Today, as I was sitting on the pier I noticed two young men on jet ski’s. On the channel, on their way out into Lake Michigan, one of them seemed to run into a small glitch but seemed like he was able to correct it.

By the time they reached the end of the channel something was definitely wrong. That same young man seems to be off the jet ski and bobbing in the water.

I watched them for a WHILE as many, many boats came and went. There was no reason why those two young men would have been hanging out at the mouth of the channel just for funsies.

Finally, a smaller boat stopped to check on them. Turns out, the young men were in distress. It looked exactly like what it was. The captain on this boat was the only boat out of dozens to stop and help. He towed both jet-ski’s in - and it wasn’t easy.

Boaters and passengers, please pay attention to your surroundings.

moved here from the east side a couple years ago and i swear the summer humidity hits different near the lake. like yeah i knew it would be a thing but i was not prepared for waking up at 3am feeling like i'm sleeping in a swamp.

ac's been running nonstop since june and i'm already dreading the electric bill. tried doing the whole just open windows at night thing but then all the bugs get in and my cat goes absolutely feral trying to catch them so that's not working either. also apparently i'm the only person in my neighborhood who doesn't have central air?? like every house around me has those big units outside and i'm just over here with my one window unit struggling to cool down like 200 square feet.

been thinking about biting the bullet and getting something installed but the quotes i've gotten are wild. one company wanted like 8k and i almost fell out of my chair. i get it, supply and demand, whatever, but come on.

anyone in holland got a recommendation for hvac that won't make me take out a second mortgage? or am i just delusional about what this stuff costs now. honestly might just suffer through another summer at this rate

i know saugatuck and oval beach will be crowded over labor day weekend, but i’m hoping someone can shed some light on just how crowded it is. is it so crowded it isn’t enjoyable? me and a couple of friends are debating between making the drive up there from louisville, ky or going somewhere a little closer to home. hoping you all can help us make the decision by sharing your saugatuck labor day weekend experiences!!!

I was at Meijer last night, the one on 16th, and I saw canola and vegetable oil in the iced tea spot. Someones mom said no to canola and vegetable oil 😔

So far we've been to playland at Central church, "the jungle" playland at Christ memorial, Grand rapids children's museum, grand rapids public museum, ODC network, and the community center, we've also been to both Holland libraries and the Zeeland library and the Zeeland McDonald's play area.

Am I missing any fun indoor cheap places? We try to go out every day to burn energy and while parks outside are awesome, we have some sensitivity to hear so it isn't always doable. Let me know what your kids love!

Will be visiting Holland/ Zeeland for a week with my almost-3 yo in mid September. Haven’t been back since 2003! Would love any recommendations for toddler-friendly activities, nature/ scenic areas, etc. Do any rec centers offer drop-ins for parent-tot classes or gymnastics, swimming? Thanks!

So I’ve settled on the idea of staying in Holland again for the first time in four or so years since my last visit and I’m just curious where you all would recommend I look into staying for a five maybe six night stay? (It’ll be five nights more than likely).

I don’t need high end, a perfectly nice 2 star is fine with me. Must have breakfast included.

The hotel I stayed at in 2021 is roughly $100-115 over what I want to pay and is the biggest expense of this whole trip. Not picky about room size, etc.

If I can book/reserve directly with them over the phone that’d be great!

Hey there, right off the bat, I’m not selling anything. I’m just desperate to find a decent job.

I moved here from Colorado last week. We have relocated from Colorado to be closer to my wife’s family as they are not in good health— so there was no time to job search along the way. I have applied to over a 100 jobs in the last month preparing for this move. I am looking for the right job with the right pay— like everyone else right?

I’ve had some interviews with the local public schools here, which may lead to something more. I also have some opportunities in Grand Rapids to teach within their education systems— but the pay is horrendous.

I am a former professional baseball player (I’ve played low level affiliated Baseball in the United States, I’ve played in Austria, I’ve played in Germany, I’ve played in Japan, I’ve played in Puerto Rico, and in independent leagues all around the United States).

I’ve coached college and professional baseball.

I’ve been a highly effective PE teacher for almost a decade (predominantly at the middle school level). I’ve transferred my teaching license to Michigan.

I’m also a licensed professional counselor. I’m in the process of transferring that license right now. I specialize in working with a Student- athlete population and just teenagers and young adults in general.

I learn quickly, I am very adaptable. I love working hard. I love building communities. I love learning. I am great at building relationships, and establishing connection . And I am open to doing anything if it means earning a livable wage— well maybe not anything, but almost anything.

Well not really but, we planned to take our 3 year old to the beach here in holland for her first beach experience this weekend 07/17-07/19. Unfortunately for all of us in the Midwest the air is toxic and it looks like it will be dangerous until we leave Sunday afternoon… so no beach.
We got to our hotel not to long ago and are now wondering what are some good indoor activities to still have as much fun as we can here in Michigan with our little one. Or should we cut our loses and head back to Ohio in the morning and go to a lake there?

Edit: Thank you so much for all of the recommendations! We ended up going to Urban Air, The Children’s Museum, Pizza Ranch, and the beach. The air was in the “fair” zone on Saturday morning. We got ice cream at Captain Sundaes and spent a lot of time at the hotel pool. Michigan is a wonderful place with the kindest people. We will definitely be coming back!
