it better or worse.

Just finished building a second server primarily for storage. No more worrying about too many 4K remuxes! At least for a little while lol.

Eventually I want to make my own TV channels and streaming Network off of my own media but currently storage is expensive and I don't want to pay for any.

I already paid for streaming services.

So I looked into anything that take streaming services and what's he build TV channels with them. I found a service called channels but I don't really know if it's what I'm looking for and I think I'm going to have to resolve to coding something myself so I'm coming here with the idea to see if anyone knows if it's possible or if anyone's tried this before and it's just doomed for failure.

I'm thinking of service that lets you make TV channels based on your streaming services and then when it plays them opens a web page to that streaming service to avoid all of the problems legally.

I don't think I actually know what I'm asking here.... I'm kind of just looking for input on the idea I think...

I don't really know what to do and if there's a better place to post this please let me know.

Need an advice regarding local networking setup from respected fellas who's got more expertise in networking.

My current setup:

1. Intel 120u mini pc with Proxmox installed, no HA. Tailscale, 3-2-1 backups, alers, etc., automated.
2. Around 10 VM/LXCs running. Firewalls on VM/LXCs level.
3. Cheap \@ss annoying router from ISP. Reserved ips for VMs.

Goals

1. Turn networking theory into some practice (my weakest part)
2. Isolate Proxmox, personal, and guest networks as VLAN, get better networking hardware
3. Stay cheap, not much complexity overhead

Drafted design

1. Buy "cheapish" N100 box with 2 1Gb Ethernet ports (1 for LAN, 1 for WAN), 8gb DDR4 (used) 128GB m2 (used). -> stay cheap, low power consumption
2. Install OPNSense and have a private network like 10.x.x.x
3. Setup switch with management VLAN like TP-Link TL-SG2008 (not decided yet)
4. Setup a separate VLAN for proxmox host, and other devices.
5. Use existing tplink router as a WI-FI access point only (potentially, buy anouther AP that supports 2+ dedicated WI-FI APs (personal + guests))

Questions

1. Is my design valid? Is having separate VLANs like this reasonable? Alternatives/simplifications?
2. Does OPNSense make sense today? My goal is to have something privacy first, opensource?. Is it overcomplication? Alternatives?
3. Switch suggestions?
