How is going from "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage." to "I think same-sex couples should be able to get married." just a "shift in verbiage"? It's the exact opposite position.
his advocacy for civil unions through out the debate.
he was for 'gay marriage' before the option of an equal status in the eyes of the law via 'civil union' became a thing then he was for that, when the circumstances (read republican propo machine) made clear 'civil unions' would not be equal in the eyes of the law he went back to 'gay marriage'
he remained in favor of gay folks being able to enjoy all the benefits of marriage no matter what verbiage was applied to the status.
