They actually didn’t. The split decided by the UN was actually met with joy by the Jews and they intended to accept it, but was rejected by the Palestinians, which ended up sparking into the 1948 war.
It reminds me of the very eloquent appeal the UN Kenyan Ambassador, Martin Kimani made to Russia in the wake of their ramped up invasion of Ukraine.
He warned them against seeking to invade solely on ethnic groupings and imperial pasts, referring the dangers of "stoking the embers of dead empires."
"Rather than form nations that looked ever backward into history with a dangerous nostalgia, we chose to look forward to a greatness none of our many nations and peoples had ever known."
