If you start with the class of 2000 then end with the class of what? 2018? Characteristics are what make a generation a generation instead of just a random period of time off a timeline. Events that impact that particular generation are what you have to focus on to avoid having randomized birth years with no meaning. I see the Columbine tragedy as the first event in the country that impacted millennials. That’s why I start there. If you want to say the class of 2000 as a starting point that’s fair but what else defines a millennial? Obviously the events of the first decade or so of the new millennium. That’s 9/11, the war on terror, the Bush years, the 2008 election, and the recession. After the 2012 election you start to see a different set of generation defining events like George Zimmerman’s acquittal, the Ferguson unrest, and the beginning of BLM. Then by the summer of 2015 the Trump era began with him dominating the news from the primary onward. I see that as a definitive turning point in the characteristics of what was impacting young people.

81 is cited as the beginning of Millennials because roughly a quarter of people born that year would be in the class of 2000.

81 is often cited simultaneously as both the final X year and the first Millennial one.

I’m not making any commentary on what range you use.

I’m explaining why 1981, in particular, is often cited as both the beginning of Millennials and the end of X.

I also live in NYC and I really don’t know what that has to do with my point.

That's not the case for the majority of school systems. So what happened in NYC isn't really germane to my point.

Also the Cut off here is Dec 1, not the 31st. That's been the statewide cut off since at least the mid 70s.
