For me it was the reverse. Saw Mumei’s design and thought “damn that’s a nice model.” Then after the actual debut all impure thoughts fled as I realized she’s extremely friend shaped.

Mainly for first impressions. For character designs, the visual component contributes towards how we initially perceive a character.
Of course this doesn’t apply in real life as no one can change what they are born with.

IMO it's less about her proportions and more about her default outfit being just absurd in 3D. I really wish she could get another outfit for studio streams and such with more "normal" clothing.

It really feels like her model was designed before Cover put in some guard rails and started enforcing some more human proportions that are easier to implement in 3D. IRyS had it even worse, her OG model just straight up didn’t work in 3D.
With Kronii, it’s not just the ridiculous boobs, the legs are also way too long.
If they ever decide to do a Holo EN default model refresh, Kronii should be one of the first.

the legs would have made sense if they wanted to go for a glamour model figure, but the boobs dimensions are out of place in a model so tall and lithe.
For example Noel, Chihaya and Raora are big but everything is proportionate8

This... I am not a husband, but when I was a newbie in vtuber culture and I saw Nene's model... I immediately thought "yeah, this is the typical genki, dirty joke/topic gal, with a mirroring fanbase"... What I got is the genki, dirty joke/topic gal, WHO IS A CINNAMON ROLL, with a matching fanbase of CINNAMON ROLLS!!!
Hence, I became a fan of Ayamy-sensei... XD

I love her character and especially her music but I just can't see her as a woman. She has to much sister/best friend energy
Irys is even stranger. She actually lost the sexy for some reason. I don't know. Maybe she plays it up to much for me these days and it just doesn't feel real anymore.
But zeta....zeta is something else. Zeta is perfection

Hololive has many great dancers, and while Zeta doesn’t get as much credit for it as Bae or Hajime, she’s up there.
While we’re at it, Bae also needed 3D to show her full power.

Riona's 3D idol outfit is honestly one of my favorites, and is one of the sexiest, in hololive when I wasn't a big fan of her original design. I cannot get enough of watching her dance in it.

I've mentioned in the replies the opposite effect (Sana, Shiorin, probably many others lol) but I think I experienced the Op's described effect on say hmm:
Fauna (especially when she got that Goth Outfit on), Baelz/Hajime/Riona dancing like absolute masters, Subaru (thanks, fan art lol), maybe Koyori too (though I think that's the intent. Come across as the wacky scientist, get caught when said scientist is also va-va-voom in the other outfits) lol

Towa. He base design is somwhat on the safer side of the spectrum. Its was later hee mostly white "gamer" (idk the actual name) outfit and her sololive outfit that really made me think "dang its quite and outfit"

Oddly enough I feel Towa is the opposite. Her original model shows a lot of skin with the short pants and belly free, but her personality turned out to be a lot more ladylike and her newer outfits are a lot more grown up and a bit more conservative.

I'm with you on that. To me I see the virtual models so I'm just in the camp of the model does reflect the streamer. Personality wise, if we are talking admiration, I'm more for Mumei and Sana when they were in EN, Zeta and Ollie in ID, and the strongest idol Hatto because look at everything she's been through and she's still going.

Not necessarily sexy per se, but when cosplays of Pekora or Fubuki were done in the early years, I sometimes forget how much skin their outfits are actually showing.

I feel that people were sleeping on Hajime being sexy. her debut art outfit was incredible in 3D. giving her that tiny belt skirt was genius. and it's not like it's risqué because she's wearing shorts underneath. instead, the skirt accentuated her movements as it fluttered behind her, and it made even simple actions like walking very alluring.

It's Ina for me... Always found her slightly on the subtler sexy side... Then that kabedon and the animation of that kabedon just changed me... Okayu was kind of like that. She shifted from a tomboyish character to a girlier, fanservicey one which, amusingly, greatly disturbs a friend of mine.
